12-May:
Temple takes inaugural title
Tim Garner reports
Day two at the National Squash centre was nicely balanced after
the upsets of the previous day when the two number one seeds
were beaten in both Pools by the number two seeds.
John
Rooney started off Day two knowing that a single game would
put him into the Final and he convincingly beat Shaun Le Roux
in a match littered with errors , while Robbie Temple
booked his place in the Final with a strong performance against
Peter Billson. Billson started strongly but found the
pace of Temple’s play too much later on as as the higher ranked
player turned up the pressure.
Match three saw Adrian Grant and Jethro Binns
produce a five setter which Grant seemed to have trouble in
closing out, and indeed Binns had two match balls at 10-8 in the
fifth before Grant fought back under intense pressure to secure
second place and five all-important Elite Series points. In
Match four, Andy Whipp and Aqeel Rehman produced
the best match of the morning, with nothing in it as Whipp
managed to sneak a 3-1 win in a very high quality squash
contest.
In the final matches of the Pool stage, Le Roux produced
his best squash of the event in beating Binns in three
games, although Binns did look somewhat jaded after his earlier
efforts against Grant. The result left Le Roux to pick up 3 ES
Points and Binns just the 1. Billson rounded things off
beating Rehman 3-1 , with Rehman putting in a superb
effort from 8-5 down in the first game to come back to win
14-12. However that effort took its toll on the Austrian Number
one as Billson stepped up the pace to take the next three games
easily, and pick up 3 ES points.
The Final: John Rooney v Robbie Temple
The
battle of the number two seeds from each pool was always going
to be tight with both players in good form. Rooney raced to a
5-3 lead early on but Temple showed his love for the Glass Court
and took 6 points in a row and took the first game 11-8.
Temple raised his game in the second and Rooney had real trouble
with Temple’s accurate drops allowing him to close it out 11-6.
The third went the same way with Rooney working hard but Temple
was just too strong on the day as he went from a tight 7-6
scoreline to win the third 11-7 and take the BSPA Elite Series
Week 1 title .

Rooney & Temple set the pace on
Day One
Tim Garner
reports
The first Day of the BSPA Elite Series 2009 provided the
online audience with some high quality matches throughout
the day as the 8 players all played high intensity squash in
their pursuit of the Prize Money and Elite Series Ranking
Points.
Adrian Grant and Shawn Le Roux drew the short straw with the
early first match which Grant took 3-0 playing some
excellent squash considering the start time [8am]. Pete
Billson then gave the Top Seed in Pool B, Andy Whipp, a real
scare and had opportunities in the 4th before tiring in the
5th for a 3-2 win for Whipp.
Second seeds in each Pool, John Rooney and Robbie Temple both had impressive victories over Jethro Binns and Aqeel
Rehman respectively before the big matches of the day with
the Number one and two seeds facing each other in each Pool.
Adrian Grant v. John Rooney promised to be close as Rooney
had looked so good in his first match and Rooney started off
superbly and with a high energy game whereas Grant seemed a
little off the pace, perhaps the early start took its toll.
After taking the first game 11-4, Rooney pressed ahead and
race to a 8-4 lead with Grant looking visibly worried. A
tremendous fightback from Grant pulled the match back to 9-9
before Rooney sneaked the final two points for an 11-9 second
game.
The 3rd game had everything with Rooney serving at
10-9 for the match but Grant raising his level. Grant had
game balls himself before Rooney finally took the match with
a superb drop at 13-12 to win the match 3-0 and put himself
in the driving seat for final spot.
The following match proved to be truly competitive as both
players sensed a great chance to take up a berth against
Rooney and a potential winners cheque. Andy Whipp went 2-0
up in an opening two games strewn with errors. Robbie Temple
pulled it back to 2-2 with Whipp still making errors and
then in the fifth, more errors from Whipp’s racket proved
costly as Temple ran out 11-4 winner and potentially setting
up a battle between the number two seeds in tomorrow's final.
