 Jarvis/Kaplan Cup 2016

 11-15 Jul, Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
15-Jul, Day Five:
Kwazulu Natal (M) & Central Gauteng (W)
emerge victorious...

Kwazulu Natal (men) and Central Gauteng (women) were crowned at the end of the 57th Jarvis Kaplan Cup Interprovincial Squash Championships hosted by the Midlands Squash Association in Pietermaritzburg on Friday afternoon.

The men’s final was completely dominated by defending champions Kwazulu Natal A, spearheaded by Steve Coppinger and Laurans Anjema, with Western Province fading out of the picture. Rodney Durbach, the experienced Western Province number 4, drew first blood as he accounted for Andrew Martin in straight games. Durbach raced through the first two game 11-6 11-4 before Martin, who has been struggling to find some form during the week, found his length and timing but the experienced Durbach won the game 13-11. Kwazulu Natal’s import from the Netherlands, Laurans Jan Anjema, levelled the tie when he defeated Pierdro Schweertman in four games.

Ranked 24 in the world, the 2016 national champion Steve Coppinger, was in rampant mood as he disposed of national team mate, Shaun le Roux, for the loss of only 6 points 11-2 11-2 11-2. It was then left to the captain, Adrian Hansen to put the final nail in Western Province’s coffin as he outplayed Zuko Kubukeli 11-6 11-4 11-4 to give Kwazulu Natal their fifth victory in the past 10 years.

Third place was taken by SACD followed by Central Gauteng in fourth.

Despite losing to Northerns 15-8 on the first day of the event, Central Gauteng women’s A side bounced back to defeat Western Province 16-7 in Friday’s final clash. Lume Landman had little trouble in beating Sacha West (WP) in straight games but the 2015 national champion, Alex Fuller, notched a win for the coastal side by disposing of Cheyna Tucker in straight games. Playing in her first Kaplan Cup, Heba el Torky of Egypt , ranked 23 in the world, managed to subdue Siyoli Waters in 4 games to give Central Gauteng the edge at 2-1 in matches.

In an evenly matched tough encounter Western Province’s Miranda Lang balanced the scale as she drew on all her reserves to edge through 13-11 in the decider against Michelle Kohne, the Central Gauteng B side number 1. who replaced an injured Mariske Wiese.

The pressure then fell on Elani Landman (CG) and Karen Blom (WP) but it was the positive attacking play of Landman who steered Central Gauteng to victory as she outplayed Blom in straight games.

Northerns who registered a an easy 17-4 win over Eastern Province A slipped into second place followed by Western Province and Eastern Province.

For the first time in the 57 year history of the Jarvis Cup, Midlands A , who defeated Border A 15-5 in Friday’s B section final, will gain promotion in 2017 to the A section.

Eastern Province B women’s team annexed the B section followed by Midlands A and Central Gauteng B.

The men’s C section was a closely contested affair with Border B edging through to win the section with 96 points followed by Easterns A on 95 and Central Gauteng third with 81 points.

In 2017 Midlands B will also gain promotion to the Men’s C section having walked away with the D section honours by a comfortable margin of 16 points. Second was Central Gauteng D with Eastern Province B in third place.

13-Jul, Day THREE:
Heat is on in Jarvis Cup

With only two days’ play remaining in the Jarvis/Kaplan Cup interprovincial squash championships being played in Pietermaritzburg the heat is on as the top 3 men’s teams – defending champions Kwazulu Natal, Western Province and SACD vie for top honours.

In the past decade Western Province has won the title 5 times (2006, 2009, 2012, 2013, 2014) while Kwazulu Natal has emerged victorious on 4 occasions (2008, 2010, 2011 and 2015).

