WOMEN’S WORLD No.1 NICOL DAVID MEETS BRITISH CHAMPION ALISON WATERS IN
ISS CANARY WHARF SQUASH CHALLENGE
WOMEN’S world number one Nicol David is taking part in a special
International Challenge match against the new British champion Alison
Waters during the ISS Canary Wharf Squash Classic.
David,
from Malaysia, is the most dominant figure in women’s squash, having
held the world No.1 position for 19 consecutive months. She meets the
London-based Waters at the East Wintergarden on finals night of the ISS
Canary Wharf Squash Classic on Friday March 14.
Co-promoter Tim Garner said: “The Women’s International Challenge
will be a major addition to the finals night programme and we are
delighted that Nicol and Alison will be in action on the glass court to
showcase the quality of women’s squash at the highest level.
“They are both formidable athletes and exceptional squash players and we
are sure the Canary Wharf squash fans will be thrilled at the prospect
of seeing them in action.”
David has twice won the World Open Championship, in Hong Kong in 2005
and Belfast in 2006, but her hopes of a hat-trick of titles were dashed
when she suffered a surprise second-round loss to Shelley Kitchen of New
Zealand in the 2007 World Open in Madrid in October.
That
may have been third time unlucky for the 24-year-old Malaysian, but it
was the opposite for Alison Waters when she claimed her first National
Championship title in Manchester last week during her third appearance
in the final.
Waters, the world No.10 from north London, beat Laura Lengthorn-Massaro
in four games to claim the title after beating No.2 seed Jenny Duncalf
in the semi-final, a revenge victory for her defeat in last year’s
final.
James Willstrop, who is the men’s No.2 seed at Canary Wharf
behind Gregory Gaultier of France, retained his National title by
beating Pontefract and England team-mate Lee Beachill in the final.
