U15/U19 at Surrey Sports Park

The Finals got underway at Surrey Sports Park with the Boys U15 Final, an all Sussex clash between the top 2 seeds Tom Walsh and Curtis Malik. Malik started well and got off to an early lead with a run of 5 points to take a 7-3 lead, Walsh was unable to get a foothold in the game and Malik closed it 11-7. The same format repeated itself over the next two games, Malik going on a good run and being able to close the games out at the business end. A 3-0 victory in just under 30 minutes saw Malik claim his second English Title.

The Girls Under 5 final was a really good battle between the top seeds, a match that swung both ways. Turmel took the early advantage in a close fought game only for Hutton to claim the second with the same 11-8 scoreline as the first. Hutton started the 3rd well and found herself 9-6 up, but Turmel dug in and had match ball at 10-9 but couldnt take it, Hutton took the next 2 points to claim the game 12-10. The 4th saw both girls match each other until 3-3 when Turmel went on a 6 point run, at 9-3 she was too far ahead for Hutton to catch up as she levelled the match 2-2. The 5th was as you would expect in a final, very tight with neither player letting the other get too far ahead, at 9-9 it was tough to call who would go onto win but it was Hutton who found that little extra to get herself over the line, 11-9 and Champion.

The Girls U19 was also contested between the top 2 seeds, Elkalaawy got off to an amazing start and took an 8-1 lead, Taylor slowly battled back to 7-10 but couldnt quite get to a tie break, Elkalaawy holding firm to take the first. Taylor found her feet in the second but Elkalaawy always managed to stay a point or two ahead to claim the game 11-8 and go into the 3rd in a great position. Once again Elkalaawy managed to get a couple of points lead and managed to keep that until Taylor levelled at 9-9, a no let gave Elkalaawy a massive advantage and match ball which she took to claim her first English title.

The BU19 final was a true battle between Richie Fallows and George Parker which lasted a mammoth 81 minutes and went to 5. Both players very strong, attacking well, retrieving well and full of fight. Fallows took the early advantage only for Parker to level the games 1 a piece. Parkers form continued in the 3rd and tooka great 7-3 lead only for Fallows to slowly get back into it and force a tie break but Parker stayed focused and took it 12-10. Fallows reacted and got off to a better start in the 4th game, 5-2, 6-4, 8-5 until finally 11-5 to take it into the 5th. Another great start for Fallows gave him a great advantage, 5-1 up and a couple of strokes made it 7-2, from there on he was just too strong and he had the momentum to close the game out 11-3 and take the title.

Saturday at Surrey Sports Park

A busy day at Surrey Sports Park today as we got through the Quarters and the Semi’s. The Boys Under 15 Quarter Finals saw all top 4 seeds progress through, Elliot Ridge being the only one who was pushed to a 5 set game by Michael Mattimore.

The top seed, Tom Walsh had his work cut out for him in the semi finals as he was pushed all the way by Nicholas Wall. Wall had his chance in the 4th as the game got taken to a tie break but he couldn’t capitalise and Walsh took the game 12-10 and went on to take the 5th 11-5 in 52 minutes. He will face Curtis Malik in the Final who got the better of Elliot Ridge in their Semi Final. Malik took the first two games 11-8 11-8 with Ridge taking the 3rd 11-4 but couldn’t keep the pressure up as Malik moved into the final with a 3-1 victory.

Karina Tyma and Carys Jones had a great battle in the Girls Under 15 Quarter Finals, Tyma took the match 3-0 but had to fight hard to get it, taking the first 11-9 and the second 17-15. The 3rd game wasn’t as intense and Tyma took it 11-4 to set up a Semi Final clash with top seed Jasmine Hutton who had previously beat surprise quarter finalist 9/16 seed Gabriella Mawson 3-0. Tyma managed to give Hutton her hardest game so far, taking the second into a tie break and pushing her close in the 3rd but was unable to stop the favourite from recording a 3-0 victory.

Hutton now faces the 2nd seed Lucy Turmel in the final. Turmel came through her QF against Ellen Cooper to set up a semi final with Rawan Elkalaawy who had beaten the unseeded Josie Barker. Turmel started the match strong taking a 2-0 lead, ElKalaawy fought back taking the 3rd and almost clinched the 4th but Turmel kept her head when the game went into a tie break and took it 13-11 to reach the final.