In Wednesday’s fixtures SACD inflicted a fairly surprising 17-8 defeat on Central Gauteng. In the first match of the tie, Gauteng’s captain Devon Hendrikse scraped through 13-11 in the decider in a really tough encounter with SACD’s JP Brits only to see Jimmy Schlebusch and Rudi van Niekerk account for Kyle Maree and Paul Atkinson respectively to give SACD a 2-1 in matches lead. Christo Potgieter in the number 2 slot provided a surprise as he outplayed the recent National Championship runner-up, Thoboli Mohohlo, in straight games 11-8 11-4 11-8 to give SACD victory. The last tie saw Tarek Momen salvage 3 points for the Gauteng team as he defeated Karim Gawad in 4 games.

Western Province notched a whitewash win 20 - 4 over Northerns. In the first match of the tie Ruan Olivier (N) pushed Clinton Leeuw, now based in the USA, to 5 games but thereafter it was pretty much one way traffic with Shaun Le Roux, Pierdro Schweertman, Rodney Durbach and Daniel Smith clinching their matches against Kelvin Ndhlovu, Nell van der Merwe, Craig Ruane and Jason Phillips.

Defending champions Kwazulu Natal spearheaded by Steve Coppinger, ranked 24 in the world , and Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands had an equally easy 20-3 win over Free State with only Andrew Martin, their number 4, stuttering to a 3-2 win over St Andrews learner John Kuhn.

Thursday’s encounters sees Kwazulu Natal facing Central Gauteng and Western Province taking on the SACD side which could be the match of the day.

In the women’s Kaplan Cup, Central Gauteng who suffered a 15-8 loss to Northerns on the first day, bounced back with another 20 full house beating SACD 20-3. Western Province accounted for Northerns 15-9 in an interesting encounter. Karen Blom, Sacha West and Miranda Lang, their 3,4 and 5 strings defeated Christine Ferreira, Megan Page and Makgosi Peloakgosi to give them a win while in the number 2 slot Alex Fuller was outplayed in straight games by 2016 National champion Milnay Louw and Siyoli Waters bowed out in 4 games to Sarah Jane Perry, ranked 12 in the world.

12-Jul, Day Two:
KZ and WP on course in Jarvis quest

Although there are still 3 days’ play in the annual Jarvis/Kaplan Cup interprovincial Squash Championships being played in Pietermaritzburg, defending champions in the Jarvis Cup Kwazulu Natal and last year’s runner up Western Province still look on track for  the deciding clash on Friday  15th July.

Following on Monday’s 20-1 win over Northerns, Kwazulu Natal defeated SACD by a fairly comfortable 15-8 in the second round. SACD players Rudi van Niekerk and Jimmy Schlebusch provided the surprises when they accounted for Adrian Hansen and Andrew Martin respectively but Gary Wheadon and Laurens Jan Anjema levelled matters for last year’s winners beating  JP Brits and Christo Potgieter. Steve Coppinger swung the scales when he beat Karim  Gawad, ranked 10 in the world, in 4 hard fought entertaining games.

Western Province had an easier 18-6 win against Free State . Calvin Deutschman, who has moved up from the Free State B side following Lawrence Kuhn’s unfortunate Achilles injury on Monday, provided the surprise outlasting Zuko Kubukeli in 4 games. Piedro Schweertman, Clinton Leeuw and Rodney Durbach notched the necessary points to give Western Province the victory, but  it was Omar Meguid the Free State number 1 who nearly stole the thunder as he extended Shaun le Roux to 12-10 in the decider before bowing out .

Central Gauteng registered a runaway 20-1 in against Northerns and sit in third position.

In the Kaplan Cup women's event Western Province made their first appearance having had a bye on Monday  and disposed of SACD 20-1 . For SACD Lauren Siddall notched their sole point when she won the first game against Siyoli Waters before Waters gained control taking the next 3 games.

2015 winners Central Gauteng had an easy 20-4 victory against Eastern Province.

11-Jul, Day One:
Defending champs stunned on opening day

Central Gauteng, the defending champions of the Kaplan Cup, the women’s squash interprovincial, were stunned on the opening day of the championships being played in Pietermaritzburg when they crashed to a 15-8 defeat against Northerns, spearheaded by Sarah Jane Perry ranked 12 in the world and 2016 SA National champion, Milnay Louw.

