Shorbagy gets the El Gouna trophy at last
World
number one Mohamed Elshorbagy finally laid his hands
on the El Gouna International trophy after losing out to
Ramy Ashour in the 2014 and 2015 finals, but the top seed
had to come from two games down against world champion
Gregory Gaultier to do it,
The Frenchman controlled the first, then trailed for most of
the second before a late surge saw him double his lead.
Shorbagy
fought back to take the third decisively, then came from 4-8
down to take the fourth and force a decider.
The
fifth was a tense and dramatic affair, Shorbagy edging ahead
from the middle of the game and then, with the crowd going
wild after - and sometimes during - every rally, closed it
out for a famous victory to add yet another World Series
title to his tally.
"Thanks
to Greg for a fantastic match, it's always a battle when we
play he's such a tough competitor and I really had to work
hard to get back from two games down," said the new
Champion.
"It feels great to win this title after losing such great
matches for the last two years, Greg and the crowd made it
another great match.
"Thanks to all the sponsors, and particularly to Amr Mansi,
he's made this into the best tournament on the circuit and I
hope it keeps going for many years, I'll definitely be back
to defend it as many times as I can."
