Seeds safely through

It will be the top eight seeds who contest the quarter-finals of the second EBG Los Angeles Open after the first round on the eighth floor of the LAAC.

Samantha Teran had too much for Tara Mullins although the Canadian made the top-seeded Mexican work hard to maintain control on the warm, bouncy courts before subsiding in the third.

Teran will meet Donna Urquhart, who took advantage of an error-prone start from qualifier Stephanie Edmison, and the in-form Australian never looked like letting her opponent back in.

Third seeded Manuela Manetta had a nightmare start against an opponent who, like herself, is a fast mover and full of running. But from 0/7 in the first the Italian steadied and ran out a straight-games winner.

The all-English clash between long-time friends and Pennsylvania training partners Suzie Pierrepont and Tina Rix went according to seedings, and Suzie will be relieved that tomorrow she has use of all three of the rackets the pair are sharing this week.

In what tournament director Bob Hanscom billed as a "Mutt & Jeff" match ("little 'n large" in Anglo), Alana Miller kept 15-year-old Nour El Tayeb subdued for three games, but the never-say-die Egyptian ran her heart out as always, took the second and continues to show what a force she will soon be.

Miller meets third seed Louise Crome in the quarters after the Kiwi also beat an Egyptian opponent. Eman El Amir couldn't stop hitting the tin at the start, and although she improved, playing well enough to lead 6/3 in the third, it was Crome got the better of a close finish.

The final two matches saw Latasha Khan, seeded two, and Aisling Blake east to straight-game wins.

Tonight sees a wine-tasting evening on the third floor of the LAAC and as long as today's victors follow the time-honoured tradition of not swallowing we have every right to expect some fine matches tomorrow ...

Player on Player

issue #2

“I’m glad to get that first one out of the way. She seemed a bit nervous at the start and hit a few tins, so maybe it wasn’t her best day. It’s so hot on there though – I guess I should be used to it, coming from Brisbane, but even so …

“I’ve been playing a few tournaments recently and I’m playing quite well, hopefully I’ll do that tomorrow. It’s been a couple of years since I played Samantha so I’m looking forward to seeing how that goes …”

“It’s very hard to finish the ball off on there and she likes to run so that made it a hard game. We’ve played each other so many times, whenever we’re in a tournament together we always seem to playing, but thankfully I usually win!

“After this event I’m looking forward to the Mexican Open at home. There’s a team running the event but my job was to try and get the sponsors, so I got Harrow involved and the Sport Institute who are supporting it 50/50.”

“These courts make it hard work – I had a hit last night but it’s hard to get comfortable on them, it’s difficult to find your length.

"First matches on new courts are never easy though, so I’m glad that one’s over.

“It’s so hard to play someone when you know each other’s games so well – Tina and I have been playing each other since we were ten and we’re together at Philadelphia.

"The difference is that I train more than her – she’s concentrating on coaching and playing a few tournaments whereas my main focus is on playing with some coaching as well.”

“I was a bit flat mentally at the start and she caught me a bit by surprise.

"She’s a good player and she picks up so much, you can’t expect anything easy, but I managed to pick my game up and come through.

“I’m happy to be through my first match and hopefully I’ll be ready from the start tomorrow …”

“She made a few errors at the start, but then we started having some tough rallies. I knew that if I kept it in play long enough, especially straight, that she was likely to come up with an error.

“It takes a while to get used to the court, the bounce if high and you sometimes find the ball skipping towards you.

“We both got a bit uptight in the third with a few calls, and she got a few strokes which disrupted me a little - I’m not normally that vocal on court!”

“That was a good opener. I wanted to get stuck into a few tough rallies and play my way into the tournament, so it was good workout for me.

"She hits a decent ball and doesn’t give you any out and out freebies, but I got a few opportunities by putting her into the backhand corner.

“This is probably my last tournament using standard scoring. I’m sitting on the fence about it, it’s a big change …”

“She’s a real fighter, especially in the second game when hit some great shots from tough positions. I felt out of balance when she was being aggressive, especially from the back of the court, I realised I needed to be patient and faster to react to her shots.

“I’m feeling pretty good at the moment, I’ve had a few weeks training and I’m just going into a few tournaments, here and in Malaysia.

“I can’t wait for when we go to Pro Scoring, it will be much more intense for a shorter period of time …”

“I was making too many errors, and when I put it loose she has such a reach she was able to put the ball away.

“Next time …”
