Seven top seeds take
English Junior titles in Surrey

After three days of action at Surrey Sports Park and Colets, the seeding committee went home happy as seven of the eight top seeds claimed the title at the Tecnifibre English Junior Open, and the one to lose only did so 12/10 in the fifth!

At SSP:

GU15 Final:

Kace Bartley continued were she left off in the semi finals playing some great squash and raced to a 7-1 lead in the first game however Georgina Kennedy soon got to grips with the game and took 10 points on the trot to win the first 11-7.

In the second Bartley started strongly again but could not maintain the intensity throughout and lost the second 11-5. Kennedy was ready to seize her opportunity of glory in the third and reached 8-2 within minutes before Bartley fought back to 9-8 only for Kennedy to take the next 2 points and add the U15 title to her U13 title.

GU19 Final:
The girls under 19 final was a repeat of last years under 17 final and had the same outcome. Victoria Temple-Murray was dominant throughout and never gave Chloe Pearson the opportunity to get in to the game. Murray’s hard hitting and fast pace was to much for Pearson to handle as Murray Claimed the GU19 title.

BU15 Final:
The boys under 15 final was certainly one to remember. Nothing could separate the two players as the first game went to a tie break before James Peach took the game 12-10. After Peach went 4-1 up in the second it looked like the match was only going to go one way however Patrick Rooney fought back to win the next 8 points to go 9-4 up and then win the game to find a way back in the game taking the second 1-1.

Peach went in front again taking the third 11-9 and Rooney ensured the match would going the distance taking the fourth 11-7 levelling the match 2-2. A determined Rooney fighting to add the U15 title to his U13 title came out strong in the last game taking a 4-0 lead and never let it slip getting to matchball 10-9.

Peach saved one matchball taking the match to another tie break but Rooney stood strong winning the 5th 12-10 and the match 3-2 to be crowned Under 15 English Junior Champion.

BU19 Final:
The boys under 19 final was a one sided affair. Defending champion Declan James controlled the game from the start and Oliver Holland never looked like he was going to win the final. Holland managed to keep the pace with James at 7-7 in the first however James showed his class by winning the next 5 points winning the first 11-7.

In the second and third James was just too good for Holland winning 11-3 & 11-4 to claim the title of Boys Under 19 English Junior Champion.

At Colets:

Top seed Elise Lazarus brought Rawan El Kalaawy’s fine run to an end in the final of the girls under 13 Lazarus, who did not drop a single game in the tournament beat Kalaawy 3-0 in 20 minutes.

A keenly fought boys’ under 13 final saw number 1 seed Curtis Malik beat 2nd seed Todd Bennett 3-2, Bennett leading by 2 games to 1 served for the match in the fourth game; Malik won the point and the next two to take the game 14-12. Malik was never behind in the fifth, taking it 11-6 and the title in a match lasting 43 minutes.

Alicia Mead, 3/4 seed, looked likely to take the girls under 17 final to five sets when serving at 10-5 in the fourth, but top seed Eleanor Lake had other ideas and won the next seven points to secure the title with a 3-1 win in 36 minutes.

Top seeds Richie Fallows and Lyell Fuller played a 59 minute final, Fallows taking the first two games 11-8,11-9. Fuller replied taking the third 11-8. A fourth game saw Fallows serve for the match at 10-6, Fuller came back to serve at 9-10 but Fallows won the rally to win the boys under 17 title 3-1 to the overwhelming delight of his dad.

Holland, out to avenge his defeat in the BU17 finals last year had other ideas and won the next two points to take third 11-9. In the fourth game with the points at 2-2 Ford’s effort in the first three games caught up with him as he was unable to overcome a serious bout of cramp in his legs.

Unable to move Ford conceded the 4th [*from 5-2 it looks like, Ed] to give himself a much needed 90 seconds to recover however it was just too short a time period to recover and never got going in the fifth losing it 11-3.

In the second semi final defending champion Declan James overcame the determined Taminder Gata-Aura. Gata-Aura showed right from the start he was not here to simply make up the numbers and raced to a 5-2 lead in the first and the game remained neck and neck until 9-9 before James won the game 11-9.

James played some stunning squash in the second to go 2-0. In the third James seem to take his foot of the gas to allow Gata-Aura to win the third, however James recomposed himself to win the fourth 11-7 and the match 3-1.

Friday 2nd, Day One at the EJC

SSP, U19 & U15:

Day 1 at foggy Surrey Sports Park and the English Junior Champs is under way.

The under 15 girls kicked the tournament off and the draw saw two 9/16 seeds depart in the first round. Beth Parker managed to beat Hayley Openshaw-Blower in a closely fought contest with Parker coming out on top 11-8 in the 5th. Parker's reward for winning was a second round match against Number 1 seed Georgina Kennedy. Parker seemed to have put everything in to her first round match and was unable to carry her form in to her next match as Kennedy won 3-0.

The other 9/16 seed to lose in the first round was Leanne Herbert who found Collette Whittington too much to handle losing 3-0 in 23 minutes. 3/4 seed Mari Taylor sent out a message to her fellow competitors as she made quick work of Libby Corke in the second round winning 11-4, 11-0, 11-3 in 13 minutes.

In the boys under 15 draw all seeds managed to progress through to round 2. Anthony Rogal came closest to causing an upset against 9/16 seed Joe Dale. Rogal managed to get within 2 points of a second round spot as he led 2-1 and was 10-10 in the 4th however he lost the 4th 12-10 and then the 5th 11-2.

