Top seeds take Artemis titles

The Artemis Edinburgh Open was won by the top two seeds today as they proved too strong against opponents who had played some hard games to get to this stage. Vicky Botwright controlled her match against Vicky Lust who had come off the back of two 5 setters - the first from two games down against young Scot, Lisa Aitken and the second to overcome no.2 seed Becky Botwright in the semi-final.

World No.9 Peter Barker took the men's title with a 3-0 win over 3/4 seed John Rooney. Barker looked on great form and Rooney looked to tire from the pace of the game after a long tournament in which he had to overcome Stacey Ross and Scotland's Alan Clyne in the semi-final.

Edinburgh Sports Club's famous court five was a sell out for the finals.

Lewis Walters beat Andrew Widdison to win the U23 event.

Clyne's Run Over

The Scottish run finally came to an end in the semi finals when Alan Clyne met his match in the talented John Rooney who now goes on to face world no.9 Peter Barker in the final. Barker got a walkover after Steven Meads pulled out injured following a 1hr 45min epic against former champion Simon Parke in the quarters.

Vicky Botwright moved smoothly into the final with a 3 game win over Fiona Moverley and Vicky Lust upset the seedings in the bottom half of the draw beating the no.2 seed Becky Botwright in 5.

Clyne makes
Artemis semis

Scottish hopes are still alive with Alan Clyne of Inverness who today beat no.2 seed Andy Whipp to reach the semi-final of the Artemis Championships where he meets Irishman John Rooney at 6.30pm.

Peter O'Hara's valliant run came to an end when he met world no.9 Peter Barker today and both remaining Scottish girls went out, Senga Macfie to no.1 seed Vicky Botwright and Lisa Aitken went two up before losing in 5 to 3/4 seed Vicky Lust.

Barker & Botwright
top Artemis draws

Peter Barker, World No 9, tops the seedings at this year’s Artemis Edinburgh Open Squash Championships to be held at the Edinburgh Sports Club on 29 January - 1 February. Also appearing are defending champion Daryl Selby - World No 33 – and, in the ladies event, Vicky Botwright - World No 14 and 2008 World Open Finalist.

Barker & Selby are seeded to meet in the Men's Final. Botwright is seeded to meet her sister Becky – currently ranked 10 in England – in the Ladies Final. The home challenge is led by Scottish National Champions Alan Clyne (Scotland’s No 1) and Senga Macfie.

Artemis, the Edinburgh based investment management company, are sponsoring the event for the ninth consecutive year. The event remains the richest on the BSPA Grand Prix with a total prize fund of £10,000.

Mark Tyndall, Chief Executive of Artemis, says:

"Artemis is delighted to continue to support the Edinburgh Open Squash Championships. Since its inaugural event nine years ago, the championship has become a firm fixture on the international squash calendar. "It is also a great opportunity to showcase local talent permitting young players, perhaps for the first time, to gain invaluable experience by competing at the top level."

Ian Williams, Manager at Edinburgh Sports Club, is delighted with the Artemis announcement:

"We are greatly honoured that Artemis have extended their sponsorship through to 2010. It is wonderful news for the Club and a boost for squash in Scotland generally. This event continues to give spectators a wonderful opportunity to watch squash of the highest quality being played over a four-day period."
