Quarter-Finals:
Revenge for Rodriguez as
Sherbini downs David ...
We're
down to the last eight in the latest World Series draws in
Chicago, with 15 of the top 16 seeds still in contention at the
start of play.
In the afternoon session both top seeds won through to the
semis, Laura Massaro beating Omneya Abdel Kawy in
straight games and Mohamed Elshorbagy getting the better
of Simon Rosner in four.
Massaro
will meet Nour El Sherbini after the fifth seeded
Egyptian beat world champion Nicol David in three close
games, while Elshorbagy will face fourth seed Miguel
Rodriguez after the Colombian downed the World #1s brother
Marwan in straight games - gaining quick revenge for the defeat
he suffered last week at home.
"It was very hard for me to lose against Marwan in Columbia,"
said Rodrizuez. "Everybody was rooting for me and I didn’t
expect it, and here we are playing each other again. It’s nice
to reach my first semi of the season, I’m fresh, and I’m going
to give it a big push to finish the season very strongly…"
The evening session opened with a hard fought win for
France's Camille Serme, twice coming from a game behind
to end the run of U.S. #1 Amanda Sobhy 11-9 in the fifth. Serme
knew she'd face an Egyptian in the semis, ant it will be
Raneem El Welily after the defending champion beat
compatriot Nouran Gohar in straight games.
I knew it
was going to be a big battle as last time we played, it went to
11/9 in the 5th," said Serme. "In these kind of matches, you are
just relieved to get through."
Nick Matthew kept his hopes of retaining the men's
title alive as he beat Tarek Momen in straight games and he'll
meet another Egyptian in Omar Mosaad, who got
past Mathieu Castagnen in four close games.
