Three in a row for Western Province
The Western Province’s Men’s
A side – Shaun Le Roux, Jonathan Kemp, Clinton Leeuw,
Rodney Durbach, Zuko Kubukeli- powered to a 18-8 win against
Kwazulu Natal in the final of the Laser Jarvis
Interprovincial Squash Championships on Friday at the UCT
courts to successfully defend their third consecutive title
in the face of some very stiff opposition.
 In the first match Andrew Martin flew the Natal flag high as
he ousted Western Province’s captain Rodney Durbach 11-7 in
the fifth after five gruelling games.
Englishman Jonathan
Kemp provided relief for the Western Province squash
fraternity as he accounted for Mark Krajcsak in straight
games.
In the number one slot Shaun le Roux delighted the
crowd as he took the first game 11-5 against Steve
Coppinger, ranked 21 in the world.
But thereafter ensued a cat and mouse struggle as the next
two games seesawed and then Coppinger reeled in a tired le
Roux for the loss of only 4 points in the fourth and fifth
games to give Kwazulu Natal their second victory.
 The fourth match between
Zuko Kubukeli, who last Friday
played in the final of the 40-44 World Masters Championships
in Hong Kong, and former national player Adrian Hansen.
In
2010 the clash between these same 2 players saw Hansen draw
on every fibre in his body to defeat his Western Province
opponent. Four years later it was Kubukeli who emerged
victorious after a titanic struggle to equal the match status.
Clinton Leeuw then turned in a stirling display of
calculated squash to outplay Gary Wheadon in straight games
and give a resounding victory to the home side.
Central Gauteng took second position with Kwazulu
Natal third.
Free State finished a successful week winning both the Men’s
B and the Men’s D sections defeating Kwazulu Natal B and
SACD C respectively in the finals . The Men’s C section was
won by SACD B who accounted for Western Province C .
Sobhy leads Central Gauteng to title
Amanda Sohby, a 21 year old student at Harvard University,
ranked 13 it the world led Central Gauteng’s A women’s
team to an unexpected runaway victory over defending
champions Western Province when the final of the
Laser Kaplan Cup Interprovincial Squash Championships were
played at the UCT courts in Cape Town on Friday 18th July.
Former national champion, Diana Haynes provided the first
win for Central Gauteng when she defeated Western Province’s
Sacha West in four games. For the home side Siyoli Waters,
ranked 34 in the world then levelled matters edging through
12-10 in the decider of a topsy turvy match against Cheyna
Tucker, the South African Universities number 1 player.
In the number 1 slot Sohby , a former Junior World champion
and winner of 11 WSA titles, was always in control in her
straight game victory over Denmark’s Line Hansen which
nudged the Gauteng team into a 2-1 lead.
University of
Johannesburg student, Lume Landman raced to a 11-6 11-3 lead
against the more experienced Western Province number 5
player Karen Blom, before Blom took the third game 11-8 and
it seemed as though the defending champions might get back
into the picture.
Landman, however turned in a mature
focussed display, to give Gauteng victory when she clinched
the fourth game 12-10.
Elani Landman added another 3 points to the Gauteng total
when she outplayed the Western Province’s number 3 , Alex
Fuller in straight games to give Gauteng a 19-5 win.
Third position was taken by Eastern Province who beat
Northerns 19-7.
With a 33 point lead Western Province C walked away with the
B Section trophy after inflicting a 19-3 defeat on Eastern
Province B.

Africa's annual Inter-Provincial team championships are
under way in Cape Town.
Thursday, Day FOUR:
Western Province take control
Central Gauteng, who had surprised by accounting for Kwazulu
Natal on Thursday in the Laser Jarvis Cup, had no answers
for the defending champions Western Province when they
clashed on Thursday at the UCT courts, in Cape Town.
Clinton Leeuw now based in the USA, where he is coaching,
set the home ship on course when he coasted home reasonably
comfortably in straight games against Devon Hendricks.
Western Province’s captain Rodney Durbach put them another
point ahead defeating former national team mate Michael
Tootill in four games. Zuko Kubukeli, who is competing in
his 20th Jarvis, clinched the match for the home side when
in a lengthy encounter – the second game saw Kubukeli
pulling out all the stops to win it at 16-14 against wily
opponent Paul Atkinson, and although dropping the third game
8-11, Kubukeli captured the fourth game and the match 11-8
to give the home side the necessary 3 matches. Jonathan Kemp
rubbed more salt in Gauteng’s wound when he outplayed
Gautenger Thoboki Mohohlo in four games for a 4-0 lead.
For Central Gauteng Englishman Eddie Charlton salvaged some
pride defeating Shaun le Roux also in four games.
The other encounters saw Kwazulu Natal A register a 18-5 win
over Border and SACD out played Northerns 17-6.
Although it seems a foregone conclusion that Western
Province have successfully defended their title should
Kwazulu Natal storm back and defeat them tomorrow there will
be a three way games count out between Western Province,
Kwazulu Natal and Central Gauteng.
Free State A and Kwazulu Natal B clash in the final of the B
section: Western Province C meet SACD B in the C section
finals and SACD C play KZN D in the D section final.
In a repeat of the 2013 final, the women’s A section sees
top seed and defending champions,Western Province, clashing
with second seeded Central Gauteng on Friday morning at 8h30
at UCT.
For the host province’s players - Line Hansen (Denmark)
ranked 24 in the world , Siyoli Waters (34) , Alex Fuller
and Sacha West it is a case of dejavu while for Central
Gauteng only Diana Haynes and Cheyna Tucker were involved
last year. Ranked 13 in the world, twenty one year old
Amanda Sohby a student at Harvard University will add
another dimension to the inland team which includes
University of Johannesburg students Elani and Lume Landman,
who in 2013 represented Eastern Province.
It should prove to be an interesting contest.
The B section final sees Western Province B spearheaded by
Danielle van Niekerk and Zoe Durbach playing Eastern
Province B .

Tuesday 15th, Day TWO:
With three teams – defending champions Western Province A,
Kwazulu Natal A and Central Gauteng - completely dominating
the men’s A section of the Laser Cup Interprovincial squash
championships being played in Cape Town, Wednesday’s clash
between Kwazulu Natal and Central Gauteng could well provide
a key as to whom the victor may be when the final round is
played on Friday 18th July.
In the first round on Monday ,Western Province registered a
fairly comfortable 19-6 defeat against SACD whose number 1
player ,Egyptian import Karim Gawad ranked 18 in the world,
squeezed though 14-12 in the decider against home town
player Shaun Le Roux, ranked 52 in the world in the top slot
clash. Kwazulu Natal led by Steve Coppinger, ranked 21 in
the world, coasted though 20-2 against Northerns while
Central Gauteng had an equally easy 20-3 victory over
Border.
Tuesday’s matches provided few surprises as Western Province
dropped only one point against Border: Central Gauteng
registered a whitewash 20 win over Northerns and Kwazulu
Natal had a deceptively easy 20-5 score SACD. What the
scoreline does not show is that the SACD number 2 and 3
players pushed their opponents Gary Wheadon and Andrew
Martin to five tough games. A surprise was perhaps
Coppinger’s straight game win over Gawad !
In the remaining 2 A section ties Western Province should
have an easy win over the hapless Northerns side while SACD’,
lying fourth on the log , plays Border.
In the Kaplan Cup – the women’s A Section Western Province ,
the defending champions and Central Gauteng are heading the
logs with 40 and 37 points respectively with Northerns
lagging 12 points behind.
