17-Sep:
Day ONE in Toluca

A very topsy turvy day in the women’s first round qualifiers, after some confusion with the overnight rescheduling, saw a walkover in the first match for Diana Garcia of Mexico.

When play eventually got underway the experienced Gaby Huber from Switzerland swept comfortably through to the next round with a 3 – 0 win over the young Mexican Maria Fernanda Rivera.

This was followed by another comfortable 3 - 0 win for Egyptian Yathreb Adel over Mexican Karina Heredia. Another walkover followed for Mariam Metwally from Egypt, and the rather truncated schedule finished with a comfortable win for Mexican Ivonne Diaz over her compatriot Guadalupe Ramirez, 3 – 0 in just 15 mins.

The men’s first round qualifying was to see a full schedule of eight matches, the first three being played at the same time as the women’s matches at the Zinacantepec Club.

The first match saw Englishman Jamie Haycocks finally succeed 3 games to 1 in a valiantly fought match lasting 58 minutes against Mexican Erik Tepos Valtierra, who had a very small but vociferous crowd cheering him all the way.

Next up saw Matt Karwalski from Australia winning 3 – 0 in another hard fought match against another Mexican, Fernando Lopez.

This was followed by the final match at Zinacantepec, which finished in another very hard fought match with a win for Australian Steve Finitsis 3 games to win against another Mexican Jonathan Ramos, who again had great support from the local crowd.

That finished the afternoon session at Zinacantepec, we then moved to the Glass Court in the centre of Toluca, and after the sun set and the lights came on in the Glass Court we were regaled with some fantastic squash on a fantastic court.

First up we saw Henrik Mustonen of Finland defeat Welshman Peter Creed 3 games to nil in 30 minutes.

Then came the first upset of the day when Mexican Arturo Salazar fought back from 2 games to 1 down against World ranked #40 Ali Anwar Reda to take the next two games fairly comfortably for a fabulous win.

Next up was another Egyptian/Mexican battle, but this time with quite a different ending as Karim Ali Fathi comfortably winning in three against Mexican Under 19 player Edgar Zayas, despite Edgar having huge support from his family and friends from Queretaro.

An all Mexican affair followed this as Alfredo Avila took the first two games comfortably against his compatriot Ricardo Lopez, but then struggled slightly to take the third 13/11.

To finish the evening’s proceedings Campbell Grayson from New Zealand won a hard fought match against Mexican Marco Toriz from Boca Del Rio in three straight games.

All eventually tied up for the night after a long and sometimes frustrating day, but tomorrow should bring some comfort as we have four women’s final qualifiers at Zinacantepec followed by four men’s final qualifiers at the Glass Court in Toluca.
