Colwyn Classic 2014
27-31 Jul, Colwyn Bay, $10k |
31-Jul,
Final:
Line win over Home Girl Em...
Line Hansen 3-1 Emily
Whitlock 7-11, 11-7, 11-8, 11-5
The
final did not disappoint the expectant crowd in Rhos-on-Sea; both
players played some of their best squash to give a nail biting match
that could have gone either way.
Emily started the match extremely well playing her best squash of
the tournament so far to take the first game quite comfortably. Her
attacking play seemed to take Line by surprise and it looked as if
an upset could be on the cards for the young starlet playing at her
home club.
With the match tied at 1-1 in games and Emily 4 0 up, you could see
Line knew that the next few points would decide the match. Line
showed her class and used all her experience to start raising the
pace of her game by taking the ball earlier, and being more clinical
when in a commanding position. This won her the important third game
and then the match.
Both players showed fantastic athletism throughout the match,
showing all onlookers they are not to be messed with!
A great end to a fantastic week of world class squash in North
Wales, bring on the next event! |

27 Jul, Qualifying
Lily Taylor bt
Julianne Courtice 3 - 0 11-6 11-6 11-3
Very competitive match that Lily just edged
with some fantastic clinical winners and keeping the game to
a high
tempo,
Mari Taylor bt Roxanna Keshavarz 3 - 0 11-9 11-6 11-8
The younger of the two Taylor sisters showed she is not to
be
underestimated with an excellent victory. Roxanna was close
in a couple
of the games, but could not make a breakthrough to put more
pressure on
Mari.
Kirsty West bt Taylor Flavell 3 - 0 11-7 11-8 13-11
A great game as both players were striking the ball
fantastically well. The closest of all the qualifying
matches as two of
the games could have gone either way; but in the end the
left hander
proved just too tricky for Taylor.
Linda Hruzikova bt Rachel Chadwick 3 - 0 11-6 11-1
11-4

30-Jul,
Semis:
Top seeds through to Colwyn
Classic Final
Emily Whitlock bt Lisa Aitkin 11-6, 11-5, 8-11, 11-2
The game of the tournament so
far saw two inform players going head to head. The match was played
at a high tempo, with both players showing excellent retrieval
skills to keep the rally's going, even when balls seemed impossible
to get back.
Emily has a very mature game that kept her opponent pinned to the
back of the court, however Lisa showed great shot making ability;
playing brutal drops and boasts to keep Emily guessing throughout
the match. Both players showed the crowd that they will surely be
quickly climbing up the rankings.
Emily, with the home crowd behind her and playing at the top of her
powers, will take some beating in tomorrows final.
Line Hansen bt Aisling Blake 13-11, 11-9, 11-7
Aisling started the match very
well and caught her opponent by surprise with some excellent dying
drives to take the first game to sudden death.
There was not much between the two players in the games, however
Line always seemed to just have the edge on her opponent. Line has a
very tight accurate game that constantly puts her opponent on the
defensive, so it is no surprise that she is so highly ranked.
A disciplined game plan with a strong mentality, makes the number
one seed a tough opponent for anyone in women's squash. |

29-Jul,
Quarters:
Mark Carnall reports
Line Hansen 3-0 Nadine Ayman Shahin 11-8 11-9 11-3
Ayman gave the number one seed problems in the first two games with
some dazzling kills that were simply irretrievable; showing everyone
why she is such a great prospect for the future. Line showed great
composure to keep her younger opponent in check as the match
progressed, dominating with very accurate and tight drives.
Aisling Blake 3-0 Cheyna Tucker 11-7 11-2
11-5
Aisling had too much for Cheyna on the day and won the match quite
comfortably with great movement and a solid game plan. This was
unfortunate as Cheyna had not been feeling too well throughout the
tournament so lacked her usual cutting edge.
Emily Whitlock 3-0 Nele Gilis 11-6 11-2 13-11
Emily held her nerve to keep the young starlet at bay throughout the
match with a very high tempo that Nele could not quite match. She
will be looking to keep this pace throughout the tournament as some
of the rallies were extremely tough that will be hard for her
opponents to match. Nele played very well though and pushed Emily
all the way in the third game. A very hard hitting attacking player
that will be climbing up the rankings very fast.
Lisa Aitken 3-0 Lucie Fialova 11-6 12-10 11-7
Both players gave there absolute all to win. Lisa just seemed to
have the edge in each game, as although the match was very close,
she walked away winning 3-0. A very aggressive match with both
players not afraid to bump into each other and give the referee some
abuse! Lucie will be disappointed as she played well, but could not
get the result she wanted. Lisa showed the crowd that she has come
here to make an upset, and with some excellent pace and movement to
her game she will be a difficult opponent in the semi finals. |
28-Jul, First Round:
Line Hansen bt Chloe Mesic 11-6, 11-5, 11-6
The number one seed showed the rest why she is the one to beat with
a dominant performance. Chloe was no walkover though, and won some
great rallies showing great movement around the court.
Nadine Ayman Shahin bt Mari Taylor 11-5, 11-7, 6-11, 11-6
Nadine showed her class as she took control in the opening games,
however like her sister, Mari proved a hard opponent to beat digging
in to win the third game with some excellent shots.
Cheyna Tucker bt Elin Harlow 12-10, 11-5, 11-5
The home crowd couldn't take Elin over the line to win the first
game after a great opening from the youngster. Cheyna then started
to take control as the match continued
Aisling Blake bt Victoria Temple-Murray 11-7, 11-9, 8-11,
11-6, 12-10
An incredibly close match that was played at a very high tempo.
Every game was very tight so it was no surprise when Victoria began
her comeback. Both players had match ball, but Aisling managed to
regain her composure to close out the match.
Emily Whitlock bt Kirsty West 11-0, 11-4, 11-1
The home crowd cheered Emily to victory in her first game against
her friend and Cheshire team mate Kirsty. A very clinical
performance from the number 2 seed which showed the rest of the draw
she does not want to be beaten at her home club
Nele Gillis bt Thaisa Serafini 11-7, 11-6, 11-3
Both players started out evenly matched, but eventually Nele's hard
accurate drives started to create errors from her opponent. As the
match continued her winners became more effective.
Lucie Fialova bt Linda Hruzikova 11-8, 11-9 11-8
A fantastic battle between two on form players. Lucie just had the
edge in the end, but Linda came extremely close to winning the
second game.
Lisa Aitken bt Lily Taylor 11-5, 11-3, 6-11, 11-6
Lisa was just too strong for Lily, but a very gutsy performance from
the youngster made her push Lisa harder than she was expecting. Lily
deservedly took the third game with some excellent finishing.
