Duncalf survives as Chinappa surprises again
and Annie raises home hopes

Despite dropping the first game, eight-time defending champion Nicol David extended her unbeaten run in Hong Kong to 42 matches as she beat France’s Camille Serme in a repeat of last year’s final.

Her next opponent will be fifth-seeded Englishwoman Jenny Duncalf who survived the longest match of the day to hold off Nicolette Fernandes. After sharing the first four games the Guyanese led 8-7 in the decider when Duncalf was penalised a conduct stroke for leaving the court (to be ill, as it happened, before changing her racket). Duncalf took the next four points to take the match, despite some desperate dives by her opponent on the final rally.

Alison Waters ended the run of Welsh qualifier Tesni Evans with a comfortable straight-games win, and she now faces another ‘giant-killer’ in Joshana Chinappa, the only unseeded player to make the last eight, after the Indian beat Line Hansen in four games to record a second successive upset and a second successive quarter-final berth.

An Egyptian semi-finalist is guaranteed following Onmeya Abdel Kawy’s upset straight-games win over Irish eighth seed Madeline Perry and third seed Raneem El Weleily’s win against compatriot Nour El Tayeb, a clash of former world junior champions.

Hong Kong’s Annie Au delighted the fervent home crowd with an emphatic win against qualifier Emma Beddoes, winning nine points in a row from 2-6 down in the third to dash hopes of an English comeback. “Just too good, and on that form she’ll trouble anyone,” said Beddoes.

Annie will face another English opponent after second seed Laura Massaro recovered from an early deficit to beat Australia’s Rachael Grinham in straight games.

Top eight through to men’s quarters

The men’s quarter-finals will feature the top eight seeds, half of whom are Egyptian.

Defending champion Ramy Ashour wasted no time in despatching English qualifier Adrian Waller, and his next opponent, Spain’s Borja Golan, was equally efficient in beating Chris Simpson in three games.

English success came as James Willstrop won three close games against Germany’s Simon Rosner, and the 2011 champion now faces Mohamed Elshorbagy in a repeat of their world quarter-final in Manchester after Mohamed beat his younger brother Marwan in four games.

World Champion Nick Matthew fought back from a game down to beat speedy Indian Saurav Ghosal, and he’ll meet five-time Hong Kong champion Amr Shabana who will be glad to see the back of court 9 where he beat young Swiss Nicolas Mueller in four games.

Second seed Gregory Gaultier looked in impressive form as he despatched young Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad, but he’ll find another one standing in his way tomorrow after Tarek Momen came though a fast and furious four-game encounter with Olli Tuominen 16-14 in the fourth.

Quarter-finals start at 14.00, all on the showcourt at Hong Kong Squash Centre, with the winners booking themselves semi-final places on the all-glass court at the Cultural Centre.
