News from Portugal                             Paulo Pinto reports

DECEMBER 2012

3rd December 2012

Hello to All,

Claudio Pinto is the new Senior National Champion of Portugal! Won the final of the 2012 National Championship against Rui Soares by 3-2 10/12, 11/8, 10/12, 12/10 and 11/5. Teresa Quelhas becomes twice National Champion defeating in the final by 3-2 the junior Catarina Nunes!

It was a Sunday full of matches with high quality in which some final results was unpredictable. Rui and Claudio wan by 3-1 in the semi-final (André Lima and Pedro Pinto) respectively but made clear to all that they would fight until their physical limits in the final!

Before the finals still saw several matches quite interesting! In one of them Pedro Pinto secured the last spot on the podium beating André Lima and Marco Alves beat Carlos Mendes completing the Top 5 of the this National.

In the men final, we were once again presented with a fantastic spectacle. Emotion permanent rallies breathtaking and total energy. The first four games were very level and both players had the chance to win! Finally in the fifth game, Claudio physically better and with more determination, early advantage and won the game despite having been interrupted by a violent cramp in Rui right arm.

Claudio didn’t lose his focus and won by 11/5. Secured with this victory the so desired National Champion Senior Title and closes the 2012 Portuguese competition year with a golden key!

As for the women's final Teresa Quelhas start strong and quickly took the lead by winning the first two games. Then there was a real turnaround and Catarina win the next two games.

In the fifth game, despite some initial balance was notorious in the Teresa 8/5 that Catarina lose her control. No more returned on the game and Teresa course ended the match. Teresa is already veteran, which mad more value with the twice Champion National title!

In conclusion I say to all that in this 2012 National Championship in Porto was special because Claudio Pinto with 16 years old become the new National Senior Champion and made this week-end just one more very special!

Claudio confirmed also his ninth consecutive month at nº1 (1 #) World Ranking U17 of the European Squash Federation and climbing 74 positions in the professional PSA ranking ensures position 356 with the conquest of the 25 points of the PSA Closes from Malmo and Brussels !

I also have to highlight the words of Dr. Bruno Dias (President of the National Squash Federation) to the fact we had on the podium three mens athletes of 19, 17 and 16 years old (Rui, Pedro and Claudio) and in the ladies two with the ages of 18 and 14 (Sara and Catarina). This “mirrors” what actually is the work of the Federation, coaches and parents in Portugal. For sure the future is secured!

It's all of the city of Porto, a hug

NOVEMBER 2012

30-Nov-2012

Hello to All

Rui Soares was the winner of the Final Squash Open 2012 and by consequence is automatically the winner of the 2012 ranking of the National Federation of Squash! Rui beat in the final Claudio by 3-2 with the score of 11/9, 11/6, 11/13, 6/11 and 7/11!

Catarina Nunes won the Women’s draw and is automatically the winner of the 2012 Women’s ranking! Catarina defeated Sara Neves in the final by 3-1!

The men's final was brutal. Both athletes fought very hard, refusing to give up, and made their bodies and minds pass to limits that were beyond imaginable!

A strong moment in the 3rd game where after 40 minutes of play, Claudio nullifying a Rui game ball, still had a match ball, but the tenacity of Rui, managed not only to annul the same but also ensuring to win in the remaining games!

This was the key to “everything”, Rui's experience prevailed Claudio's youth. Such facts are not truly allowed Claudio to return to discuss the remaining games! So congratulations to Rui that recapture the title of the # 1 national from Claudio!

As for the women's final, though Sara in the 3rd game surprise Catarina with a perfect attack strategy, Catarina play well and won! She ensures with 14 years old the tasty title of 2012 # 1 of the Women’s National Senior Circuit! Catarina thus becomes the first athlete at this age to obtain this feat!

In conclusion I can tell you that this tournament was fantastic, with a fantastic atmosphere!

Least but not last, congratulation to the winners of this Final Squash Open 2012, the new winners of the 2012 senior national circuits Rui Soares and Catarina Nunes!

It's all in the city of Porto, a hug

Claudio Pinto and Sara Neves in U19 and Jorge Monteiro and Catarina Nunes are the new 2012 PORTUGUESE CHAMPIONS!

As it was to be expected, the first two seeds of each draw naturally ended up being the finalists, despite in some cases having to struggle mightily to reach the final (Highlight to the semifinal of U19 male in which Tomás Silva faced and defeated by 3-2 Afonso Silva)!

So within U15 boys Jorge Monteiro faced and defeated Sebastian Ferreira 3-0! In the girls draw Catarina Nunes faced and defeated Rita Quintas also 3-0!

As part of the U19, Claudio Pinto defeated Tomas Silva by 3-0 with partial 11/9, 14/12 and 11/6. The Girls Draw Sara Neves faced and defeated Alexandra Santos by 3-1.

