Victorian Open 2010
02-04 Jul, Melbourne, $6k+$4k
05-Jul, Finals:
Alexander & Camilleri Vic spoils
Andrew Dent reports

Queensland pair Zac Alexander and Lisa Camilleri claimed the spoils at the Victorian Open squash tournament in Melbourne but both were made to work hard for their victories in Sunday’s men’s and women’s finals.

Top seeded Alexander came back from losing the first game to second ranked Matthew Karwalski, winning 6-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 to take out his first Victorian Open men’s crown, while Camilleri won her third women’s crown with an 11-8, 11-9, 12-10 triumph over Victoria’s Amelia Pittock.

It was Alexander’s second win on the 2010 Australian Squash Tour in just his second tournament but he was pushed all the way by Karwalski.

The New South Welshman attacked from the start and surprised a sluggish Alexander, before the top seed recovered and slowly began to take control, taking advantage of some Karwalski errors to get vital breaks in the each of the three remaining games.

The 21-year-old Alexander, who took out the season-opening Top End Open in Darwin, has now beaten Karwalski in all five clashes on the PSA tour.

Alexander will now take a week off before playing in the NSW Classic in Sydney ahead of trying to qualify for the Australian Open, which begins in Canberra on August 10.

Earlier the 27-year-old Camilleri made it four tournament wins in a row with her win over 2005 champion Pittock.

Camilleri and Pittock are the same age and grew up playing juniors together.

“We know each other’s games really well and know each other’s strengths and weaknesses,” Camilleri said.

“It was a tough tournament for me because we had to play the semi-finals and final on the same day, which is a bit unusual.
“And I was really pushed in the semi-final (by Korea’s Song Sun-Mi). She was so strong and kept fighting right until the end so I had to try and recover for the final.”

Camilleri has now won events in Darwin, Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne to make it 10 tournament wins on the women’s professional tour.

She can add to that tally at this week’s Tasmanian Open in Hobart, where she is the second seed behind Malaysia’s Sharon Wee.

“Every time I win the pressure builds and it gets harder and harder,” Camilleri said.

“I was going to take a break before the Queensland Open at the end of July, but I thought I’ve been playing so well, I might as well keep going and try and get more titles under the belt.”

04-Jul, Semis:
Former women’s champs
to fight for Victorian Open

Andrew Dent reports

Former champions and Australian teammates Lisa Camilleri and Amelia Pittock will fight it out for the Victorian Open women’s squash title on Sunday afternoon after both won their semi-finals in straight games in the morning.

Second seeded Camilleri, champion in 2007 and 2008, downed Korea’s Song Sun-Mi 13-11, 12-10, 11-7 while 2005 winner Pittock beat her younger Victorian opponent Melody Francis 11-4, 11-3, 12-10.

Camilleri and Pittock have met six times on the women’s professional tour for three wins apiece, most recently in the final of the Top End Open in Darwin in May, where Camilleri won in straight games.

In the men’s competition, the two top seeds won through to the decider, top ranked Zac Alexander beating Dutchman Bart Ravelli 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 and second seed Karwalski overcoming surprise packet Cheng Yao Huang of Taiwan 13-11, 11-6, 11-13, 11-7.

Alexander has not lost to Karwalski on the PSA tour, but their matches are invariably hard fought affairs with only a few points separating the two.

03-Jul, Quarters:
Home finalist guaranteed at Victorian Open

A home finalist in the women’s draw is guaranteed at the Victorian Open squash championships in Melbourne after Amelia Pittock and Melody Francis set up a semi-final showdown.

Pittock, from Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula, shocked top seeded Malaysian Sharon Wee 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 before Melbourne-based Francis beat fellow Victorian Sarah Cardwell 13-11, 11-3, 11-9.

The winner of Sunday morning’s semi-final will take on either second seeded Lisa Camilleri of Queensland or Korean third seed Song Sun-Mi in Sunday afternoon’s final.

Camilleri ended the hopes of Tasmania’s Maggy Marshall 11-2, 11-5, 11-3 and Song downed Austrian Birgit Coufal 11-1, 11-3, 11-3.

Meanwhile, Taiwan’s Cheng Yao Huang continued his giant-killing run when he beat Melbourne’s Rex Hedrick 11-6, 11-13, 11-1, 4-11, 11-7 in the men’s draw.

Huang will play second seeded Matthew Karwalski, who was pushed by Swiss player Reiko Peter 10-12, 11-9, 11-13, 11-2, 11-7.

Top seed Zac Alexander will take on Dutchman Bart Ravelli in the second semi-final.

