Guyana
Girls
Taylor
Fernandes (under 13) –
Taylor pulled off a stunning upset at our national championships
when she came from 0-2 and match ball down to win her first
national title. She competed in the individual category last
year’s Jr. CASA and is looking forward to being one of the top
contenders this time around.
Larissa
Wiltshire (under 13) – Larissa has consistently been our top
performer in the under 13 category over the past year. She lost
a heart breaker in the final of the national championships, an
experience which should make her even stronger come July. She is
a great retriever and should be among the favorites for the
under 13 title.
Victoria
Arjoon (under 15) – Undefeated in the past three years of
Caribbean competition, Vicky’s flawless technique and powerful
shots have kept her in a league of her own during that period.
She has worked extremely hard on improving her mobility and is
looking forward to showcasing her new strengths as she goes for
her fourth consecutive individual title.
Mary
Fung-A-Fat (under 17) – Mary has been out of competition for
most of the past year due to exams. Her sharp mind and calm
personality have been the strengths that have helped her to two
Caribbean titles. She should be back in the swing of things bye
the time she gets to Cayman as she looks to take a third Jr.
CASA title.
Kayla
Jeffrey (under 19) – Kayla has probably been this girls
team’s most consistent performer over the past five years. She
always gives 110% and always comes through at crunch time when
her team needs it. She’s a strong all round player and has made
significant improvements in the mental aspect of her game over
the past year. She is looking forward to making her strongest
challenge yet for that illusive individual title.
Keisha
Jeffrey (under 19) – Keisha is the standout in this team of
exceptionally talented young ladies. She already has four
Caribbean titles to her name and is completely focused on
capturing number five this year. She is a complete player who
always finds a way to win the big matches. Keisha is looking
forward to leading this outstanding girls team to their fifth
consecutive team title.
Ashley
Khalil (under 19) – Ashley had an outstanding outing at
South American Games in Colombia earlier this year where she
teamed up with Nicolette Fenandes to win Bronze medals in the
Doubles and Team competitions. This experience along with her
unorthodox, but very effective style of play, will give her a
strong chance of winning her second Caribbean title.
Akeila
Wiltshire (under 15) – Akeila had a successful debut at Jr.
CASA 2009 where she placed third in the individual championships
and helped her team to the girls and overall team titles. She is
looking forward to stepping up into the under 15 category and
giving the older girls a run for their money.
Gabrielle
Fraser (under 15) – Gabby is a very strong retriever who
never gives up. She had her first taste of Caribbean competition
last year where she won the plate title in the under 13
division. She is looking forward to her second outing at this
level.
Ashley
deGroot (under 17) – Ashley is a crafty player with a deadly
drop shot. Her best result was runner-up in the under 15
category two years ago in Bermuda. She is once again hoping to
be among the top finishers this time around.
Boys
Patrick
Fraser (under 13) – Patrick comes from a very successful
squash family, his aunts have represented Guyana at both junior
and senior level and his uncle Luke is a two time Caribbean and
Southern Caribbean champion. He is very enthusiastic and has
been looking forward to this opportunity for a long long time.
Look out Caribbean here comes Patrick.
Ben
Mekdeci (under 13) – Ben or uncle Ben as he should be called
is the baby of the team, but don’t let that fool you, when he
steps on court its time for “BIG MAN” squash. He is our reigning
national under 13 champion and was adjudged the most outstanding
player of our national championships. He is looking forward to
his first junior CASA experience.
Nyron
Joseph (under 15) – Finally, Nyron has moved up in age
category after competing for the past four junior CASA
tournaments as an under 13. He had his best result when he
placed third in last year’s tournament, but will have to work
very hard if he hopes to come close to bettering that
performance in this category which is overflowing with amazing
talent.
Jean-Claude
Jeffrey (under 15) – Jean-Claude placed third in this
category last year, before going on to have a stellar year
competing on Canadian junior circuit. He now has the experience
to match his good all round game and should be among the top
contenders in this category. He will be a key player in this
boys team’s hopes of winning their third consecutive team title.
Jason-Ray
Khalil (under 17) – A fantastic athletic talent, Jason was
our runner-up national junior sportsman of 2009, when he also
excelled at badminton, basketball and track. He has always had a
reputation as a shot maker but has found a new maturity in his
game, which when matched with his relentless retrieving, will
make him one of the surprise packages at this tournament.
Deje
Dias (under 19) – Once again Deje enhanced his reputation of
being Mr. dependable last year in Barbados, when he pulled of a
number of key victories which helped Guyana win an amazing 14th
Caribbean boys team title. He has earned the respect of his
teammates time and time again and is looking forward to doing
his best to help his country live up to the high standards they
have set over the past few years.
Alexander
Arjoon (under 19) – The most accomplished player on this
boys team, Alex is a two time former individual champion. He
rebounded quite admirably from a disappointing individual
championship last year, to play a key role in Guyana’s boys team
victory. We are looking forward to seeing Alex at his
exceptional best as he hunts a third Caribbean title in Cayman.
Steven
Xavier (under 17) – Steven made his debut for Guyana last
year in Barbados and has steadily improved since then. He is
undoubtedly the fittest player on this team and has worked
extremely hard on his racquet skills. He is hoping to pull a few
surprises this time around.
Jason
van Dijk (under 19) – A relative newcomer to squash, Jason
has an unbridled enthusiasm for the game and can be seen roaming
the courts late into the nights. This will be his first tour and
he is looking forward to his first taste of international
competition.
Carl Ince (Coach) –
Carl’s unflinching dedication to Guyana’s squash was once again
rewarded last year when his charges created history by becoming
the first team to win all three team titles in two consecutive
years. He is looking forward to the new challenges presented by
the inclusion of four debutants on this year’s team, but if
history is any indication he is sure to overcome those
challenges with flying colours.
