Porto Cup 2013
19-24 Nov, Porto, Portugal, $5k
24-Nov, Day SIX,, Final:
Fuller takes the title in Porto
Paulo Pinto reports

The day promised to deliver as advertised all great moments of squash ! In reality nobody felt cheated because there were many electrifying moments and it was actually really decent time to watch a live!

We begin with an intense performance of Allalantou, a School of Music and Dance of the West African coast that gave us an early show with their musics and with a very interesting performance of her dancers! As announced, were elements of weekly classes that learn in the Sports Complex of Monte Aventino .

After we started the grand finale! The two British enter in court nº 3 of Monte Aventino and an audience and platform full of people!

These naturally highlight the presence of many good friends and squash, which took advantage of this opportunity to once again say this at the time when our squash really need ! Friends of Figueira and Porto had not seen a good stop for years and decided to come watch the cleverly odd times!

Despite the initial study between the players, Chris Fuller took the reins of the game! Faster and without losing the advantage, succeeded with a final tip in this game very effective!

Alex Ingham had to literally roll up to stay in the game and it was really what happened! Faster and without committing many unforced errors, reversed roles and also managed a very effective final tip on transitions, targeted attacks!

All balanced but already beginning to denote a distinct freshness in Chris ! Although balance in the first half, Chris began to press with a stronger game and the transitions started giving points in flurry! So Chris offered an advantage that would prove to be decisive!

In the fourth game despite the initial equilibrium, Chris would not let escape one more time and took his game to an efficacy that Alex actually only contradicted the spaces !

Thus Chris closing the 11/4 , not only won the game as secured his first victory in a tournament PSA 5K ( beautiful site - modesty aside , to Chris remember throughout his career ) !

Thus ended the PORTO CUP PSA 2013!

In the Closing Ceremony and Awards , which fell to me opening the same , we also count with the presence of Dr. Luís Alves (New Executive Director of PORTO LAZER ) and of course Dr. Bruno Dias ( President of the National Squash Federation) .

Delivery of trophies and awards for the two athletes completed the course and was told that a small speech to Chris Fuller !

Chris thanked everyone into be in the final , said it was a special moment not for only faced and won a great athlete but because he has secured is first victory in a PSA 5K ! Thanked how it was conducted and of course that made it clear that the organization is in congratulations!

After Dr. Luís Alves spoke also on behalf of the Municipality of Porto. He start with the fact that agree with the words of Chris and asserting that the Board and the PORTO LAZER course he's proud to partner on events like the PORTO CUP and that part of it will do everything to maintain the partnership and who knows maybe increase participation !

It fell to Dr. Bruno Dias end the ceremony and his words highlight two facts ! For the Federation , which naturally have liked the Partnership for the National event, much like it to be a partner for events like these especially because bringing Portugal international athletes of great level ! The Federation , states be available to frame events as PORTO CUP PSA in the National Squash scenario knowing that they contribute decisively to the evolution of our athletes and consequently our squash !

Do not finish without thanking the presence of all over these days and of course a word of encouragement and courage to all athletes who clashed in the squash courts of Sports Complex of Monte Aventino! Believe me, continue to work and do everything to enjoy moments like these !

That's all for today and up to PORTO CUP & PORTO CUP PSA 2014

PS - Special thanks to my friends , Luis Carvalho , Nuno Babo , José Aguiar , Bruno Dias and of course my daughter Salome Pinto who led the Tournament daily !

23-Nov, Day FIVE, semis:
Fullerr and Ingham make Porto final
Paulo Pinto reports

Chris Fuller bt Ben Coleman 3-2

Starting with moments of squash simply awesome! Intense rallies with two athletes give everything for the deserved victory ! Ben or Chris fought determined.

The time of 1h and 42 ' makes it clear that the fight did not miss ! From the third game began to be apparent that Chris was fresher physically ! After the 4 game Chris did what he wanted with Ben and brilliantly concluded the match with the 4/ 11 final !

Chris Fuller thus secured its third appearance in the final of a PSA 5K ! Let's see if this outcome is different from the previous two!

Alex Ingham v Ollie Holland 3-1

In the first game Ollie went very well and quickly gained the lead to 6 / 0 ! Alex was patiently attacking at the right time and got an amazing turnaround for the 11/9 Final . After the second game, Alex failed to minimally contain the avalanche striker and variations of Ollie . Very effective in just over 10 minutes defeated Alex !

