When James became World Number
1
World Masters Delhi 2011
Much
though I believe that my involvement with many players has
helped my perspective, recalling the matches which gave me most
pleasure inevitably brought to mind the match which brought
about James's World no1 ranking.
Beating Gregory Gaultier, lifelong opponent meant the task was
difficult enough, but when James lost a 57 minute first game
21-19, the prospects seemed less than favourable.
However when I went to him at the end of the game, his head was
up, his eyes were clear and I sensed that all would be well. He
won the tough second, the third more easily and at 6-1 in the
fourth Gregory retired injured.
So the ambition of all those
who believe they can make it to the top was fulfilled.
One
thing made it even more special: as a young boy, having won a
British Junior Open title, at a celebration at Pontefract Squash
Club, James thanked all those who had supported him, wisely
saying that such experiences are always better for being shared.
In Delhi happily,
Vanessa ,
David ,
Mick ** and myself were all there and I am sure that added much
to the achievement and occasion for James. |
