Matthew
on fire in Edinburgh
Nick Matthew won the Artemis Edinburgh Open with a scintillating
display against fellow Yorkshireman Marcus Berrett at the
Edinburgh Sports Club. Berrett, who was also runner up in last year's
final, simply had no answer to the range of shots and skill of the world
number seven.
"Nick was fantastic," said tournament director Simon Boughton, "it was a
really impressive display."
"It was just a game too far for me," said Berrett, who had beaten second
seed Rodney Durbach on his way to the final. "I played all my best
squash yesterday and there wasn't much left in the tank, but Nick played
very well."
Matthew, playing his first event since a shock first round exit in
Chicago, was pleased with his weekend's work. "I've been struggling with
niggling injuries for a while now," he said, "but I felt myself getting
faster and sharper as the tournament went on. It's good to get a few
games under my belt, it will have done me good."
Matthew also felt that conditions in Edinburgh suited him. "The court
here, with spectators around the side walls, is very similar to
Abbeydale in Sheffield, so I felt quite at home in the conditions.
The court rewards shots at the front of the court, which suited my game
today."
In the women's final Rebecca Macree beat Stephanie Brind
in four games, to make it one BSPA title each so far this season.
Next stop on the circuit is the
Grantham Open next week, where
Macree and Brind are seeded to meet in the semi-finals. Berrett is a 3/4
seed for Grantham, behind John White and Adrian Grant.

29-Jan, Quarters/Semis:
Berrett's
BSPA form continues
Second seed Rodney Durbach,
who stepped in to replace Mark Chaloner in the draw, became the latest
victim of BSPA Grand Prix champion Marcus Berrett in the
quarter-finals at Edinburgh Sports Club. Berrett, who does not play on
the PSA tour, makes a habit of beating highly-ranked opponents on the
Grand Prix circuit.
In the semi-finals Berrett went on to beat Peter Genever in
straight games to reach another BSPA final - the Yorkshireman contested
four finals on last year's circuit, and won this season's opener in
Boston last month.
Top seed Nick Matthew easily passed Steve Meads in the
quarters, but it was a much tougher struggle for Alex Gough.
The Welshman was 2-1 down to Stacey Ross before recovering to
take the finals two game, both 11/8. The effort told, as Matthew beat
Gough in straight games in the evening's semi-final.
Top women in points race ...
In the women's event top seeds
Rebecca Macree and Stephanie Brind have sailed through to the
finals, dropping just ten points between them in their first two rounds.
In the semis both dropped a game, Macree to Sue Wright, making a
welcome return to competitive action, and Brind to Pamela Nimmo,
who stepped in to replace Senga Macfie in the draw.

28-Jan:
Andy Whipps Heath
Hopes of a home win in Edinburgh were dashed when Andy Whipp
scored an upset win over Martin Heath in the second round at
Edinburgh Sports Club. Whipp now faces Welshman Alex Gough in the
quarter-finals. Top seed Nick Matthew remains on course for an
anticipated final clash with South Africa's Rodney Durbach, who
replaced Mark Chaloner at the bottom of the draw.
In the women's event the top seeds are all still in contention,
including local favourite Pam Nimmo, who stepped in to replace
Senga Macfie and proceeded to thrash her opponent 27-0! The scoreline
was repeated by top seed Rebecca Macree, and second seed
Stephanie Brind dropped just two points in her first match.
13-Jan-04
Matthew and Macree top Artemis Draws
England's Nick Matthew and
Rebecca Macree are top seeds
for the Artemis Edinburgh Open, the second event on the BSPA's Head UK
Grand Prix, which gets under way at Edinburgh Sports Club on 28th
Jan.
Matthew, the world no 7 from Sheffield, faces opposition from all
corners of the UK, with England's Mark Chaloner, Wales' Alex
Gough and Scotland's Martin Heath filling the top four
seeding positions. With Grand Prix champion Marcus Berrett, Steve Meads,
Stacey Ross and Peter Genever as 5/8
seeds there is strength in depth in the draw and Edinburgh fans are in
for as treat as the men battle it out for the £1,000 top prize.
In the women's event Macree, the world number seven, is seeded to meet
Kent's Stephanie Brind in the final, but Scotland's Senga
Macfie and England's Sue Wright, both making rare tournament
appearances, look dangers in the 3/4 seed positions.
