21-Mar, Round One:
Egyptian women's qualifiers stun seeds
as top two men's seeds survive five-setters
It was busy day in Hull as the 2017 British Open got into
gear with 32 first round matches, 24 at the University
and 8 on the glass court at the Airco Arena.
There were no upsets as the top seeds started their campaign on
the glass court, but defending champion Mohamed Elshorbagy
and world champion Karim Abdel Gawad were both takes to
five games by fellow Egyptians Fares Dessouky and Omar Mosaad.
At the University the day's headlines also belonged to Egyptians
as qualifiers Mayar Hany and Nada Abbas recorded
wins over 9th seeded Kiwi Joelle King and last year's runner-up,
4th seeded Nouran Gohar.
Meanwhile on the men's side Max Lee staged a recovery
from two-nil down to beat 6th seeded Marwan Elshorbagy while
Mathieu Castagnet prevailed in a tough first round match
against world #6 James Willstrop.
Round two takes place over two days at the Airco Arena.
