Grinham & Grayson
clinch Victorian Open crowns

Andrew Dent reports

Queensland’s Rachael Grinham claimed her first ever Victorian Open title when she downed New Zealander Megan Craig in straight games at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre (MSAC) on Sunday.

The seventh seeded Craig fought hard in the first two games before Grinham ran away with the third to win 11-8, 12-10, 11-2 and claim her 32nd title on the Women’s Squash Association tour.

There was some joy for New Zealand in the men’s draw when Campbell Grayson beat Innisfail’s Steve Finitsis 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 to successfully defend his title from last year.

It was a triumphant return to the all-glass court at MSAC for Grinham, who won the women’s doubles and took silver in the women’s singles at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

The 36-year-old is still in great shape and said she was now targeting the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

“I feel good and I’m playing well at the moment, so I’m looking forward to the rest of the year,” she said after her win.

“At the moment it’s just a case of me looking after my body – if I can move, I will play okay. I’m trying to look after myself and am aiming to be there at the Commonwealth Games.”

Grinham’s next outing will be as part of the Australian team at the World Games in Cali, Colombia, which begin on July 25.

Grayson was always in control of the men’s against Finitsis, who had two huge matches on the way to the decider and looked sluggish at times against the Kiwi number one.

The top seeded Grayson eased away with the first two games then held off a fast finishing Finitsis to clinch the third and win the seventh title of his career and his second of the year.

“The first two games were even at the beginning but I managed to pull away in the middle, but he’s a real fighter and I got a bit nervous when he started coming back at me,” Grayson said.

“I managed to sneak that third game in the end.”

Finitsis has now lost two finals in two weeks, but he gets a chance to make amends at next week’s Tasmanian Open, where he is seeded third behind Adelaide’s Mike Corren and Malaysian Ivan Yuen.

13-Jul, Semis:
Grinham and Finitsis keep home hopes alive

Hopes  of a home double were kept alive in Melbourne after contrasting victories by Rachael Grinham and Steve Finitsis in today's semi-finals.

Top seed Grinham wasted no time in despatching Amanda Landers-Murphy, the third seed, in just 18 minutes, and in the final she will face another Kiwi after Megan Craig upset Malaysian second seed Delia Arnold in an hour-plus five-setter.

Finitsis, seeded eight, needed five games to see off young Malaysian Ivan Yuen, who looked out of it at 2-1 and 6-2 down, but fought back to lead 7-5 in the decider before eventually succumbing to the big Aussie in 90 minutes.

Finitsis will face top seeded Kiwi Campbell Grayson, who beat Matthew Karwalski in straight games, in the final.

Finitsis downs second seed
Andrew Dent reports

Queensland’s Steve Finitsis continued his recent run of good form to upset second seeded New Zealander Martin Knight and reach the semi-finals of the Victorian Open in Melbourne on Friday.

A week after reaching the final of the Buler Challenge Cup in Hong Kong, the 30-year-old from Innisfail downed Knight 11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 11-3 in just over an hour at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.

Finitsis, who is playing his first tournament in Australia in almost three years, will now play Ivan Yuen for a place in Sunday’s final after the young Malaysian upset third seeded Australian Zac Alexander 11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 4-11, 11-6,

Finitsis defeated Yuen at the same stage of last week’s Hong Kong tournament.

The second semi-final will be between top seed and defending champion Campbell Grayson of New Zealand and New South Welshman Matthew Karwalski.

Grayson saw off dangerous Indian Mahesh Mangaonkar 11-8, 11-4, 12-10, while Karwalski took an hour and a half before edging AIS teammate Rex Hedrick 9-11, 11-7, 14-12, 4-11, 11-8.

Women’s top seed Rachael Grinham continued her impressive run with a straight games win over fellow Queenslander Lisa Camilleri 11-5, 11-1, 11-6.

She will play Kiwi Amanda Landers-Murphy in the first semi-final, with the winner to take on either New Zealand’s Megan Craig or second seeded Malaysian Delia Arnold.

