Jackman cruises to Grantham title
Top seed Cassie Jackman retained her BSPA Grantham Open title with
a 3/0 over Suffolk's surprise finalist Vicky Lankester in the
final.
Nerves seemed to get the better of Lankester as she faced the world number
one, and she never settled into her game as Jackman cruised to a victory
which sets her up for next week's National Championships.

GOUGHIE GOES FOR IT IN GRANTHAM
Alex Gough, seeded 3/4, produced a succession of stunning displays
to win the BSPA Grantham Open from the strongest draw in the history of this
rapidly developing series, attracted by a record £7,000 prize fund. He took
out brothers Ben and Tim Garner in the first two rounds, having to work hard
to beat Tim 15-8 in the fifth, then faced another marathon match in the
semi-finals against local hero Mark Chaloner, the number two seed. Despite
some rousing support for the Lincolnshire lad, Goughie again triumphed in the
fifth, this time 15-11.
Top seed John White had been casually and stylishly picking off all the
opposition in the top half of the draw, beating Liam Kenny before facing a
battle of the giants against the still-growing James Willstrop in the
quarter-finals. I wouldn't call Big John a soft touch (because he's a lot
taller than me), but he is always likely to allow aspiring youngsters to win
the odd game. Big James managed to pinch the second but White hit just enough
stunning winners to reach the semi-finals against joint 3/4 seed Peter Genever,
whom he beat 15-7 in the fourth. No news yet of how the final went, only the
scoreline so far, but it looked a bit of a cruise for Goughie, 15-9, 15-5,
15-8.
Cassie Campion won the women's event, again from a very strong draw, beating
Kent's Stephanie Brind 9-4, 9-0, 6-9, 9-3 in the final. In the semi-finals,
Cassie beat Jenny Tranfield 9-4, 9-4, 9-1 while Stephanie beat Scotland's Pam
Nimmo 9-4, 9-0, 4-9, 9-1.

Grantham Open returns to BSPA Circuit
The BSPA are delighted to announce the return of the
Grantham Open to the British squash calendar. Joining the Prince Grand Prix in
February, it promises to be the biggest tournament ever on the BSPA circuit.
The Men's event is to have a prize fund of £5000 (with the
winner picking up £1000), while the Women will battle it out for £2000 (a top
prize of £500). BSPA's Tim Garner commented "it is fantastic to have the
Grantham Open back on after an absence of a couple of years. We are pleased to
welcome them to our circuit."
Ron Moules and his team have done a fabulous job in raising
a prize fund that is sure to attract a top class entry.
The tournament slips into the circuit just prior to the
Nationals in Manchester and so will provide a good guide as to the form of the
players as they approach one of England Squash's premier events.
