TODAY :  Daily reports from Fram in Chicago

24-Feb, Day TWO:
Coll takes out top seed in
Chicago Qualifying upset ...

It was the second day of play at the University Club of Chicago, with 16 places in the main draws decided - 8 men's and 8 women's matches, a couple of upsets, some very long men's matches and a very late finish ...

The men’s matches started with a five-setter that set the scene for a series of long and close matches - none of them finished in straight games - and while just five of the players seeded to reach the main draw made it through, two of those fell in the first round and it was the last match of the day that produced the biggest upset.

Germany’s Raphael Kandra beat Olli Pett 14-12 in the fifth in that 68-minute opener, while Adrian Waller took 3 minutes longer to recover from 2-1 down against fellow Englishman Declan James.

The third match was an all-Scottish affair with Alan Clyne coming from a game down to beat Greg Lobban in 77 minutes.

Another five-setter followed with Mexican Cesar Salazar outlasting LJ Anjema in 66 minutes, followed by an all-Hong Kong match which saw Leo Au come from 2-1 down to beat Tsz Fung Yip in 78 minutes, the longest match of the day.

World Junior Champion Diego Elias came from a game down to beat Joe Lee in four - 66 minutes - Omar Abdel Meguid also took four games to get past Campbell Grayson in just under an hour, and the final main draw place was taken by Paul Coll as he beat top seed Zahed Mohamed in four games and 64 minutes.

Hania joins seven seeds in women's main draw ...

By contrast none of the women’s matches went to five and only two came close to the hour mark as seven of the top seeds made it through.

The upset came as 15-year-old Egyptian Hania El Hammamy came from a game down to beat Milou van der Heijden, setting up a main draw meeting with Camille Serme.
