Sun 28-Feb, Day SIX, Round Two (bottom):
Defending Champion Matthew survives thriller as Egyptians
claim half the quarterfinal places
The
quarter-finals were settled today with eight more second
round matches.
In the top half of the draw seven to the seeded
players won through, Marwan Elshorbagy creating the upset.
There were no upsets today, but a couple of narrow escapes
...
The day started with Tarek Momen coming from a
game down to beat Diego Elias, the only qualifer to make round
two, while defending champion Nick Matthew came from two
games down before saving three match balls in the fifth to deny
Borja Golan in a 109-minute thriller.
"I feel a bit like I’ve won the tournament right now, it's mad that that was only a second round match," said Matthew.
"Borja deserved to win today, but I guess my experience and my
fighting spirit took me through."

Mathieu
Castagnet looked to be cruising to victory against
Darly Selby, but the Englishman mounted a spirited comeback
which Castagnet halted at the end of the fourth by
diving and retrieving in a manner Daryl could only bow
to.
Omar Mosaad made it four
Egyptians in the men's last eight - one in each quarter-final -
as he recovered from losing a close first game to beat Saurav
Ghosal.
In the women's draw there were comfortable wins for US hope
Amanda Sobhy, France's Camille Serme and Nouran Gohar
from Egypt, only Annie Au managing to force a match
over the 30m mark, as defending champion Raneem El Welily
went through in four games.
The women's quarter-finals
will also feature four Egyptians, with a semi-finalist
guaranteed with Welily and Gohar set to meet.
