Round One Match Highlights
A
clinical display from new world #6 Borja Golan to
open proceedings as he despatches French qualifier Mathieu
Castagnet in straight games.
Then Egyptian maestro Amr Shabana recovered from a
game down to beat Chris Simpson in four, Shabana looking
quite comfortable once he got into the match.
Peter Barker became the third seeded player to win, getting
the better of Cameron Pilly in a seesaw five-setter, the
Englishman taking the first, third and a comfortable fifth
game.
Daryl
Selby had to work pretty hard to shake off the Acrobat
Marche, and the Frenchman came very close, but just got a
bit too excited at times, while the Englishman kept his cool
at all times. In the 5th, Daryl "took everything and gave
nothing"...
As for Greg Gaultier,
he truly dominated young Englishman Adrian Waller, who found
a few nice winners, but far too many errors to put any kind
of pressure on the defending champion.
Three-time Swedish Open champion Nick Matthew took on
fellow Englishman Tom Richards, and the joint world number
one was in impressive form as he led from start to finish
with Richards, despite getting close in the first and third
games - saving three match balls to force extra points in
the third - was never quite able to get on terms.
Sweden's wildcard Rasmus Hult put in a great showing
to push eighth seed Omar Mosaad all the way. The
local player had four game balls to take the lead but Mosaad
held on to take it 13/11, and always had a slight advantage
in the next two games.
As for the Artist, he was facing probably the
toughest of draws. Simon plays the kind of squash that can
really trouble Ramy at the best of times (remember Paderborn
and the World Teams). The Egyptian seemed to be moving
alright, but was he relaxed, comfortable and fluid? Not for
a second. All credit to Simon's immaculate squash. Still,
first match back, check.
Tomorrow, the world number 4 (still sounds very weird to
associate those words to Ramy) will be facing another huge
challenge - Mosaad -with whom he always has gigantic battles,
and against whom he got injured back in the Worlds' in Qatar
last year. That will be playing on the Artist's mind for
sure...
