Unbeaten Selby secures finals place
Le Roux and Hinds move
into contention
Already top of the rankings
going in to this 13th week, Daryl Selby guaranteed
himself a place in the end-of-season top-eight playoffs with
another series victory at Hallamshire, his fourth in four
outings.
Home favourite Nick Matthew
looked to be on course to upset Selby's unbeaten run after day
one, but the world number five stepped out on day two to protect
a slight tweak to his back.
This left the route to the
final open for Shaun Le Roux, who grabbed the opportunity
with a win over Matthew's replacement, Lewis Walters.
The last pool match was the ultimate 'dead rubber', with Le Roux
already in the final and Peter Billson confirmed in fourth place
in the group - although it still went the full five games, with
Le Roux notching up his third win.
The final against the in-form Selby would have been a tough task
even if Le Roux were fresh, but, starting just 90 minutes after
the previous match ended, it was a task too far as Selby wrapped
up his fourth title in just under half an hour.
Consolation for Le Roux in the eight points he collected though,
which move him into 14th place and in with a chance of making
the finals with just three events to come.
