Andrew McDougall wins world championship team trials
MONTREAL
– Andrew McDougall of Calgary won his four matches this
week to place first at tightly contested Canadian team world
squash championship trials which were held here this week.
Three of the eight matches at the trials went the five-game
limit and two more went to four.
Dane Sharp of Ajax, Ontario, was the heartbreak kid of the
tournament losing two matches in five games.
Both McDougall and second place finisher Andrew Schnell
of Calgary join Shahier Razik of Toronto and Shawn
DeLierre of Brossard, Quebec, on the Canadian squad for the
world team squash championships set for August 21-27 in
Paderborn, Germany.
Razik and DeLierre had already clinched berths on the team
because of their world rankings. Razik is currently ranked 31st
and DeLierre 58th.
This week, five players were battling for the two spots.
McDougall defeated Nick Sachvie of St. Catharines,
Ontario, 11-6, 11-7, 11-4, Sharp 11-9, 11-6, 4-11, 9-11, 11-8
and Schnell 9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8.
Schnell’s two victories were over Sharp 11-13, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7,
11-9 and David Phillips of Pointe-Claire, Quebec, 8-11,
9-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.
Sharpe was named the team alternate.
