14-Jul-08:
Matthew comeback at
Forexx Dutch Open
Nick
Matthew is set to make his return to international
competition during the Forexx Dutch Open Squash 2008, which is
being held from 2nd to 7th of September in the renowned Frans
Otten Stadion in Amsterdam.
The Dutch PSA 3 star event will be the world number seven’s
first professional tournament after undergoing surgery to his
right shoulder which kept him out of action for more than six
months.
The shoulder injury came at an unfortunate time for the 27-year
old Englishman who had an impressive end to 2007. After a slight
setback with an ankle injury, sustained in January, Matthew
finished off the year on a high by claiming the US Open
title beating Thierry Lincou in the quarters, Ramy Ashour in the
semis and compatriot James Willstrop in the final. He also
reached the semi finals of the World Open in Bermuda and
finished runner-up at the English Open in his hometown
Sheffield.
On
top of that Matthew led a strong English team, supported by
countrymen James Willstrop, Lee Beachill and Peter Barker, to
win the world title during the Men's World Team Championships
in India last December, beating Australia 2-1 in the final.
“We are extremely excited that Nick has chosen the Forexx Dutch
Open to make his comeback on the PSA scene, he is without doubt
a great asset for our event,” said tournament director Tommy
Berden.
“Not only is he one of the best players in the world, but his
fast and aggressive style of play makes him very exciting to
watch. We still have three more weeks before entries close, so
we are working hard to ensure that we can present another world
class player at the men’s side in addition to Nick and our Dutch
favourite Laurens Jan Anjema,” said the former Dutch champion.
Earlier this month tournament organizers Next Events
announced the participation of the world’s number one and two
female players, Nicol David and
Natalie Grinham.
