Mon 2nd Dec, Day TWO:
French and Egyptian hat-tricks
in Qualifying Finals
The
second day’s play of the final PSA/WSA World Series event of the
year at Hong Kong Squash Centre saw sixteen players win through
to the main draws with notable hat-tricks in both the men’s and
women’s matches.
French trio Mathieu Castagnet, Grégoire Marche and Lucas
Serme all came through with Serme producing a second
successive upset as he beat Pakistan’s Nasir Iqbal in straight
games to reach his first World Series main draw. Amazingly the
Frenchmen were drawn out of the hat one after the other, pitting
them against Amr Shabana, Nicolas Mueller and and Saurav Ghosal
respectively.
Malaysia’s
Nafiizwan Adnan also upset the seedings with a 3-2 win
over New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson to earn a match with world
number one and defending champion Ramy Ashour.
Home favourite Max Lee gave the HK fans a scare as he let
a two-game lead slip against Shaun Le Roux before delightedly
taking the decider to set up a meeting with Tarek Momen,, while
Lee's namesake Joe was joined by fellow Englishman
Adrian Waller in the winners' list.
On the women’s side it was a
trio of young Egyptians who stole the show - Yathreb Adel was
seeded to win, but Mariam Metwally and Salma Hany Ibrahim
convincingly beat second and fourth qualifying seeds Latasha
Khan and Delia Arnold to boost the Egyptian numbers in the main
draw.
The
Egyptian trio avoided meeting the top seeds too. Canada’s Sam
Cornett, who beat Melody Francis in a five-setter, was
pulled out of the hat to play eight-time defending champion
Nicol David while it was France’s Coline Aumard who drew
second seeded Englishwoman Laura Massaro after beating Olivia
Blatchford in straight games.
There was no joy for the local duo of Tong Tsz Wing and Ho Ka
Po, beaten by Emma Beddoes and Tesni Evans, but
there was delight for Japan’s Misaki Kobayashi who beat
Deon Saffery to qualify for a first World Series main draw after
several narrow misses.