Alex had to get to the response to the event and suffered with a game, managed to withstand all pressures and won by 8/11 ! Long rallies early in the game , but after a complete turnaround in strategy with short Rallies but very effective in pressure for Ollie! In the tourth game we had balance until 7/7!

Ollie would score but the 7/7 Alex attacked with more certainty and could quickly 10/7 . Then despite allowing a point , withstood the pressure and excitement of reaching the final and quietly closed the match !

22-Nov, Day FOUR, quarters:
It's all England  in Porto
Paulo Pinto reports

Quarter-final matches concluded with extensive and high quality squash! We have in the semi-finals the English Chris Fuller , Alex Ingham , Ollie Holland and Ben Coleman!

The first match of the day was a 3-2 between Chris Fuller and Alex Garbi ! Alex began by winning the first two games but after a noticeable loss of momentum and strength , allowed the recovery to the English ! The score, 7/11 ; 5/11 ; 11/9 , 11 /7 and 11/7, make clear the reality !

Good match with intense rallies and two athletes not to give up fighting! But as always in these cases the winner turns out to be the one who suffers most and put up with all the foresight to stay in the game!

Second match of the day the only one with a clear 3-0 ! Alex Ingham defeated James Earles 11/9 , 11 /9 and 11/5 . The first two games , Alex had luck on his side but also worked for the win !

There remained focused and always attacked at the right time ! In the third game , it seemed that James was willing to fight but something failed! Made successive unforced errors and gave too marked advantage for Alex!

Then another fantastic match ! Ollie Holland played against Joan Lezaud and defeated him by 3-2 5/11, 11/6, 12/10, 8/11 and 11/ 8! It was the most balanced match of the night with electrifying moments of squash !

Awesome time 1h38m makes clear delivery of athletes and quite honestly despite Ollie surprise some of the people, was making it clear that he was there to win the semi -finals! Very consistent and a very strong in physical availability was conquering its space at the right time clung tooth and nail to rallies ! Just another brilliant victory of this young player that ensure is first semi-final of a tournament PSA Chalenger $ 5,000.00 !

Finally the match between Ben Coleman and Reiko Peter.

Intense match with the Swiss to fight determined. Lost the first game , but with an impressive claw, won the next two games ! After Ben has done its homework and it remained in the game. Smart took the lead early on and despite doing everything Reiko was not enough .

In the fifth and final game , Ben managed the demands of the first seeded player ! Won by 9/11 very smart in is playing way! Reiko still managed to equal the 9/9 but two very fast rallies generate the final result with score 11/7 , 6/11 , 5/11 , 11 /8 and 11/9 ! Big and intense day. We started at 17:00 and ended at 22:40 H !

I think I can say that the quality and intensity come in growing and as such the games of tomorrow are certainly moments not to be missed !

All to Monte Aventino as our squash athletes deserve your presence in these semi-finals too! The first semi-final starts at 17:00 and the second count that starts at 18:00 H !

21-Nov, Day THREE
Round One in Porto
Paulo Pinto reports

We have five British athletes, one Swiss, one Spaniard and one French in the quarter- final of PORTO CUP PSA 2013!
Claudio Pinto was defeated by the seed No. 1 the English Ben Colemam by 3-0 with partial 11/4 , 11 /4 and 11/9 .

We start at 17:00 H clashes between Ollie Holland V Matin Mosnik and French Joan Lezaud V Johan Bouquet ! Ollie to do justice played pretty well and the Slovenian couldn’t react! 3-0 with partial 11/5 , 11/7 and 11/ 4 in little more than 43 minutes ! In the match between the French’s , we had an authentic battle 1h31m with seeded No. 2 Bouquet being defeated by 3-2 with partial 12/10 , 3/11 , 9/11 , 11 /9 and 11/7 ! Starting with long moments simply electrifying and they give everything to win! This time the left-hander Lezaud won and quite honestly he did everything for it!

After started the matches from 18:00 H ! Yann Perrin V James Earles that English won 3-0 with a close result - 14/16 , 10 /12 and 6/11 ! Perrin tried his best in the first two games counter the English, but James actually managed to blend with some luck in the end the first two games in their favor !

