Abdullah marches on in Kuwait
Home favourite Abdullah Al Mezayen followed up yesterday's
sensational win over second seed Daryl Selby with another five-game
win in the quarter-finals, this time over Hong Kong's Max Lee.
"Second win today in alwatan & asnan psa tournment against world
no.32 max lee from hongkong 3/2," tweeted Abdullah. "happy with my
performance now playing semis!"
Abdullah now meets seed Simon Rosner for a place in the
final, following the German fourth seed's four-game win over Alister
Walker.
Top seed Borja Golan recorded a second consecutive
straight-game win as he beat Ryan Cuskelly, but faces unexpected
opposition in the semi-final after Dutchman LJ Anjema beat

19-Dec, Round One:
Home ace Abdullah axes Selby
Home favourite Abdullah
Al Mezayen, who always performs his best at home in Kuwait, did
it again with a sensational five game win over second seed
Daryl Selby in the first round of the $50k Alwatan & Asnan
International at the Kuwaiti national squash centre.
Selby, who has just returned to the world's top ten in the December
rankings, fought back from two games down to force a decider, but
Abdullah struck again to take the fifth 11/5 to complete a famous
upset on the hour.
"Happy
2 win today against @DarylSelby best win in my career looking
forward to play max lee from hong kong in quarter," tweeted a
jubilant Abdullah.
Abdullah now faces Hong Kong's Max Lee for a place in the
semi-finals.
Selby was suitably impressed: "By the way never seen anyone hit
so many outright winners tonight and I felt I was moving well!" he
tweeted. "Dead glass court made it tough but still... well played
buddy. Good luck for the rest of the tournament."
That
was the only upset of the day, but third seed Tarek Momen had
to battle for five games to see off Joe Lee, and he now meets
Dutchman LJ Anjema.
Top seed Borja Golan beat in-form Egyptian qualifier
Fares Dessouky in four games to set up a quarter-final with Ryan
cuskelly, while Germany's fourth seeded Simon Rosner
meets Alister Walker, who also needed the full five games to
beat young Egyptian Mazen Hesham.
18-Dec, Qualifying Finals:
Kuwaitis fall on day two
Kuwait's Ali Bader Al-Ramzi
and Fallah Mohammed were unable to follow up their day one upsets as
both home favourites fell at the qualifying hurdle.
Al-Ramzi fought back from two games down only to see Malaysia's
Muhd Asrraf Azan take the decider after 78 minutes, while
Mohammed lost in straight games to young Jordanian Ahmad Al-Saraj.
The other qualifying spots were taken by Egyptians, in-form Fares
Dessouky - who drew top seed Borja Golan in the main draw - and
the highest remaining qualifying seed Omar Abdel Aziz.
17-Dec, Qualifying Round One:
Top seeds fall to Kuwaitis on day one
While four home players failed to progress on the opening day of the
Alwatan and Asnan tournament in Kuwait, it was a good day for Ali
Bader Al-Ramzi and Fallah Mohammed as the two Kuwaitis
recorded upset wins over the top two seeds Ali Anwar Reda and Leo Au
in the qualifying competition.
Qatar's Abdulla Al Tamimi made it a bad day for the high
seeds as he overcame Shaun Le Roux, the third seed, in five games.
Also upsetting the seedings in their bid to qualify for the last PSA
International event of the year were Egypt's Fares Dessouky
and Jordan's Ahmad Al-Saraj.
