Sherbini takes out top seed as defending
champions reach the finals ...
Semi-finals
day started with a hugely impressive performance from Nour El
Sherbini, who followed up yesterday's 3-0 win over Nicol David
with a straight-games dismissal of top seed and world #1 Laura
Massaro.
The young Egyptian pulled clear at the end of two close opening
games, then recovered from a 2-7 deficit in the third to take
the match on her second match ball, reaching her second
consecutive World Series final.
“Because
I was struggling with my breathing - I have flu - I was going
for every shot and thankfully they were going in," said
Sherbini. "Normally when I play Laura it is a tough five-game
match so to win 3-0 is an achievement that I’m definitely proud
of."
Defending champion Raneem
El Welily made sure that there would be an Egyptian champion
again this year as she beat Camille Serme in three close games
to set up a meeting with Sherbini.
In
the men's semifinals top seeds Mohamed Elshorbagy
and Nick Matthew went through to the final,
world #1 Elshorbagy in straight games against Miguel Rodriguez
while defending champion Matthew won in four games against Omar
Mosaad.
"I lost to Omar in US Open and that was the
first time he beat me and it was a little bit on my mind today,"
said Matthew. "But I’m a different player than I was before
Christmas so I wanted to carry on making that statement and
prove it."