Then it was just starting to leave the French discouraged and starting 46 minutes were enough for James settling the question in your favor ! The other match was between Lukas Burkhart V Alex Ingham that Alex won quickly in just over 38 minutes a clear 3-0 with partial 7/11 , 4 /11 and 3/11 ! In this game, certainly the most unbalanced of the night, the Swiss never managed to counter the English ! Another clash with only one direction!

At 1900 H two interesting matches! The first, two Swiss players fighting for a place in the quarter - Reiko Patrick V Peter Miescher! They play and train together often! Reiko in the first game had to thwart a restless Patrick strongly attacked the front of the court! Always more carefully Reiko eventually brings the pace and won the match in little more than 40 minutes without allow any Patrick reaction. The 3-0 with partial 11/8 , 11 /4 and 11/6 show that the strategy of tiring Patrrick in the first game resulted in perfection!

In another court a clashed English Chris Fuller and Belgian Jan Van Der Herrewegen . Chris won 3-1 in 50 minutes with partial 7/11, 11/6, 11 /7 and 11/7! Jan managed to get well and determined. Although Chris try to counteract this entry blazing the Jan went on to win ! Then a change of strategy and seeing Jan run continuously against the reality he wanted! Chris imposed or accelerated rhythms or after paused game until her comfort zone and was efficiency ! Effective strategy to leave Jan out of combat !

Finally came the match of the night ! Claudio at 20:00 H was already prepared to enter in the court 3 of Monte Aventino and be supported by a human frame very interesting! House bursting to provide a fantastic environment! Everyone knew that Claudio faced just the first seeded and No. 81 in the World the English Ben Colemam! But everyone was there to help with incentives and do an extra encouragement!

Claudio withstood the early rallies but in the first and second game , Ben always attacked very effectively ! Some errors and huge experience of Ben in this circuit well dug in just over 15 minutes two clear 4/11 . Then came a Cláudio more daring and more willing to not let it end the match ! He always kept good concentration and reached the desired risky but 9/9 to the delight of the audience!

Through some refereeing decisions less sympathetic to our ostes led to reality even good to see Claudio from one point to not even comment on the decisions and leave this to the public! But it was also for this reason that momentarily Ben for the first time made some unforced errors in a row! Both players fight hard in the two long last rallies but Ben worked well and ensures the 11/9 final!

Was completed so the presence of the Portuguese players in PORTO CUP PSA
2013!

Notwithstanding this great match in court 3 , the court 2 held almost simultaneously the final 20:00H match with Alex Garbi and Ashley Davies . Garbi defeated the only English the night by 3-0 with partial 11/7 , 11 /9 and 11/5 ! It took only 39 minutes and Alex got the issue in his favor ! Ashley tried to counter the second game, but it was not possible. In the third and final game of the day on the Monte Aventino , Alex came with everything and Ashley confessed that she felt suffocated .

20-Nov, Day TWO
Qualifying complete in Porto
Paulo Pinto reports

Another day with house well composed and assistance to vibrate with the matches witnessed! Yesterday some squash lovers stayed with the idea that some clashes today would be simplified by theoretically stronger players, but many ended up surprised!

At 19:00 H began the clash between Ashley and Marc . Some thought in advance that Ashley had a easily match ... but this was not so! Marc has improved several aspects of concentration and tactics in this match and kept improve today! It took a certain Ashley and courage to thwart the intentions of Marc and put the Dutch out of combat!

In another court, another battle was fought between Jakob and Patrick ! In the end, the review of swiss for me was ... " ... but I got lucky ... and do not even know how!". More a case of a match that fight and inversion result was to happen!

In the second set of matches at 20:00 H, I got tired of listening to Jõao Caiano to ask some friends and squash lovers ... "So do you steel think that Phillipe don’t play well? ? " Of course he was absolutely right because Bull gave really a lot of work Ollie to Holland to finish the match ! Were it not for the tenacity of Ollie and the outcome of the game if it was the fifth game, might not be what eventually happened !

In another match of this set The Belgian Jan , had to sweat a lot and work applied to eliminate the complicated Israeli ! Daniel won the first game and did much to win the second , but there appeared to be a savvy that Jan was gradually taking water to his mill ! Determined, patient and concentrated, was enduring all the attacks of Daniel and so ensured a tasty victory!

