Today ] [ Day SIX ] Day FIVE ] Day FOUR ] Day TWO/THREE ] Day ONE ] Getting Ready ]

TODAY in Trinidad ... FANTASTIC FRIDAY
AMANDA AMAZES AND STEALS THE SHOW!!!!

VETERAN'S MATCH:
John Holley bt Khaled Sobhy 13-11,11-7, 11-7

I think I fed Khaled too much roti before the match :). Holley was striking the ball well and Sobhy senior was moving a little slowly.

After a close first game that was decided by tiebreaker, Sobhy couldn't keep up in the next two. It was a good opener nonetheless.

T & T pull one back in the week series and trail 4-6 in matches.

RYAN AVENGES JACKO:
Ryan Abraham bt Sabrina Sobhy 11-5, 11-7, 11-9

Having seen his former coach / mentor go down 3-1 the day before, Ryan decided to step in to give the young Sobhy a tough match.

After a comfortable 1st game and a 6-0 lead in the second, Ryan took his foot of the gas a bit, maybe to give a little more squash. He still won the 2nd game and after being down 5-1 in the 3rd he pressed the gas again to go up 9-6 and then win the match.

Ryan brings the home team within one: 5-6

OMAR DENIED REVENGE FOR AMANDA:
Colin Ramasra bt Omar Sobhy 4-11, 11-2, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10

After the first two games were riddled with errors by Colin and Omar respectively, the match evened out from the 3rd game with a lot more intense rallies. Patience and aggression were seen throughout and it went down to the wire in the 5th.

Omar led 7-2 but quickly saw his lead diminish as Colin tied it up 7-7. Omar led 10-9 with a match ball but went for an unnecessary winner that hit the tin and allowed Colin to capitalise and eventually win 12-10 in the 5th.

Colin creates the decider: 6-6

AMANDA SEALS SOBHY VICTORY IN FIVE:
Amanda Sobhy bt Shawn Simpson 11-9, 11-4, 8-11, 7-11, 11-8

In the first game Shawn came out strong and dominated the early points with his fast pace and used some low boasts to stretch Amanda to the front court. He found himself up 7-3, before the tables turned. Amanda then changed her game and cut out the errors.

Soon it was Shawn who was doing all the moving as Amanda began to volley anything that wasn't clinching the sidewall. At 7-7, the next two rallies were long and Shawn actually gave up running for the ball he was so tired. At 9-7, there a few more exchanges as Shawn fought to hold on but eventually lost the game 11-9

In the second game, Shawn seemed unable to think or control his body as Amanda simply manipulated every single point. With wrong-footing drops and precision length, Amanda trounced him in the second game 11-4. Shawn seemed down for the count as he was unable to keep himself in the rallies. However, he did not win a Southern Caribbean title by luck.

In the third game the early rallies were a lot more even and Shawn found a sense of urgency in his play. He was attacking more and using his strengths. He maintained the lead throughout the game at 3-0, 6-4, and at 7-6, he earned the next 3 points with strong and smart playing. With 4 game balls at 10-6, Amanda could only salvage two before losing the game.

In the fourth game, Shawn started in similar fashion showing his determination. He led 3-0, 5-2, 7-5 and continued to make Amanda work and force her into pressure-induced errors. She clipped a few tins and found herself down 10-5. Once again she could only save 2 game balls before losing the 4th game.

At 2-2 in the match and 6-6 in the overall series of T & T (with Shawn) vs SOBHYS, the crowd could not ask for a better finale!

This game almost began as the previous two with Shawn claiming the first two points early with low hard drives. But at 2-0 down and 4-2 down, Amanda decided that she did not want to leave T & T on a losing note. She began attacking with volley drops again and became steadier. When Shawn thought he was on top of the rally, she would turn defense into offense and regain control. The points became longer and tighter. She led 6-4, then 6-6. At 8-7 down, she raised her game into one final gear. Some excellent choices led her to game match ball at 10-8. And of all the ways to end the match Shawn slammed the ball into the tin.

AMANDA ends victorious! Having lost against Colin with a controversial call, she was intent on deciding her own fate tonight. Shawn was a great sportsman throughout the match and Amanda was pleased with this win as she took down the 6-time Barbados National Champion.

SOBHYS BEAT T & T 7-6

At the end of the day, the crowd was immensely entertained. They got to witness a spectacular display of squash all week long and the conclusion could not be more fitting as AMAZING AMANDA was the star of the show!

The closing speeches ensued. People were thanked, token gifts were given to the Sobhys, and Amanda said a few words. The week with Amanda and her family had come to an end.

Tomorrow we would give them one final T &T experience as they would get to see "down de islands" (aka DDI).
