COURT CLEANING

... Or how to make it shiny but cheap, in Aberdeen... Alistair Gorrie tells you how....

Members of Aberdeen Squash & Racketball Club carried out more voluntary work (we usually call upon them 3/4 times a year) this past week with the most labourous of jobs known to man - COURT CLEANING!

It's a job we keep in-house purely as a cost saving measure. We usually time this activity shortly before the weekend of the North Of Scotland BSPA and Scottish National Masters Championships.

Members are asked to put in a shift (however long they can manage) in return for a free drink at the bar for every hour of work carried out.

The return for them is small but the whole thing is about helping the Club. We've 7 courts here at ASRC, and so the job isn't exactly a small one.

After a few years practice we have come up with what we think is the best way to clean squash courts at a very small cost. The results are fantastic and here's how we do it:
  • Get as many volunteers as possible.
  • Work with between 6 and 12 people per court.
  • Ensure you have ample buckets, heavy dity grill scourers, sugar soap (all available from B&Q), and towels.
  • Lay down some form of protective sheeting on the floor (avoids stains).
  • Fill buckets half full with hot water and add sugar soap (about 1 part sugar soap to 10 parts water).
Simply scrub an area (squared foot) and wipe down with towel. Repeat several times over until every square foot of wall is done.
  • For areas above your maximum reach use either scaffolding (see photo), a scissor lift, or even just a conventional ladder.
  • Once done, mop floor (in particular around the nicks whether residue has gathered) with just water.

Cost of materials per court - £20
Total labour hours per court - 3 (based on 8 people)
Cost of supplying drinks per court - £30 (based on 8 people taking 3 drinks at a little over £1 per drink)

Total Cost per court - £50

It really is a god awful job but when everyone chips in, when music is playing, and when people know they have free drink waiting for them up in then Bar after they are done, it does become just that little bit easier.

A special mention must go to the ever enthusiastic Jamie Jacobsen (aka Farmer). The man was there from start to finish on all 3 days and even had his 2 boys, Harry and Arthur, helping out.

For Farmer alone that's 3 hours multiplied by 7 courts, so 21 drinks to be had, and you know what he drinks (and what he drinks only)???

I'll give you one more guess ................................

Tap water!