The top 4 seeds cruised through to the second round all winning 3-0 in convincing style. 3/4 seed Robbie Keefe was pushed hardest out of the four in his 3-0 win over Ben Joyce as the second game went to 16-14, however in the third Joyce ran out of steam and Keefe took the next game 11-6 to win the match 3-0 in 32 mins.

In similar fashion to the girls under 15 the Girls under 19 saw 2 9/16 seeds fall foul. Katrina Burrows beat Emily Peach 3-1 to set up a 2nd round match against 5/8 seed Sophie Lemom.

The other 9/16 seed to get knocked out was Brogan Lane who came up against Annie Openshaw-Blower, after two closely contested games in the favour of Openshaw-Blower Lane managed to pull 1 back however the revival was short lived as Openshaw-Blower took the fourth 11-5 to win the match 3-1.

In the boys under 19 draw all seeds successfully progressed through the second round, BU17 British Junior Open runner up Ashley Davies started slowly in his first match of the tournament dropping his first game 11-9 but came back strongly to progress through to face an impressive Daniel Hockborn in the second round.

Hockborn was in remarkable form in his first round match against Gavan Hitchenor dropping only 4 points in 19 minutes to win 3-0. Number 2 seed Tom Ford was equally as impressive as he took only 13 minutes to beat Jeremy Carter 3-0.

Number 1 seed and red hot favourite Dec James won his first round 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 in 23m.

Colets, U17 & U13:

Colets opened their doors to the young eager stars this morning as the Under 13 boys and girls arrived for their first round matches.

The first round of the Boys U13 went much to plan as the majority of seeds moved through to the next round, Ben Merchant and Elliot Ridge the only unseeded players to come through after knocking out two 9/16 seeds. Unfortunately they couldn’t make their winning form last, Merchant came up against the number 1 seed Curtis Malik and could only manage to take a game from him.

Ridge came up against 5/8 seed Michael Mattimore, Mattimore had a tough 5 set match in the first round and he didn’t want a repeat of that, a 3-0 victory will see him face the 3/4 seed James Wyatt in tomorrow's Quarter Final.

The Girls Under 13’s first round started much the same, with all top seeds progressing without too much trouble, both top seeds moving through after 3-0 wins in 10 minutes. The biggest upset of the day was to follow in round 2. Rawan El Kalaawy a 9/16 seed came up against the number 2, Jasmine Hutton.

El Kalaawy meant business and secured victory in straight games, she must now be seriously considered a threat and will hope to keep her title hopes alive tomorrow. The rest of the top seeds moved through as expected.

The Boys Under 17’s saw unseeded Kyran Young cause an upset as he knocked out the 3/4 seed Joe Brooke 3-1 in the first round. His success was short lived as he was beaten by James Evans in the second round. The rest of the first round was less eventful as the all the other games went with seed.

Jack Cooper caused the only upset of the second round as the BU15 British Junior Champion knocked out 5/8 seed Russell Clark 3-1. Bradley Smith came close to an upset as he pushed 5/8 seed George Parker all the way to 5 losing 3-2.

In the Girls Under 17’s Alison Thomson had a day to remember as the unseeded player knocked out 9/16 seed Joely Bennett in the first round 3-0 and then continued her great form in the next round beating 5/8 seed Martha Possegger 3-0.

In the rest of the draw all seeds managed to progress through to the next round.

England's best head for Surrey

This weekend will see the finest junior squash players in the country travel to Surrey to compete in the Tecnifibre English Junior Championships (EJC)

This event has now established itself as a major event in the calendar, complimenting the traditional Tecnifibre British Junior Championships and the Tecnifibre British Junior Open, giving the players the opportunity to fight it out for a coveted English National title. Colets Health Club and Surrey Sports Park will host 250 players from 2-4 March for three days of fiercely competitive squash.

Declan James (Nottinghamshire) will be hoping to defend his BU19 title as he plays this competition for the last time before moving out of the juniors. Looking to stop him will be Tom Ford (Gloucestershire) the second seed who is hunting for his first National Title along with county compatriot Oliver Holland (Nottinghamshire) who is a 3/4 seed.

The Girls U19 event will see the reigning GU17 Champion Victoria Temple Murray (Devon) come into the competition as favourite, her main challenge will come from last year’s GU19 beaten finalist Katie Smith (Yorkshire) who will be hoping to go one better this time round. Samantha Ward (Northumbria) and Chloe Pearson (Warwickshire) are also in contention and will be looking to cause an upset.

The Boys U17 event will see former BU15 Champion Richie Fallows (Essex) return as hot favourite to take another title with the second seed Lyell Fuller (Devon) his main threat. Current British Girls U17 champion Ellie Lake (Gloucestershire) will be looking to consolidate her position as the best U17 player in the country as she hopes to add the EJC title to her collection, she is seeded to face last year’s GU15 EJC champion Lucy Beecroft (Northumbria) in the final.

In the Girls U15’s, the current British GU15 champion Georgina Kennedy (Kent) will also be looking to make it to the end of the season as a double champion, she will face stiff competition from Amelia Henley (Kent) who will be raring to go in this event after missing out on the British Junior Championships earlier in the season.

James Peach (Yorkshire) narrowly missed out on collecting a BJC title this season after reaching the final and will be looking to go one better in this competition, his main rival will come from Patrick Rooney (Merseyside) who has enjoyed success in this event as a previous BU13 champion.

Elise Lazarus (Essex) is favourite to claim the Girls U13 title with Jasmine Hutton (Sussex) also hoping for success while current Boys U13 BJC Champion Curtis Malik (Sussex) looks to continue his great form by collecting a first EJC title.
