Dunlop Pontefract Junior Open 2013
27-30 Dec, Pontefract

Malaysians dominate in Pontefract

The first half of the Dunlop Pontefract Junior Open Championships, consisting of the Under 13 and Under 15 age groups provided a clean sweep for the Malaysians.

Their impressive quartet were Ong Sai Hung U15 Boys), 12 year old Aifa Azman (U15 Girls), Mohammed Hafiz (U13 Boys) and Jessica Kheng (U13 Girls).

English resistance was provided by two locals Eliot Ridge and Sam Todd and Karina Tyma, of which 10 year old Todd did best giving Hafiz plenty to do before the Malaysian won 3-1.

The Under 13 Girls was all Malaysian, Amirah Rusdina taking the runner up spot. There was much quality on show and no doubt some of thr winners will make an impression at the forthcoming British Junior Open.

Malaysia's outstanding young players completed a magnificent eight out of eight at the Pontefract Junior Open, when on the second finals day they won all the four older age group titles.

The Under 19 matches provided a fitting climax, both finals going the full distance. The all Malaysian Girls final went to Sivasangari, but there was little in it throughout.

Pontefract's Jack Cooper was the last hope of breaking the Malaysian dominance and after a quality performance in the semi final when he beat Connor Sheen, he began the final in similar style, winning the first game. He went 2-1 down, however, but recovered to level the score at 2 all, contested all the way in the fifth before Syafiq squeezed home.

It will be interesting to see how the talented Malaysians fare against the might of the Egyptian juniors in Sheffield. Terry Dudley and his team ran the event with the efficiency and smoothness associated with Pontefract's vastly experienced tournament organiser
