Selby claims Solent Classic

Lee-on-Solent Tennis Squash and Fitness Club hosts for the second year running of the BSPA Solent Classic tournament had a thrilling opening match played by their own squash professional Tim Vail against his opponent Darren Lewis.

There was no evidence of Vail’s niggling groin strain as the game set off at a fast and furious pace with Vail opting for a lot of cross court volleying. Vail played the ball deep on the cross court causing his opponent to be put under a lot of pressure. This resulted in Vail’s comfortable 3-0 victory.

Speaking to his opponent before the match Lewis said on the two occasions he had played Vail in the Surrey cup he had lost 3-2, but this time Vail’s dominance in the match was clearly evident.

Chris Rand one of Lee-on-Solent’s own 1st team players was always going to have his work cut out playing 3/4 seeded player Steve Meads. Mead who is a stead fast, talented player was a challenge for Rand, but he could not match the pace and Meads won 3-0. Rand is now going to concentrate on the graded tournament where he is through to the semi final.

The semi final between Tim Vail and Steve Meads saw Meads set out with a flying start. The pace was quick, which Vail found hard to match and he was always on catch up. “I felt very tired, heavy and slow”. This resulted in Mead having a comfortable 3-0 victory over Vail.

The other semi final match between Daryl Selby and Jam Adnan resulted in a victory to Selby. Selby was fast, accurate and dominated the match right the way through. Adnan was unable to match the pace so Selby sailed to the 3-0 victory.

The final between Daryl Selby and Steve Meads was guaranteed to be a lively match. Selby was well prepared for the tournament he was feeling fit and said he had played well all week. Selby showed control throughout the match. His footwork enabled him to glide around the court effortlessly. Mead did not give up the fight and worked very hard but just couldn’t match Selby’s flair. So the outcome was a clear 3-0 victory to Selby.

After the match, Selby said “I very much enjoyed the game and always enjoy playing Steve. I played well.” Both players said they enjoy coming to Lee-on-Solent and playing at the club. Mead in his defeat said “Selby was too young and fit and too good. I’m too old but I try hard!”

The presentation of the winners’ trophies was delivered by Tim Vail with the sponsors of the event Lee-on-Solent Tennis Squash & Fitness Club, Bill Williams, Terry Stubbington and Bob Silvester lending a hand.
