Women’s First Round

Today at the club in Zinacantapec we saw the start of the women’s first round in the main draw.

Siyoli Waters bt Diana Garcia  11/7, 11/8, 11/6

No 4 seed Siyoli Waters from South Africa started the proceedings by winning the first match against home girl Diana Garcia, who had done extremely well to get to this stage, and she put up an extremely brave performance in each game before Siyoli managed to finish each one off in good style to win in three.

Coline Aumard bt Liu Tsz-Ling  4/11, 9/11, 11/5, 11/7, 11/8

This match started appearing to be quite comfortable for Tsz-Ling, taking the first game fairly comfortably 11/4, and the second game 11/9 despite Coline saving two game points.

From this point Coline seized the initiative, taking the third comfortably 11/5, then going on to recover brilliantly to take the next two games 11/7 and 11/8 to win the match 3 games to 2.

Tesni Evans bt Nayelly Hernandez 11/5, 11/3, 11/4

Wild card entrant Nayelly did her utmost best against young Tesni from Wales, but unfortunately was just not enough as Tesni took the three games in comfortable fashion.

Yathreb Adel bt Kylie Lindsay (NZL) 11/2, 11/8, 11/2

The 17 year old Egyptian Yathreb took control of this match from the very beginning, taking the first game 11/2, the second 11/8 after a strong fightback by Kylie, and then the third quite comfortably 11/2 in the third.

Victoria Lust bt Mariam Metwally11/3, 11/6, 17/15

The second half of the 17 year old Egyptian duo did not fare so well, as Vicky took control of the first game from 0/3 down to win 11/3, and carried on in the same vein to take the second 11/6.

Vicky, who I have just found out has recently moved to Canada to try and improve her game, seemed to ease off in the third as Mariam started to take control and eased into a 10/8 game ball lead, but ‘Lusty’ showed her usual fighting spirit and took the game eventually 17/15 , a fine win for the English girl.

Joey Chan bt Kristen Lange 12/10, 7/11, 11/9, 11/5

Joey took an early 6/1 lead in the first game but Kristen fought back strongly to take game ball at 10/9, however Joey managed to hold out to take the game 12/10.

In an up and down second game Kristen led 6/2, Joey fought back to lead 7/6, but Kristen served out to win 11/7. From then on Joey slowly took control to take the next two games 11/9 and 11/5 as Kristen seemed to lose her stamina.

Olga Ertlova bt Donna Urquhart 11/1, 12/10, 11/5

The final match of the afternoon session in the women’s tournament brought the first major upset of the day, as Olga overcame the No 1 seed and firm favourite of the tournament in three excellent games of squash, simply overpowering Donna in the first game to win in just two hands 11/1.

Donna, obviously playing below par because of her recent injury lay-off, recovered slightly in the second to get to game ball first at 10/8 but Olga simply played magnificently to serve out to win the game 12/10. From then on Donna was obviously feeling the strain as Olga, playing some fantastic squash, took the third game 11/5 for what she described as a fabulous victory.

Samantha Teran bt Megan Craig 11/8, 11/3, 11/7

Later in the evening on the Glass Court the women’s first round was completed when the home crowd favourite Samantha took the first game eventually 11/8, after a real tough battle against young Megan.

Samantha then went on to take the second comfortably 11/3, to the delight of the home fans, and took the third 11/7 despite a very gutsy performance from Megan.

Men’s First Round

Marwan El Shorbagy bt Tom Richards 11/5, 11/2, 11/4
Alfredo Avila bt Adrian Waller  8/11, 11/7, 11/7, 16/14
Gregoire Marche bt Henrik Mustonen 11/13, 11/6, 6/11, 11/4, 11/2

Being played at the same time as the women’s matches at the Zinacantepec Club, I was unfortunately unable to see any of these men’s matches, but the first match was obviously a quite comfortable win for Marwan, but judging by the noise from the small but partisan crowd the win for the young Mexican Alfredo was obviously the match of the day for the local fans, and another fine victory for this young player.

The third match was plainly a very up and down battle in which Greg appeared to slowly grind down the opposition shown by Henrik, who had used up an awful lot of energy in the qualifying rounds.

The men’s first round matches then moved on to the Glass Court showground in the middle of Toluca, which were fortunately not affected by a tropical thunderstorm just before the matches were due to start.

Gregory Gaultier bt Matthew Karwalski 11/5, 11/3, 11/3

There cannot be any words left to describe the majestic squash of Gregory Gaultier, as he just simply overpowered the brave opposition shown by qualifier Matthew, who did play some great squash but was just not up to the level of the French master.

Miguel Angel Rodriguez bt Stephen Coppinger 11/3, 11/7, 11/8

In spite of there only being one place between these two players in the world rankings, Stephen just did not have the resilience to stop the powerful display of great squash shown by the Columbian Miguel, who overcame the brilliant opposition eventually towin in three games.

Omar Mossad bt Nicolas Mueller 11/9, 9/11, 11/8, 11/6

The surprise of last year’s tournament Omar, who came from qualifying to reach the final, has had a fantastic year since then, climbing to #11in the world rankings, had a very tough battle here today against Nicolas, ranked at # 21, but eventually managed to overcome his very tough opponent to win in four games after 50 minutes of wonderful squash.

Borja Golan bt Karim Ali Fathi 11/5, 12/10, 11/6

Getting late into the night here in the centre of Toluca, No 3 seed Borja finally overcame the strong opposition shown by the young Egyptian Karim, with both players showing some beautiful touches at times, but Borja managed to show his experience of coming back from a long injury break to get to #9 in the world rankings, but Karim will not be too long before rising to the top of the rankings.

Mohamed El Shorbagy bt Cesar Salazar 11/5, 11/5, 11/7

Despite a large Mexican crowd staying late into the night to cheer on Cesar the wild card entrant, Mohamed managed to quieten the crowd with an awesome display of power and racquet skills, showing why he is the no2 seed here, and #6 in the world rankings, by winning in three straight games, even though Cesar showed great fighting capabilities.
