Juan Carlos Santacruz reports

In a flawless and fantastic tournament, the Colombian player Miguel Angel Rodriguez conquered a new PSA tournament in his professional career by defeating the rising young Peruvian player, Diego Elias who demonstrated to be the future of Latin-American squash.

During the first game, the Colombian player was firmed and focused to take the lead with long lengths and precise shots. On the top of the second game the Peruvian player pressured his opponent with speed and showed solvency, but later in the same game the Colombian found his way back and with consistency and long rallies forced his opponent to commit several unforced errors.

By the end of the second game the Peruvian player looked exhausted. It seemed as if the match was defined, but the Peruvian continued to pressure the Colombian who with patience and a varied game proposal, was able to take the match and the title of the 2014 Rancho Squash Open.

Elias and Rodriguez to contest Rancho final

Juan Carlos Santacruz reports

Diego Elias (PER) 3-0 Erik Tepoz (MEX)

With strength and precision the young Peruvian player Elias won an intensely disputed match against the Mexican player Tepoz in 3 consecutive games.

In the first 2 games the rhythm and speed of the Peruvian player frustrated Tepoz intentions to take over the match.

During the third and final game Tepoz pressured his opponent with long and strong lengths and gain an advantage of 6-10, but 4 consecutive shots on the nick from the Peruvian forced a tie break.

The Peruvians mental strength was the key to the match and allowed him to continue to the next and final round in Quito.

Miguel Angel Rodriguez (COL) 3-1 Eric Galvez (MEX)

After an intensely disputed first game with long rallies, the Mexicans speed and precision looked as if he would get the upper hand of the game, but the Colombian player was patient and took the first game in the tie break.

During the second game the Colombian was imprecise in his attack and allowed his opponent to take a 4 points lead, but with precise shots and consistency the Colombian came round and won the second game.

The third game was also heavily disputed by both players and in the tie break the Mexican imposed himself with several winning shots. During the fourth and final game the Mexican player committed a few unforced errors that caused him the match. Both players played a fantastic match in Quito.

Elias amazes
Quito
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports

Erik Tepos (MEX) 3-2 Muhd Asyraf Azan (MAS)

The Mexicans consistency generated many unforced errors from the Malaysian player and gave him the advantage of the first two games. The winning shots from the Malaysian became more precise and well executed on the nick, forcing a fifth and final game.

Tepoz adjusted his game and pressured his rival to commit unforced errors by playing to the back and controlling the game that determined the match and presented Quito with its first semifinalist.

Eric Galvez (MEX) 3-0 Sean Conroy (IRL)

The 20 year old Irish player was not a match for the experienced 30 year old Mexican, who in 3 consecutive games controlled the match and became the second semifinalist.

9 years ago, in this same scenario, Galvez won a PSA tournament

Diego Elias (PER) 3-2 Cesar Salazar (MEX)

A wonderful match was carried out by the Mexican player Salazar and the Peruvian player Elias , who will be qualified as the number 1 seed in the World Junior Open which will be held in Namibia.

The two first games were in favor of the Peruvian player who permanently attacked his opponent and controlled the games. It seemed that the third game would have the same outcome as the previous ones but Salazar changed his strategy and played back with precise lengths that generated unforced errors from Elias.

The match would be defined in the fifth and final game. The 17 year old Peruvian changed the pace of the game and made it slow, causing Salazar to commit more errors that made it possible for the Peruvian to continue to the semifinal-.

Miguel Angel Rodriguez (COL) 3-0 Arturo Salazar (MEX)

The Colombian player, Miguel Angel Rodriguez is going through his best level and with precise shots he was able to dismantle his opponent the Mexican player, Arturo Salazar and won the last pass to the semifinals.

30-Jul, Round One:
Top seeds through to
Quito quarters
Juan Carlos Santacruz reports

Eric Galvez (MEX) 3-0 Diego Gobbi (BRA)
The rhythm and speed of the experimented Mexican Galvez neutralized the youth and attitude of the Brazilian Gobbi who built up anxiety after short rallies where he committed unforced errors by attacking too fast.

Muhd Asyraf Azan (MAS) 3-1 Nicolás Caballero (PAR)
With extraordinary flexibility the Malaysian Aszan surprised the calmness and concentration of the Paraguayan Caballero who arrived from the qualy draw and is considered the future of Latin American Squash. The back hand cross courts to the nick were defining for the Malaysian who achieved winning shots in the final moments of the three games.

Sean Conroy (IRL) 3-1 Fred Reid (CAN)
The Irish Conroy (20) showed solvency and rhythm in the first couple of games with a Reid who seemed unfocused. The Canadian won the third game, but Conroy found more precision in his shots and imposed himself 3-1.

Erik Tepos (MEX) 3-0 Jonathan Maloney (ENG)
The English never managed to accommodate in the court, he seemed anxious and insecure against the solidity and consistency of the Mexican who is accustomed to altitude.

Arturo Salazar (MEX) 3-0 Francisco Alvaro (ECU)
With patience and strategy the Mexican Salazar imposed his experience against the Ecuadorian who reached the main draw from the qualy and who couldn’t find the way to propose his game. He played with dignity for his country.

Diego Elias (PER) 3-0 Muhammad Yasir Khan (PAK)
The great figure of the Peruvian and his game variety in addition to his precise attack wore out the exceptional Guatemalan player who exhibited a great level especially in the first game. Yet it wasn’t enough to defeat the strength presented by the young Elias.

Cesar Salazar (MEX) 3-1 Sebastián Chacón (ECU)
With a big crowd cheering for the local player Chacon who played with courage and started winning the first game against the Mexican Salazar, the match was filled with enthusiasm. Nonetheless, Salazar became more precise, he worked his rallies with patient and won his spot for the second round after a notable presentation of the Ecuadorian player.

Miguel Angel Rodriguez (COL) 3-0 Antonio de la Torre (GUA)
The great level of the Colombian, No. 14 PSA was clear against the Guatemalan De la Torre who arrived from the qualy showing his physical endurance yet was impotent in neutralizing the winning strategy of the Colombian who with precise shots, great rhythm and traditional velocity won the match.

The 23 year old Ecuadorian Alvaro wrote down history after defeating in consecutive games the Guatemalan Bonatti. It’s the first time that two locals from Ecuador reach the main draw.

Nicolás Caballero (Par) bt Esteban Dávalos (Ecu) 3-0

The Paraguayan prospect who is now a reality in the future of South American squash knew how to find the winning strategy against the consistency and experience from Davalos (34) who in spite of losing showed how he still has strength. Nonetheless he couldn’t stop youth and a strategy of surprise shots by Caballero.