As mentioned these Nationals were fairly crowded and the Complexo Desportivo de Espinho was very lively with good matches with an exemplar Fair-Play model and a public affluence also remarkable.

For some of these athletes was undoubtedly a good occasion to prepare for the last senior national tournament of the 2012 circuit which will take place next week-end at Solinca Dragon in Porto!

It's all from Espinho, a hug to all

CLAUDIO WINS IN BELGIUM

Claudio Pinto is the new Champion of the Belgian Junior Open 2012 in the U19 Draw and won the PSA Close of this tournament!
Won in the final match the French Baptiste Masotti by 3-1 with partial 11/8, 7/11, 11/5 and 15/13!

Great match of Squash and more a huge achievement for the Portuguese Junior Squash.

Believe me it is fantastic for Claudio has secured this victory but is sensational have got this done in is second U19 tournament! As a corollary of all this reality I must also point out that Claudio thus becomes the first Portuguese to win a PSA tournament at only 16 years old!

At the prize-giving ceremony in his speech, he did not forget to thank the Belgian Organisation and the European Federation circuit in the presence of the European President, the natural gratitude to National Squash Federation, the performance of your friend and opponent Batiste Masotti in the final, to his Main-sponsor HEAD, the other sponsors, ESP technical team, friends and family!

It was a great day for Claudio but believe me it was another great day for the Portuguese Squash! There are fabulous ways to write golden pages in our book of memories, but quite honestly this was fantastic!

Congratulations to Claudio, the Portuguese and to you Paulo for being a dedicated father, coach and supporter of squash throughout the world.

The Ripka's have been there for many years watching Claudio work and grow into the champion he is. We knew it was coming !

MAY 2012

30 mai 2012

Claudio Pinto and Catarina Nunes in U17 and Simão Neves in U13 are the 2012 National Champions!

Claudio (after beating in semis Jorge Cabral 3-0) defeated in the final his friend Tomas Silva (after beating in semis Alfonso Silva 3-0) by 3-1 in an interesting and well played match.

The first two seeding’s went to the final without losing a game. With the victory in the final Claudio gets the title of U17 National Champion back and becomes Twice Champion.

As to the girls U17 Draw, the winner was Catarina Nunes. The Draw was played in a Pool and until the last match Catarina and Alexandra Santos had the possibility of obtaining the title. Catherine was stronger and more determined in the match between these players and obtained the victory.

In the U13 Draw, in all matches the dispute was hard fought. In the final Simão Neves defeated Jose Miguel Silva by 3-0. Despite that result, the last two games were very interesting and Simão had to really fight to ensure the result stated. With the final victory Simão secured the U13 title and become Twice champion!

The National ran without any problem and to highlight the presence of “new junior” athletes at all Draws and also a considerable flow of visitors throughout the day. Certainly all contribute decisively to the “growth” of the National Squash.

I do not end here while my congratulations to Claudio, Catarina and Simão.

It’s all for the Oporto City

SEPTEMBER 2011

12th International Tournament of Madeira
Hello to All

Yesterday finished the 2011 edition of Madeira International Squash Tournament with the victory in the Men's Draw of Spaniard Carlos Cornes vs German Carsten Schoor by 3-0. In the Ladiies Draw the winner was Susana Do Valle that also by 3-0 beat Lucia Neves.

It was a long day and very competitive.

In the morning in the semi-finals, Carlos beat his compatriot Hugo Varela by 3-0 and for the same result was defeated Claudio Pinto who faced the German Carsten.

In the afternoon in the men's final, Carlos Cornes got a permanent domination. It was very evident the supremacy of the Spaniard.
As for the women's final, the situation was similar. Susana won easily Lucia and secured like as Carlos Cornes in all matches a winning period without “giving” any game to them opponents.

Highlight was the match that gave the 3rd place on the podium that it was conquered by the Spaniard Hugo Varela. Hugo faced Claudio Pinto and the final 3-2 shows the difficult that the Spaniard passed.

The remaining Draws, the winner of the male plate was Luis Ferreira. The Women plate the winner was Claudia Santos.

At the end of this long day, there was the usual Awards ceremony. All the parties (organizers and winners), properly appreciated the excellent organization and location and it was mention that may actually be the launching for the 2012 edition this event becomes a PSA tournament and perhaps also WISPA.

In conclusion, I tell you that as a judge-referee of this Tournament, the performance of athletes and referees was exemplary. In competitive terms, the level was actually quite high, due to the presence of internationals players and also the commitment of all playing well in their matches.

Do not finish without thanking the organizers (Milton, Ricardo Sousa, Ricardo Sardinha, Oscar Pereira and other organizers) the invitation was addressed to me.

June:
This Saturday finished the National Championship U13 and U17and the first 2011 titles were awarded!

The Champions U13 are Rita Neves and Simão Neves!
The U17 Champions are Sara Neves and Cláudio Pinto!

