Quarter-Finals - Annie stuns second seed
as Ramy retires again ...
We
were
down to one court today at Hong Kong Squash Centre for the
quarter-finals of the final World Series events of the year.
And what a start it was for the packed crowd as home favourite
Annie Au sensationally beat world number two Laura
Massaro to reach the semi-finals for the second time in four
years.
Raneem El Welily will be waiting for her there after she
won the all-Egyptian match with Omneya Abdel Kawy in straight
games.
The
first men's match was an absolute classic, as James Willstrop
fought back from two games down to beat Mohamed Elshorgaby 20-18
in the fifth 0 the last game alone lasted 39 minutes ! There
were spills, thrills, disputes, decisions and drama galore in
those final stages - Willstrop had eight match balls and
received 'no let' decisions on several iof them before winning
the match on a strike! read the reports
and quotes on the blog for full details.
The
next match was the polar opposite, as top seed Ramy Ashour,
leading 1-0 and 6-2 against Borja Golan, took an injury
timeout but his troublesome hamstring clearly wasn't right on
his return. He managed to win the second, but couldn't compete
in the third and fourth, and an extremely sad Egyptian was
forced to retire at 0-7 in the fourth.
The
women's semi-final lineup was completed as Alison Waters
came from a game down to beat surprise package Joshana Chinappa
in four, and top seed Nicol David continued her
eight-year run of Hong Kong wins with a comprehensive
straight-game win over Jenny Duncalf.
Second seed Gregory Gaultier booked his place in the semis - and
most probably earned the necessary points to make him world #1
come January - with a tough five-setter against Tarek Momen. The
first four games could have gone either way, but the Frenchman
was in control of the decider.
The final place in the semis was claimed by England's Nick
Matthew who recovered from a game down to beat five-time HK
champion Amr Shabana in four tough games that took just over an
hour.
