Marwan deposes Simpson as
Coppinger keeps the shocks coming ...
The
second day of main draw action started with the defeat of
defending champion Chris Simpson, but in contrast to
yesterday that was a result predicted by the seedings.
Third seed Marwan Elshorbagy, one of three Egyptians in
action tonight, held game balls in the first only to see Simpson
snatch the lead, but responded strongly in the next three games
to reach the quarters.
The
upsets returned in the second match as South African qualifier
Steve Coppinger added to the seeds' casualty list as he
overcame second seed Omar Mosaad in five games.
Coppinger edged the first two games, but it looked as though
Mosaad had weathered the storm and found his range as he
levelled. But Coppinger dominated the decider to register one oh
his best ever wins.
Tarek
Momen made it two Egyptians through to the quarter-finals as
he beat St George's own wildcard entry Joe Lee in four games.
Momen was on top for the first two games but Joe fought back
well to sneak the third, but Momen quickly established a winning
lead in the fourth.
James Willstrop completed round one with a tough
three-game win over qualifier Nicolas Mueller. The Swiss had his
chances in all three games, but Willstrop had the edge at the
end of all of them as he advanced to the quarter-finals.
So, the last eight features two qualifiers, one non-seed and
just two Egyptians - who play each other next.
