16-Oct, Qualifying Round One:
Channel VAS Qualifying under way at St
George's Hill
The 2017 edition of the Channel VAS Championship gor under way
at St George's Hill LTC in Surrey with eight matches in a
qualifying draw that would do justice to many a major main draw.

Match Reports, Quotes & Photos Eight of
the seeded players won to progress to tomorrow's qualifying
finals, the exception being Egyptian fourth seed Karim Ali Fathi,
who lost out to Germany's Raphael Kandra in three close
games.
Kandra now meets St George's favourite Tom Richards, the
eighth seed who twice came from a game down to deny young
Egyptian Youssef Soliman, who almost reduced big deficits at the
end of the fourth and fifth games.
Top seed Cameron Pilley, a player who's been a fixture in
the top twenty for eight years so isn't often seen in
qualifying, eased past Lance Beddoes, the Kiwi now playing for
St George's Hill in PSL. Pilley's opponent in the finals is
England's Adrian Waller, who came through an intense and
occasionally argumentative five games against Scotland's Greg
Lobban.
Third seeded Indian Saurav Ghosal who beat one of St
George's Hill's local entries Matthew Broadberry in straight
games, setting up a meeting with Declan James, the
sixth-seeded Englishman looking in good form as he beat Finnish
veteran Olli Tuominen in three games.
The fourth qualifying final sees Colombian Miguel Rodriguez
- a top five player just over a year ago - take on the inaugural
2015 champion here, Chris Simpson.
Simpson wasted little time in beating St George's Tristan Eysele
in three, while Rodriguez was given a stern test by Charles
Sharpes, the Englishman levelling the match at one-all but then
being forced to retire injured early in the fourth.

Match Reports, Quotes & Photos Qualifying
finals start at 5pm on Tuesday, all on the Glass Court, and
tickets are still available via Ticketmaster on on the door at
£10.