11-Jul, Round Two
Camilleri charges into Melbourne quarters as Corren makes early exit
Andrew Dent reports

Former champion Lisa Camilleri stunned fifth seeded Welsh player Tesni Evans in straight games to reach the quarter-finals of the Victorian Open squash tournament in Melbourne on Thursday.

Camilleri, who won the Vic Open in 2010, showed she is getting back to her pre-injury best during her 11-7, 11-6, 11-9 win over the talented 20-year-old from Cardiff.

Camilleri was off the court for 18 months with a chronic ankle injury in 2011-12 before making her comeback in January.
She said she went into the match against Evans with a game plan to keep her pinned to the back of the court and take away Evans’s dangerous drop shots and short game.

Camilleri now takes on fellow Queenslander Rachael Grinham in the quarter-finals after the top seed beat Frenchwoman Chloe Mesic 11-6, 11-6, 11-3.

“Rachael’s a different class altogether. I’m disappointed that I’ve got to play the number one seed so early but I’ve got nothing to lose,” she said.

“I find it hard to play Rachael because it’s hard to read where she’s hitting the ball -- she mixes it up so much.”

Two other women’s seeds fell in the second round, with New Zealand’s Kylie Lindsay (4) losing to 2012 champion Song Sung-Mi of Korea 11-4, 11-4, 11-4, and Melody Francis, the seventh seed and 2011 champion, falling to fellow AIS player Tamika Saxby 11-8, 11-9, 11-7.

Only one seed bowed out of the men’s draw with sixth ranked Mike Corren losing a tight four game clash against exciting 19-year-old Indian Mahesh Mangaonkar.

Corren took the first game before Mangaonkar came back to win the next three and take the match 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10.

The clash of the round should come when AIS teammates Matthew Karwalski and Rex Hedrick meet.

Karwalski downed Paul Coll of New Zealand 11-9, 12-10, 11-6 and Hedrick dispatched Finland’s Jaakko Vahamaa 11-5, 11-3, 11-2.

10-Jul, Round One
Grinham watches on
as seeds progress in Melbourne

Andrew Dent reports

Victorian Open tournament drawcard Rachael Grinham was an interested spectator on Wednesday as the top ranked players stamped their class on the rest of the field.

The second round gets underway at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Thursday, with women’s top seed Grinham making her long awaited Victorian Open debut after a first round bye.

Grinham has never played the Vic Open despite being on tour since 1994, and begins on Thursday against 14th seeded Frenchwoman Chloe Mesic, who downed local hope Selena Shaikh 11-6, 11-2, 11-6.

Second seeded Malaysian Delia Arnold also had a bye on Wednesday and also plays a Frenchwoman, Laura Pomportes, in the second round. Pomportes was too strong for Queensland’s Lakeesha Rarere 11-4, 11-6, 11-9.

Former women’s champions Song Sun Mi of Korea and Australians Melody Francis and Lisa Camilleri also progressed.

Song thumped Argentine Belen Etchechoury 11-1, 11-1, 11-2, hometown hero Francis downed fellow Melbourne player Melissa Bonello 11-3, 11-4, 11-5 and Camilleri was too strong for India’s Aparajitha Balamurukan 11-6, 11-4, 11-6.

In the men’s draw, top seeded Kiwi Campbell Grayson, who won a 110-minute classic against Malaysia’s Nafiizwan Adnan to win the title in 2012, survived a tough opening match against Caboolture’s Nathan Stevenson 9-11, 11-3, 11-7, 11-3.

Grayson now takes on South Australia’s Justin Beard in the second round.

Other winners included second seeded New Zealander Martin Knight, who beat Hong Kong’s Cheuk Yan Tang 11-4, 11-3, 11-6, third seed Zac Alexander, an 11-5, 11-8, 11-4 winner over Malaysian Mithran Selvaratnam, and 2009 champion Mike Corren, who defeated former PSA tour player Cameron White 11-9, 11-9, 12-10.