In the first match of the encounter Elani Landman registered a straight games victory for Gauteng when she outplayed Christine Ferreira and Lume Landman made it 2-0 with a win over Tukkies student Megan Page.

Northerns Makgosi Peloakgosi needed only three games to oust Mariske Wiese. Playing confident attacking squash, Louw then raced to a straight game win against Cheyna Tucker to make it two-all. In a hard fought tussle Perry edged through in 5 games against the Egyptian Heba el Torky for Northerns to savour victory.

Eastern Province had a surprisingly easy win over SACD 19-3.

In the Jarvis Cup – the men’s interprovincial- Gauteng was involved in a tough tussle with last year’s runners-up, Western Province with Province winning through 15-8. In the first match – the clash of the number 3’s Western Province’s Clinton Leeuw, who is based in the USA ,survived a really tough battle with Devon Hendrikse.

Trailing by 2 games to 1 Leeuw clawed through the fourth game 12-10 and took the decider 11-8 to give the coastal side a 1-0 lead. Experienced Rodney Durbach then registered a 11-3 11-4 11-9 win against Kyle Maree before Gauteng’s Paul Atkinson notched a point for Central Gauteng when he accounted for Zuko Kubukeli 12-10 in the fourth game.

Newcomer to Western Province, Piedro Schweertman raced though in straight games against Thoboki Mohohlo to clinch victory and it was left to Egyptian Tarek Momen to salvage some pride for Central Gauteng as he defeated Shaun le Roux.

SACD A lead by Karim Gawad of Egypt started their challenge off in powerful fashion defeating the newly promoted Free State team 20-1 while defending champions, Kwazulu Natal ,led by 8 times National champion Steve Coppinger inflicted a 20-2 defeat on Northerns.

Egyptians Karim Gawad , ranked 8th in the world and Tarek Momen, ranked 10, will appear for SACD A and Central Gauteng A respectively. South Africa’s Steve Coppinger, ranked 24 will lead Kwazulu Natal in defence of the title they won in 2015 when they narrowly defeated Western Province in a tough final.

Competition will be razor edged with Kwazulu Natal’s line-up including Laurens Anjema of the Netherlands, Gary Wheadon, Andrew Martin and long time captain Adrian Hansen who will have to pull out all the stops in trying to subdue Western Province’s side led by Shaun le Roux.

There is only one change in the Western Province side from 2015 with Pedro Schweertman joining Le Roux, Clinton Leeuw , Rodney Durbach and Zuko Kubukeli. Central Gauteng, placed third last year, could provide a few surprises. Their attack led by Momen also includes 2016 SA Nationals runner-up, Thoboki Mohohlo, Devon Hendrikse, Kyle Maree and Paul Atkinson.

The remaining teams in the A section which will be played on a round robin basis are Northerns A with Zambian, Kelvin Ndhlovu in the top berth, and newly promoted Free State led by Omar Addel Meguib.

In the Kaplan Cup (the women’s A section) the final could well be between last year’s top two teams Central Gauteng and Western Province.

For Central Gautng Egyptian Heba el Tourky, ranked 23 in the world, has Cheyna Tucker and Elani Landman – both losing semi-finalist at last week’s national championships - Lume Landman , winner of the recent Reunion Championships and Tukkies student Mariska Wiese completing the defending champion’s line-up.

Western Province sees Siyoli Waters, Alexandra Fuller, Karen Blom, Sacha West, Miranda Lang and Karen Schultz hungry to regain the trophy they last won in 2013.

The surprise team could be Northerns who finished second last in 2015. In number 1 slot is England’s Sarah-Jane Perry ranked 12 in the world, followed by 2016 S A National Champion Milnay Louw who is in great form at the moment , Christine Ferreira, winner of the World Deaf title in 2010 and 2012, Megan Page and Makgosi Peloakgosi.

SACD A and Eastern Province A complete the section’s line-up.

There are four sections in the men’s championships with two in the Women’s which will be hosted in daily sessions from 9an at Collegians Club, Epworth, and Victoria Country Club.