03-Jul, Round Two:
Marshall crashes way into quarter-finals as Cheng halts Corren
Andrew Dent reports

Hobart’s Maggy Marshall battled her way into the quarter-finals of the Victorian Open squash tournament when she beat former AIS training partner Zoe Petrovansky in five games on Saturday.

Marshall upset the sixth seeded Queenslander 11-8, 9-11, 8-11, 11-1, 11-6 in the only women’s upset of the second round. The 20-year-old Tasmanian, who this week cracked the world top 100 for the first time, now faces second seed Lisa Camilleri in the final eight.

Camilleri, winner of the last three tournaments on the Australian Squash Tour, took four games to see off New Zealand’s Amanda Cranston 11-8, 6-11, 11-5, 11-3.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese player Cheng Yao Huang ended the winning streak of Mike Corren when he stunned the third seeded South Australian 11-7, 11-8, 11-2 in the men’s draw. Corren, like Camilleri, has won the past three tournaments but couldn’t match the unheralded 25-yerar-old from Taipei.

Six-time winner Cameron White continued his run when he beat Australian junior champion Jacob Alexander 11-1, 11-9, 11-3 to set up a quarter-final against top seed Zac Alexander, older brother of Jacob.

02-Jul, Round One:
Former champion relives glory days

Six-time Victorian Open winner Cameron White will be hoping to relive some of his glory days when he lines up for the second round of the championships at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Saturday morning.

White, who won the Victorian Open five times between 2001-05 and again in 2007, retired from the professional tour two years ago. But the 33-year-old from Geelong showed the form that once took him inside the world’s top 50 as he stunned fifth seeded South Australian Justin Beard in straight games 11-8, 11-5, 11-3.

He now plays Australian junior champion Jacob Alexander and has a good chance of progressing to a probable quarter-final against Alexander’s older brother, top seeded Zac.

The only other upset came when Dutchman Frank Hartkoren dashed the hopes of Melbourne’s eighth seeded Josh Cardwell 11-5, 11-9, 11-2.

There was better news for the Cardwell family in the women’s draw when Sarah, also seeded eighth, cruised into the second round with an 11-8, 11-7, 11-8 win over fellow Victorian Vanessa Pickerd. She now faces one of the toughest matches of the second round as she goes up against the experienced Jane Kennedy of New South Wales, a former South African junior champion who is now living in Sydney.

The other highlight of the second round will be the battle between Hobart’s Maggy Marshall and her former AIS training partner Zoe Petrovansky of Brisbane.

Aussie Squash 2010

test for new style minisite

29-Jun-2010:

Serial winners no longer the favourites

Serial 2010 Australian Squash Tour winners Mike Corren and Lisa Camilleri head into this week’s Victorian Open in the unusual position of not being the title favourites.

Corren and Camilleri have both been in excellent form this season, winning their last three tournaments.

Corren took out the City of Perth International, Kalgoorlie’s Golden Open and the South Australian Open in Adelaide, becoming the record tournament winner among current men’s players in the process with 27 PSA titles.

Camilleri claimed the Top End Open in Darwin, the Black Knight Open in Perth and the South Australian Open to take her overall tally to nine titles on the women’s professional tour.

But defending champion Corren goes into the Victorian Open at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre as the third seed behind Zac Alexander and Matthew Karwalski, while Camilleri is ranked behind Malaysia’s Sharon Wee.

Alexander, who beat Corren to win the Top End Open, begins his campaign against a qualifier, while Karwalski opens with a first round match against young South Australian Ben Werchon. Corren is up against Queensland’s Jamie Mcervale, a rising star on the Australian squash scene.

In the women’s draw top seeded Wee has a bye in the first round before a clash with either New Zealand’s Emma Millar or Queensland’s Grace Mcervale, younger sister of Jamie.

Camilleri also has a bye before meeting the winner of the all-New Zealand clash between Amanda Cranston and Alana Sincock.

The Victorian Open has drawn a truly international field this year, with players from Asia, Oceania, Europe and North America all vying to get their names on a trophy also featuring some of the sport’s greatest players.

The hopes for a home winner come mainly in the women’s draw through fourth seed Melody Francis and 2005 champion Amelia Pittock, while the top ranked Victorian men are Rex Hedrick (6) and Josh Cardwell (8).

Men’s qualifying begins on Friday morning, with the men’s and women’s first rounds getting underway on Friday afternoon at 4.00pm.

The finals, which will be webcast on the Victorian Squash website at www.squashvic.com.au, begin at 5.00pm on Sunday.

Australian squash legend Heather McKay, a 14-time winner of the Victorian Open, will be attending the tournament on Sunday, as will seven-time winner Vicki Cardwell, whose two children, Josh and Sarah, are both competing.
