09-Nov, Day TWO:
Multinational qualifiers in Doha
The 13th edition of the Qatar Classic in Doha saw eight
players - all of different nationalities - book their places
in the main draw of the PSA $150k World Series event at the
Khalifa International Tennis & Squash Complex in Doha.
The
first player through was Finland’s qualifying top seed
Olli Tuominen, who came through an up and down five game
encounter with Charles Sharpes, quickly followed by Eypt’s
Mohamed Abouelghar who produced a second successive
upset as he beat compatriot Ali Anwar Reda in four games.
France’s Gregoire Marche beat Andrew Wagih, taking
three of the four games comfortably, and Denmark’s
Kristian Frost beat Kuwaiti Ammar Altamimi with
increasing authority in three games.
M alaysia’s
Nafiizwan Adnan - wearing tracksuit bottoms for his
first game as he’d forgotten his shorts - won three of his
five games comfortably to deny Harinderpal Sandhu, whille
Hong Kong’s Max Lee survived a tight and often
physical encounter with Omar Abdel Meguid in four games.
Australian Ryan Cuskelly edged the first two games
against Nasir Iqbal before easing through the third, and
England’s Joe Lee finished the day off by coming from
1-2 down and saving two match balls in his decider against
Marwan Elshorbagy.
In a quirk of the draw, the highest-ranked player that any of
the qualifiers now faces is Egypt’s 8th seed Tarek Momen -
that honour falls to Frost - but that definitely doesn’t
mean any of them are going to have an easy time in their
first round matches which take place over the next two days,
all on the Glass Court at the Khalifa complex.
