25-Nov-09:
WORLD'S LEADING SQUASH STARS RETURN TO ISS CANARY
WHARF CLASSIC IN 2010
Tickets are now on sale for the 2010
ISS Canary Wharf Squash Classic as the game’s leading stars
prepare to return to London for one of the world’s major
tournaments.
The
seventh edition of this PSA Five-Star world-ranking tournament
takes place from March 22-26 next year and co-promoter
Peter Nicol is urging squash lovers to book tickets early to
avoid disappointment.
The former world champion said: “This year we attracted eight of
the world’s top ten players and it was no surprise that the
event sold out so quickly.
“We are very proud of the fact that we are able to stage the
event at the East Wintergarden at Canary Wharf and over the
years it has become one of the most popular venues on the world
tour for players and spectators alike.
“This year, for the fourth year running, we sold every back-wall
seat for every night of the tournament and I can assure you the
players love the atmosphere. We have wonderfully loyal and
supportive Title Sponsors in ISS Facility Services and we are
grateful to them for making it possible to showcase top
professional squash in such a spectacular fashion.”
The worldwide squash community was bitterly disappointed by the
sport’s failure to be voted in to the 2016 Olympic Games at the
recent IOC summit but Nicol added:
“The decision was a huge disappointment but, as an ambitious
sport, we must continue to do what we do best. And that means
raising the profile of our game with fantastic events like
Canary Wharf.
“We know that squash enthusiasts love the tournament, which is
why they keep returning year after year, but one of the biggest
thrills is when newcomers to the sport turn up and are
absolutely bowled over by the visual appeal of the glass court
and the brilliant entertainment served up by the players inside
it.”
The
2009 ISS Canary Wharf title was won by Australia’s two-time
world champion David Palmer, who beat England’s James
Willstrop in the final.
Willstrop had beaten top seed Amr Shabana in the
semi-finals but was clearly in some discomfort in the final
because of an injured ankle which required surgery in the
summer.
Willstrop slipped out of the world top ten as he recuperated
from the operation but he is now back up to No.7 in the current
PSA rankings, with fellow Englishmen Nick Matthew at
five, Peter Barker at nine, Adrian Grant at ten
and Alister Walker at twelve.
Nicol has been working hard on court, coaching several of the
leading English players, and he added: “Having five England
players in the world top 12 shows how strong we are as a squash
nation and we look forward to seeing all of them in action at
Canary Wharf. They know they will be assured of enormous support
from the home crowd.”
