Samantha succeeds at the LAAC

Well it wasn't quite the marathon of yesterday, but it was another intense battle between two determined women, and once again it was the Mexican who came out on top.

Samantha Teran will rarely change her game plan - drive it low and hard, run after everything - and few can beat her at it. Although Louise Crome tried to mix it up where she could, the heat and the unrelenting pressure from her opponent made it difficult to do that for any length of time, so she found herself embroiled in so many of those gruelling rallies that Samantha thrives on.

Samantha started quickly, forcing the pace as ever, and went 8/1 up relatively quickly, but not easily. Seventeen hand-outs came and went before Louise broke the deadlock, but it was too late and on her twelfth game ball the top seed took the lead.

A quick 4/0 lead was enough to see her home in the second, and the same was true for Louise in the third as she reduced the deficit.

Once again in the fourth Samantha took the early advantage, not quickly this time though, she got the better of several brutal hard driving rallies. 5/0 always looked like a winning lead though, and she kept up the pace and the momentum, this time needing only two chances to finish it off and claim her 11th career title, her fourth of the year.

"Louise is difficult to play, she has very good technique and hits the ball hard so I had to really work to win. I think I played better than I did yesterday, I had to think more, otherwise it would have been even longer.

"It took a long time to win the first, but even with so many handouts I didn't let it get to me - she was winning the points, I wasn't losing them, so there wasn't the pressure you can sometimes feel at times like that.

"She played very well at the end of the second, I was happy to win that one, but in the third I made some mistakes at the start which cost me that game.

"This is my favourite event - Bob is great, we keep in touch all year, it's not too far from home and there's lots of Mexicans here to support me, we even went out for some Mexican food last night!"

"I knew that Samantha would be driving the ball hard and low, that's her game.

"So I changed my game plan for today and I was trying to slow it down and control it, but it's so hot on there and it was hard not to get drawn into her game.

"All credit to her, she played really well, she basically did to me what I did to Aisling yesterday.

"It's been a really great week, good experience for me and I've really enjoyed it, thanks to Bob and the club.

"Next week it's Mexico with a similar draw to here, so I hope I'll do at least as well there ..."

Bob moves on

After the final LAAC Squash Pro Bob Hanscom made a surprise announcement that after 15 years at the helm, "Mister Southern California Squash" would be retiring from the post.

He'll still be around for a month's notice, "and I'm sure you'll see me around the courts after that," he announced.

He's been a great influence and will be a great loss, so 1) we'll have a feature on his career in the next few days, and 2) if anyone has any wishes to pass on, or memories to share, please send them to us at bob@squashsite.co.uk for inclusion.
