Victorian Open upgraded for 2014
on 80th anniversary
Squash
& Racquetball Victoria, the peak body for squash and racquetball in
Victoria, is excited to announce that the Victorian Open Squash
Championship will be raised to a Challenger 15/Tour 15 event
on the PSA/WSA circuits for 2014.
To be held from July 9th to 13th at the Melbourne Sports &
Aquatic Centre and now in its 80th year, the Victorian Open past
winners have included such greats as Geoff Hunt, Heather McKay,
Sarah Fitz-Gerald and David Palmer.
Geoff Hunt, who has returned to Australia after a number of years
coaching in Qatar, will be a special guest for the finals.
Grown extensively over the last five years, the event now boasts a
field of quality competitors both from Australia and overseas. This
year’s event will play host to players from over 14 countries
including Hong Kong, Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, France, USA and
Pakistan.
“This
is one of the strongest fields we have seen in recent years and we
will not only have Australia’s Number 2 ranked player (and former
World Number 1) Rachel Grinham competing but the four female members
of Australia’s Commonwealth Games Team,” explains Fiona Young,
Executive Director at Squash & Racquetball Victoria.
“In the Men’s event, world number 25 and Hong Kong’s top player,
Max Lee is making his first appearance at the Open and with
Malaysia’s Nafiizwan Adnan the number 2 seed, compatriot Leo Au at 3
and kiwi Martin Knight fresh from a big win in New Zealand at 4, it
will make for some great competition.
"We are hoping local gun, Rex Hedrick who is seeded 5th can get up
and make an impact in the final rounds.”
The
Victorian Open will provide Victorians with the chance to see some
of the world’s best players in action for free, and once again
Squash & Racquetball Vic will webcast the semi-finals and finals
live across the internet from 4:45pm on Sat 12 July and 4:00pm Sun
13 July in partnership with My Sport Live.
“We are really happy to be able to broadcast our event live for
the fifth year in a row. To showcase squash to the general community
is important for the continued growth and development of our sport.
"Last year the event was seen in more than 38 countries around the
globe and we hope to extend on that number this year,” added
Young."The
Victorian Open in Melbourne is a very exciting destination on the
World Squash Tour and we are pleased to have it back. This year's
VIC Open is even bigger, better and stronger than ever before.
"With a total prize fund of 30k, the use of the glass court at MSAC,
live streaming of the semi finals and finals and world ranked
players from around the world, the Victorian Open is certainly the
biggest event on the Australian Squash calendar.
"The 2014 event will also celebrate the prestigious and historic
competition's 80 years in existence. This year's event promises to
be yet another spectacle of Squash. I wish everyone the best of luck
for the week."