The tournament was held with a total fair play and was notorious in the growth of female quality.

The U13 final was with Simão Neves and Carlos Silva who was defeated by 3-2 with partials of 10/12, 10/12, 11 / 6, 11 / 3 and 9 / 11. Very closely fought battle to be won by Simon with only 9 years old! This athlete certainly can be improved and work will make him a more complete athlete!

As for the women's final, won by Rita Quintas lack of opposition!

The U17 Ladies Final was with Sara Neves and Catarina Nunes. Sara won by 3-2 with partial 11 / 6, 3 / 11, 8 / 11, 11 / 7 and 11 / 7. Hard fought match to once again Sara make a difference in maturity comparing the 13 years of Catherine. Both athletes presented us with gifts rallies quantity and quality of shots, unusual in the women tournaments in the Portugal. As rightly said Dr. Paulo Silva (Vice-Chairman of the National Squash Federation), we witnessed the growth of this athletes and today we were presented with superior play squash!

Finally in the Men's U17 final, clashed Claudio Pinto and Pedro Pinto. Cláudio won by 3-1 with partials of 11 / 4, 3 / 11, 11 / 7 and 11 / 3. It was a match in which the influence is denoted on the two athletes from the fact that Claudius to have featured in this national with a broken finger!

These two athletes above the natural rivalry and competition sports are friends and as such the fact that conditioned both!

In the case of Claudius, had to do everything to mentally overcome the pain in the finger (which would be supplemented with increasing physical intensity, number of rallies and a consequent increase in heart rate!)? It was indeed a sacrifice, only offset by the fact that it concerned a dispute over a National Title.

As for Peter, the first games were fought hard and push him enough to equalize 1 equal. After it became known that sometimes feared force physical contact!

Not finish without mentioning the words of Claudio Pinto in which he thanked the National Squash Federation organization and the excellent care of the National Junior Squash and also the performance of athletes!

May: Bairrada Open

Finished this Sunday the Bairrada Squash Open 2011 (Fifth Senior Tournament of the National Squash Federation) with the victory of the Cláudio Pinto and Sara Neves.

Cláudio won Rui Saores by 3-2 with partial 11 / 9, 10/12, 9 / 11, 11 / 7 and 11 / 6.

Hard fought match, with blistering rallies and a total commitment, of these great national juniors’ athletes.

Cláudio advocates and thereby reinforces the leadership of the National Ranking arising there from to manage a comfortable lead over the next few national tournaments.

It was a tournament which confirmed the first four positions, the current top four in National Ranking 2011.

Regarding the Male Table, as stated Sara Neves won 3-2 by Catarina Nunes. Also a hard fought match, with Sara in the final moments of the last 3 games to assert his greater experience and will also show to Catarina that she wanted to win at home!

It was a very nice tournament, with great atmosphere and an enviable audience, in the finals.

Do not end this chronicle without mentioning Claudio thanks to sponsors, friends, family and coaches which are the key to your success.

May: Portugal U17's in the quarterfinals
of the European Germering - Germany!

Secured the 2nd position in the tough Group C and away the favorite France!

This double journey began soon by 09:00 am with the selection of Italy.

Cláudio Pinto won the match against Oliviero ventricosa 3-2 with partial 10:12, 10:12, 11:9, 11:5, 11:4. It was a difficult match, but the claw of Claudius in the final moments of the last three games were decisive.

Pedro Pinto faced Yuri Farneti and won 3-1 with partial 7:11, 11:4, 11:6, 11:6. The first game was complicated but after Pedro was able to control the match.

As for Sara Neves faced and was defeated by 3-0 by Benedetta Buccal with partial 10:12, 9:11, 10:12. Balanced match but in a bit of luck that was asked for the final moments of games.

Then came at 13:15 pm the most difficult and decisive confrontation with the French National team.

Firts Claudio Pinto V Masotti Baptiste who won by 3-2 with partial 8:11, 11:5, 11:9, 7:11, 8:11. It was a tough battle, but Claudio was alerted and prepared to fight! He knew that much depended on the final outcome of this result. Baptiste was not frightened in the first game and managed to turn the match in his favor. In the fourth and fifth game, Claudio fought bravely and well secured instability in French Team.

Then enter Pedro Pinto, who faced and "settled bills" with Auguste Dusourd. Won 3-0 with partial 9:11, 8:11, 8:11 and so made it clear that the result between them in the French-2011 was actually an accident.

Finally played Sara Neves who faced the Oxana Ah-Hu leaving with a 3-0 defeat partial 11:2, 11:3, 11:2. Sarah really could not do anything because the French is now better.

After waiting for desperate confrontation between Switzerland and the selection of French National team.

Fortunately everything went as planned and the Swiss won 2-1.

Portugal has succeeded in the second year presence in the quarter finals and who knows, so get the best result so far. Let us have faith and believe they are prepared to do and give their best  against the Selection of Wales.