Nada Elkalaawy breezed into the final after a comprehensive couple of 3-0 victories. The first to test the top seed was Lydia Hume in the Quarters and then followed by Jessica Davis in the semi’s after she had knocked out Kip Quiney. Davis didn’t get off to a great start, Elkalaawy took the first 11-1. Davis put up more of a fight in the 2nd and 3rd but was unable to impose her game, 3-0 to Elkalaawy in 22 minutes.

Nada will now face Lily Taylor in the final as she had a similar route through with two 3-0 victories. Ellie Lake was her QF opponent and gave her a tough first game which Taylor took 11-9 but she came back onto court refocused and quickly took the next two games 11-3, 11-2.

She then faced Surrey’s Alison Thomson in the SF, Thomson competed well in the early stages of each game but midway through each it was Taylor who pushed on and took a run of 5 or 6 points to close them out comfortably, winning 11-6, 11-6, 11-4 in 32 minutes.

The Boyes Under 19 Quarter Finals were very straight forward with the top 4 seeds wasting no time in booking their semi final places. Fallows, Fuller, Parker and Gillams all recording 3-0 wins in less than 40 minutes. Fuller took on top seed Fallows in the first semi final of the evening and after going 1-0 down took the second 11-4 to level it up.

The 3rd was close but Fallows closed out the game 11-8 and the 4th went to a tie break, at 10 all Fallows took the advantage then won the match on a stroke as a return from Fuller came straight back down the middle of the court. 3-1 to Fallows in 60 minutes.

As is tradition at these events, the last match on was the longest of the event so far with George Parker taking on the current British U19 champion Angus Gillams. 98 minutes and 14-12 in the fifth! Parker took the first only for Gillams to battle back to take the 2nd and 3rd.

You would think that Gillams would have the advantage going into the 4th but it was Parker who at 2-2 went on to claim each point in succession until he levelled the match at 2-2. Into the 5th then and Gillams soon made it clear it wasn’t going to be an easy game, both players fighting for space and giving the ref decisions to make early on.

The players matched each other point for point until it went to a tie breaker, Gillams had the first match ball but was unable to take it then at 12-12 Parker stepped up and took the next two rallies to book his final spot against Fallows.

Preview from Paul Houghton

The Tecnifibre English Junior Championships returns to Surrey this weekend where the nation’s best young squash players will fight to become an English Champion.

Winchester Racquets & Fitness Club will host all Under 13 and Under 17 matches while the Under 15 and Under 19 matches will be played at Surrey Sports Park.

250 players will be(action from 21-23 March, each one competing for the right to be named England’s best.

Richie Fallows (Essex) will head into the BU19 event as top seed and favourite as he looks to claim his 3rd English title, he is likely to come against 2nd seed Angus Gillams (Hertfordshire)(the final which would be a repeat of the British Championship final which Gillams won back(November. George Parker (Leicestershire) and Lyell Fuller (Devon) are the 3/4 seeds who will hope to cause an upset.

Nada El Kalaawy
(Surrey) will be looking to claim her first national title(the GU19 event, she will likely meet last year’s U17 champion Lily Taylor (Leicestershire)(the final.

James Peach (Yorkshire) will be aiming to claim a national double this year as he comes into the BU17 event as reigning British U17 champion, Peach has never won an English title and will have his work cut out for him this time round as he is seeded to meet 4 time winner and current English U17 champion Patrick Rooney (Merseyside).

The GU17 event is seeded to be an all Kent clash between top seeds Georgina Kennedy and Amelia Henley. The girls contested the British U17 final with Henley taking the title, as Kennedy looks for revenge and Henley looking for a national double the U17 categories looks like they will produce some exciting clashes.

Elise Lazarus (Essex) was hot favourite to continue her domination(the junior ranks but has been forced to withdraw through injury, so top seeds Jasmine Hutton (Sussex) and Lucy Turmel (Suffolk) have a great chance to claim their first national title.

The boys have given us great finals(the last two years with the British final lasting 77 minutes, hoping to break up this pair is Gloucestershire’s Nathan Mead and Kent’s Jack Mitterer.

Eve Coxon
(Oxfordshire) tops the seeding(the GU13 event but will face stiff competition from reigning British champion Alice Green (Essex), neither girl has an English title to their name so this looks to be hotly contested.
