Semi-Finals:

Cayman march into final, Guyana deny T&T

With the U13s starting proceedings today, first on court was a repeat of the individual semi-final which saw OECS's Jason Doyle take out top seed Iain McCallum. Iain got his revenge, in straight games too, but boy he had to work hard for it, taking the first two games 18/16 and 12/10 before taking the third in a relatively comfortable 11/7.

Another 3/0 followed, another tough one too as Alex Fraser held off a spirited challenge from Stefan Joseph, winning 12/10, 11/8 and easing through 11/3.

That left it to individual champion Cameron Stafford to clinch the victory, and he duly did, despatching Jules Snagg 11/6, 11/9, 11/5 at which point OECS called it a day and conceded the dead rubbers, leaving Cayman to contemplate the possibility of their first ever team triumph tomorrow.

The other semi was a real thriller. Defending champion Guyana went two up courtesy of Patrick Fraser and Deja Dias, but Kale Wilson pulled one back leaving the scene set for the Patrick brothers to depose the Guyanese.

Little Nku was first on, in a repeat of his individual final against Jean-Claude Jeffrey, and again it was a nail-biter. Jean-Claude edged it again, 12/10, 11/9, 15/13, saving several game balls in the third, to the delight of the Guyanese side of the packed crowd, prompting cousin Kayla to refrain "he's done it again, he's done it again ..."

That wasn't the end of it though. On went Mandela, against Jason Ray Khalil - brother of individual champ Ashley, just to keep the family connections going - and they fought out the toughest, noisiest dead rubber in history. Mandela had a couple of match balls in the fourth, but Jason-Ray hung in, taking the fifth 11/9 to make it 4-1.

Guyana girls cruise, Jamaicans jump for joy ...

It would have been a major surprise if T&T had seriously troubled the mighty Guyanese Girls, the defending champions who between them boast a daunting amount of individual podium finishes.

In the event they couldn't as Guyana swept them aside 5-0, dropping just two games, to reach another final, their fifth (maybe 6th, to be confirmed) in a row.

If Guyana are no strangers to the final, Jamaica haven't been there for a while, finishing fourth and third in the last two years, while Bermuda were the higher seeds and finalists two years ago.

The Jamaican caused was helped when Madeleine Rose had to pull out injured, although she would have faced the individual champion Alyssa Mullings, so Bermuda would probably have taken the lead anyway.

Rachael Barnes
levelled matters with a tight four-game win over Lauren Mahfood before Brooke Burrows restored Jamaica's advantage with a similar win over Kelly Barnes.

The stage seemed set for a decider when Emma Keane established a two-game lead over Mary Mahfood, and looked in good form doing so. Mary wouldn't lie down though, battled her way back into the match and took the next three games to put Jamaica into the final.

Pool Matches final round

After two matches each yesterday, this morning saw the final round of pool play, to determine the semi-finalists, who will go head to head this afternoon.
Guyana girls close it out,
Jamaica and Bermuda win through

Three out of three always looked the likely outcome for the Guyanese girls, and they duly wrapped up Pool A with a 5-0 win over the Bahamas to become the first team to reach the semi-finals. They'll be joined in the semis by Bermuda, who ended hosts Cayman's hopes with a 4-1 win.

T&T also made sure of a semi-final place with a whitewash of the OECS, while Jamaica beat Barbados in a similar scoreline to take them to the top of Pool B.

T&T edge out Jamaica,
Cayman clean sweep

OECS made quick work out of Barbados to seal their semi-final spot in Pool B, but Jamaica had an outside chance of going through if they could upset unbeaten T&T.

They had a real go at it too, falling just short as T&T's Chad Salandy won the U13 match 13/11 in the fifth, then Chase McQuan won 11/9 in the fifth to take the second U19 game just as Jamaica thought they were in with a shout. Kale Wilson wrapped it up for T&T, Julian Morrison pulled one back for Jamaica and to rub salt into the wound Mandela Patrick came from 2/1 down to make it a hat-trick of 3-2 wins for T&T.

In Pool A defending champions Guyana eased past Bahamas to finish on two wins, and finish second behind Cayman who made it three out of three against Bermuda.

Tue 13th, Day Three, Teams Day One

After all the excitement of three days of individual competition, we move on to the team tournament.

Each country fields a Boys and a Girls team, each comprising two U19s and one each of U17, U15 and U13. They're split into two pools, and after three pool matches the top two in each pool move into the semi-finals, the bottom two into the 5/8 semis.

ALERT:
Team T&T were spotted practicing their Mexican Wave "ready for the final" earlier today.

And no, this isn't their wave, it's something else noisy ...

You have been warned ...

Jamaica girls overtake T&T

Match of the day so far is the Jamaican Girls' 3-2 win over T&T.

It went down to the wire at two all, with Jessica Scott keeping T&T in the hunt with a 3-2 win over Brooke Burrows, but it was a repeat of the individual final for the decider, where Alyssa Mullings again delivered, beating Faith Gillezeau in straight games to put them in pole position in Pool B (the winners get to avoid Guyana, who hold both boys and girls titles, in the semis, so that's no bad thing).

Guyana edge past Bermuda

The third round of matches saw another thriller, this time in the Boys' event. Defending champions Guyana were taken to a decider after Micah Richards and Noah Browne took two ties for Bermuda, Deje Dias and Jean-Claude Jeffrey replied for Guyana, leaving it once again down to the Under 13s.

Guyana's Patrick Fraser always held the upper hand against a gallant Dylan Pratt, but that didn't stop every rally being greeted with whoops and hollers from the massed crowd - and it wasn't just Guyana and Bermuda, the match drew inquisitive spectators from all around the club.

After he'd sealed the match for his team and been kissed and hugged by all the girls (and some boys)in the vicinity and Kayla Jeffrey declared him to be her hero (now you know what to do guys, win the decider for your team) Patrick immediately sat down and tucked into his tea ... "it's AMERICAN Chicken" he explained ... answers on a postcard ...

OECS deny Jamaica

The last match to finish was another thriller, as OECS and Jamaica looked to book themselves a semi-final spot.

Ashante Smith put Jamaica ahead with a 3-2 win, Stefan Joseph levelled, Jules Snagg put OECS ahead, and Julian Morrison set up the decider.

It was a noisy affair, with the OECS team outnumbered by the Jamaican masses, who were making all the noise, and a lot of it at that, including some innovative chants as well as the usual banshee stuff.

OECS's Jason Doyle took the lead, Cameron Anderson levelled, although to be fair he did get a good number of slightly fortuitous winners in that second game. Jason regained the lead, but when Cameron led 6-3 in the fourth a nerve-wracking fifth looked on the cards.

It wasn't to be, as Jason played good, steady squash to overhaul his opponent and give OECS the win.

Pool B is still open, but you have to expect OECS to beat Barbados tomorrow, which means Jamaica will have to beat T&T - who won twice today - and rely on countback (no, I have no idea what the rules are for that!).
