Victorian Open 2012
02-08 Jul, Melbourne, Australia, $10kx2
08-Jul, Finals:
Bloodied Grayson wins Victorian Open

New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson recovered from a blood injury in the fifth game to overcome top seeded Malaysian Nafiizwan Adnan in a superb final to the Victorian Open squash tournament in Melbourne on Sunday.

Grayson was down 4-6 in the fifth when he was hit in the nose by Adnan’s elbow and was forced to take a 20-minute break to stop the bleeding.

But when he returned he looked the fresher of the two players as he took seven of the next nine points to win the final 11-9, 4-11, 8-11, 11-8, 11-8.

“Wan’s a really strong guy and we were both taking up space in the middle – it was very physical,” Grayson said afterwards. “It wasn’t a great time for it to happen.”

It was the second seeded Grayson’s fourth title on the men’s tour and his first since May 2011, and should see him break back into the top 50 when the new rankings are released at the end of the month.

Earlier unseeded Korean Song Sun-Mi won the biggest title of her career when she overcame New Zealand’s Amanda Landers-Murphy in straight games.

Song has been in impressive form all tournament and she dominated the fifth seeded Landers-Murphy in the final to win 12-10, 11-9, 11-7.
The Korean was once ranked as high as 42 in the world but is only just coming back after a lengthy injury break.

It was her second win on the women’s tour, with the other also coming in Australia, at the 2010 NSW Open in Sydney.

She now heads to Hobart for the Tasmanian Open, where she will take on Melbourne’s Nicole Stoneham in the first round.

06-Jul, Quarter-Finals:
Kiwis on the charge in Melbourne

It was a dramatic day of quarter-final action in Melbourne as the seeds continued to suffer in the women's event, while the men's draw saw some marathon matches.

Defending champion Melody Francis went out at the hands of Amanda Landers-Murphy, who now meets fellow Kiwi Kylie Lindsay for a place in the final. Meanwhile Wales' Deon Saffery pulled back from two games down to oust third seed Liu Tsz-Ling (and at 18-16 in the third Deon must surely have saved some match balls) to guarantee an unseeded finalist in the top half of the draw after Korea's Song Sun-Mi beat yesterday's giant-killer Megan Craig in straight games.

A Kiwi finalist is assured from the bottom half of the men's draw too, but Kashif Shuja and Campbell Grayson both needed the full five games to progress, second seed Grayson took 113 minutes to see off local favourite Rex Hedrick.

Top seed Nafiizwan Adnan faces Austria's Aqeel Rehman in the other semi-final.

Once again the finals will be webcast LIVE over the internet from 3.00pm AEST

Round Two in Melbourne

It was a day of contrasts for the seeded players as the Victorian Open reached the last sixteen stage in Melbourne, with all of the men's seeds progressing but some significant upsets in the women's event.

Top seeds Nafiizwan Adnan and Campbell Grayson led the way in the men's draw, with all eight seeds reaching the quarter-finals, Kiwi Kashif Shuja the only one extended to five games.

It was a different story in the women's draw with only four of the seeds making it to the last eight.

The biggest upset was another Kiwi success as Megan Craig outlasted top seed Delia Arnold in a marathon four games, finally winning 12/10 in the fourth after 72 minutes.

She'll meet another unseeded player, Korea's Song Sun-Mi, for a place in the semis.

Path opens for Francis title defence
Andrew Dent reports

Home town favourite Melody Francis had her defence of her Victorian Open crown made slightly easier on Thursday when Megan Craig of New Zealand upset top seeded Malaysian Delia Arnold in four games.

The 11th seeded Kiwi battled past Arnold in four tight games 11-9, 10-12, 12-10, 14-12 to set up a quarter-final against unseeded Korean Song Sun-Mi, who earlier stunned Melbourne’s Sarah Cardwell 11-5, 11-6, 11-0.

Second seeded Francis reached the last eight by beating Hong Kong’s Carmen Lee in five games.

The defending champion was cruising at two games to love before having to survive a fight back from Lee, eventually winning 11-7, 11-6, 3-11, 4-11, 11-4.

She now plays New Zealand’s Amanda Landers-Murphy, who she beat to win last month’s Barossa Valley Open in South Australia.

In contrast to the women, where four of the top seeds fell, the top eight men all progressed to the quarter-finals.

There will be two Trans-Tasman clashes in the bottom half of the draw, with third seeded New South Welshman Matthew Karwalski taking on Kashif Shuja and Melbourne’s Rex Hedrick to face second seed Campbell Grayson.

Karwalski beat Queensland’s Nathan Stevenson 12-10, 11-5, 11-5, while Hedrick downed his coach Cameron White 11-8, 11-3, 11-7.

Meanwhile, top seed Nafiizwan Adnan recovered from almost bowing out in the first round by beating young Kiwi Evan Williams 13-11, 11-3, 11-7 to set up a quarter-final against Argentina’s Gonzalo Miranda.

Once again the finals will be webcast LIVE over the internet from 3.00pm AEST

Victorian Open back and bigger
Fiona Young reports

The Victorian Open Squash Championships will be played at the Melbourne Sports & Aquatic Centre in Victoria, Australia over the week of 2 – 8 July 2012.

Squash Vic is pleased to announce two major sponsors for this year’s event – The Victorian State Government and Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club.

Fiona Young, the Executive Director of Squash Vic said, "Thanks to our sponsors we have increased the status and prize money this year which means a jump up in rankings points available for both the Men's and Women's events. Squash Vic is committed to building the event each year and we are now the second largest tournament behind the Australian Open. Our sport doesn’t get a lot of media profile but with the live webcast we are doing our bit to get squash out and about.”

The Men's Open is a PSA Challenger 10 event and the Women's Open is registered as a WSA Tour 10 event - both are 32 player draws. Qualifying commences on Monday July 2 for the men and Tuesday July 3 for the women with first round matches for both events on Wednesday July 4.

Players confirmed to play this year are from countries including Egypt, Canada, New Zealand, England, Argentina, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Switzerland, Korea, Pakistan, Cayman Islands, Austria, Malaysia and Australia.

There are 22 players with top-100 world rankings who have entered the tournament.