So tomorrow we will have a full day in the courts of the Monte Aventino because from 17:00 H to 20:00 H we have a set of two games ! I believe that the first three hours is a reasonable intermediate position between the courts number 2 and 3 but then at 20:00 H would literally tip over the house towards the court where play Claudio !

We know the task will not be easy, but I believe a inspired Claudio, focused and courageous can provide good moments to watch our squash !

Just ask everyone that tomorrow do not forget to attend to Monte Aventino !

All to the Monte Aventino to watch the first day of the Main Draw PORT PSA CUP 2013!

19-Nov, Day ONE
Qualifying under way in Porto
Paulo Pinto reports

The five Portuguese who played the first round of qualifying PORTO CUP PSA 2013 were defeated - only João Caiano escaped!

At 17:00 H Tomás Silva faced the Austrian Jacob Dimberger ! Was defeated by 3-0 with partial 4/11 , 3 /11 and 3/11 ! It was a game for which quite honestly seemed that Thomas was not prepared! We know of the great experience of Jacob , but from what we have seen lately of Thomas , quite honestly was a little less than expected !

There has even mentioned the good moments of squash but in reality Thomas eventually arrested easy for Jacob ! On Court 2 fought each other in the same time the British Juliam Tomlinson and Ollie Holland ! Also in this match Juliam was defeated 3-0 by Ollie with partial 6/11 , 7 /11 and 3/11 ! In the first two games Ollie hardly attacked and waited for a mistake in Juliam but in the third game , attacked him and quickly left Juliam out off Tournament !

Then at 18:00 H two more matches ! On Court 3 Marc Tue Sluis to easily win the athlete of Gibraltar Anthony Brindle by 3-0 with partial 11/6 , 11 /5, 12/10 ! Match that Marc controlled and at the right time, knew all turn in his favor ! On court 2 Ashley Davies also easily defeating is compatriot Nick Mulvey by 3-0 with partial 11/4 , 11 /7 and 11/4 ! Asheley start with a well-controlled attacking, in the right time and not to allow any reaction to Nick !

After the first rounds of night where Monte Aventino compose, regarding the necessary assistance ! Despite Football (Sweden V Portugal) , Rui and Pedro were presented by a well-stocked public benches and enthusiasm ! At 19:00 H Rui Soares began to face the complicated Belgian Jan Van Den Herrewegen ! Jan wan by 3-0 with partial 11/6 , 12 /10 and 11/7 ! He was much more effective in the first game !

Rui tried to counter the offensive power of the Belgian but in reality in the first game was not successful! In the second game , and has tried everything to balance the game but Jan again made the result in your favor ! Then came the most experience of Jan on the professional circuit ! Managed to take the pressure off him and put Rui running in all directions! Fight and determination found themselves on both sides , but today Jan was better and won ! At the same time , Pedro Pinto faced and was defeated by Israeli Daniel Poleshchuk by 3-0 with a triple 11/4 ! It seemed here that Peter was not in the game simply ! Daniel has mastered the whole match and do not allowed any reaction to Pedro!

Finally at 20:00 H two more matches with two Portuguese on court ! And was saved for last " batch " , winning the only game of the night !

João Caiano was defeated by the English Phillip John Bull but by honorable result of 3-1 with partial 11/8 , 11/6 , 10 /12 and 10/12 ! In this match we saw a João that believe that he could do something different.

On the 3th João start to believe and won the game by 12/10. In the 4th he returned to dominate the game but in the final moments , was already notorious fatigue and was defeated by hard fought 10/12 ! In another court , Diogo Mendes was defeated by the Swiss Patrick Miescher also by 3-0 with partial 11/1 , 11 /9 and 11/6 ! Another match in which it was known the need of Diogo to adapt to this reality. We just sow a confident Patrick that not allowed Diogo back into is game!

So thank Tomás , Pedro , Rui ,Diogo and João for the performance and for your courage and thank you to all who have showed your affection for Squash and were at the Monte Aventino during the day !

Tomorrow the tournament continues with the final stage of qualification Draw. Then we immediately proceed to draw the remaining matches of the Main Draw.

More news from Portugal

We can't finish without making reference to the following!

We are Portuguese, we are a country of football and we love our selection (which is of course congratulations - Brilliant 3-2 victory in Sweden !)

... But we were fantastic in supporting the Portuguese “almost anonymous " who devoted themselves brilliantly today to fight for our colors also in our squash!
