Finals day at Edgbaston Priory Club
Mike Edwards reports

After two fantastic days of squash at Birmingham University and Edgbaston Priory Club, Edgbaston saw the top 16 players from each age group battling it out for their final positions.

Throughout the morning the playoff matches saw some very tense, exhausting and emotional matches going with the seeding’s and on a number of occasions, against them.

Putting the players to one side for the moment, credit must also be given to all the parents, coaches and supporters for the help in providing such an amazing atmosphere throughout the weekend... and what a weekend it proved to be! A grand total of 452 matches were played in this year’s National Junior Championships.

Moving onto the business end of the day... The Finals!

The Boys under 13’s final saw No.1 seed Sam Todd taking on the No.2 seed of Adam Goad.

Listening to the roar coming from the spectators, you would have been forgiven for thinking an U19’s title was up for grabs but no, under 13’s boys. Adam and Sam exchanged games throughout their match running themselves to near exhaustion. In the fifth game with both players drawing on all their reserves and the audience moving with every shot, Adam just managed to squeeze Sam out 119 and took the boys under 13 title.

Next to this we had Lydia Robinson (No.2) up against Katie Malliff (No.3) playing in the Girls under 13’s final. After 26 mins and 5 nail-biting games Lydia proved too strong for Katie taking the 5th game 114 along with the national title.

U13 Finalists

The boys under 15’s final saw the familiar face of Jared Carter (No.1) playing against Oscar Beach (No.2). The score doesn’t do Oscar any justice with him matching Jared rally for rally but alas not point for point. Jared proved to be too strong and after 26 mins won the match and title 117, 114, 114.

For the Girls under 15’s we had Laura Neill (No.4) pitting her wits against Alice Green (No.3). A valiant effort from Laura but sadly not enough, Alice proved too strong winning 3 straight games 113, 119 and 118 and the Girls under 15 crown.

U15 Finalists

We then had the under 17s Boys final with two of the 5/8 seeds of Charlie Lee and Robbie Keefe playing for the top honours. This final lasted 41 mins and saw Charlie winning 30 against a gallant effort from Robbie...sadly pipped at the post for a second year.

Last year’s Girls under 15’s final saw Jasmin Hutton beating Lucy Turmel however this year can Jasmin repeat her heroics against Lucy? It was Lucy this year who turned the tables on last years result and in 31 minutes won the girls under 17’s crown 30.

U17 Finalists

To close the weekend Patrick Rooney (No.1) was playing against Bradley Masters (No.4) for the Boys Under 19’s Final. This final actually went with the seedings and Patrick proved to be too strong for Bradley winning 119, 118, 1113, 115 in 42 minutes and picking up the under 19s national title.

Close by was the Girls under 19’s with top seed Georgia Kennedy playing 3rd seed Amelia Henley, a repeat of last years under 17’s final which saw Georgina taking the honours.

This year Georgina didn’t have things all her own way. Amelia only just lost the first 2 games 1210, came back and won the third game 611, exchanged point for point with Georgina until 88 in the 4th game but once again Georgina pushed hard to complete the game 118 winning the final 31 in 42 mins and pick up the National under 19’s title to place next to her 17’s title.
