5th, Day FOUR
The finalists are decided after another long
day at Abbeydale and Hallamshire.
It was a day of
dramatic semi-finals in Sheffield, with
seven of the eight matches at Abbeydale
going the way of Egypt, while at Hallamshire
Egyptian were winners in six matches. The
top seeds in all eight events won through to
the finals, which meant the end of home
interest.
 At
Abbeydale the day started with a five-setter
as B15 top seed Marwan Tarek came
through a see-saw all-Egyptian match against
Mohamed El Shamy, taking the decider with a
comfortable 11/1 scoreline.
The second semi lokked as though it was
going all the way too, but underdog Ahmad
Almashad, who never stops running and
never gives anything up, put in a spirited
recovery from 4-8 down in the fourth to beat
second seed Mostafa Assal.
 The
first G15 semi-final was also all-Egyptian,
and equally fiercely contested with top seed
Hania El Hammamy coming from a game
down against Amina Yasser to win in four,
but needed extra points in two of those
games.
It was more comfortable for second seed
Rawan Reda as she beat fellow Egyptian
Hana Moataz in straight games.
 In
the G19 there was another scare for the top
seed, Nouran Gohar saving three match
balls in a tense fourth game before finally
getting the better of Salma Hany in the
decider. “I still can’t believe I managed to
win that,” said a relieved Nouran long after
the match had finished.
Second seed Mariam Metwally took a
good start in all three games against Nele
Gilis, playing in her last junior event, and
the Belgian could never quite get back on
terms as Metwally went through to an
all-Egyptian final
 Top
seed in the B19 Diego Elias faced the
last English hope in George Parker, and the
Peruvian dominated the first game and a
half. Parker fought back well from 4-8 down
in the second. “I’m not sure how I managed
to take that game,” he said afterwards, “but
I was glad I did. That was as good as it
got
though as Elias dominated the last two games
to reach the final.
 He’ll
face second seed Omar El Artmas, who
came from a game down to beat India’s Kush
Kumar in a match of ferocious pace. Atmas
was in the end just too strong, and too
determined.
Over at Hallamshire the matches were
generally quicker, but there were some
outstanding performances and a few upsets,
notably by unseeded Pakistani Harris
Qasim in the B17, Malaysia's Jessica
Keng in the G13, and Egypt's Zena
Mekiwy in the G17.
