Laser Jarvis / Kaplan Cup 2015
06-10 Jul, Potchefstroom, South Africa
10-Jul, Finals Day:
Kwazulu Natal take the Jarvis Cup by a point, Kaplan Cup for Central Gauteng ...

Kwazulu Natal, spearheaded by national champion Steve Coppinger, ranked 17 in the world, and new acquisition Laurens Jan Anjema from the Netherlands together with Central Gauteng, who had Emma Beddoes, ranked 13 in the world, at the helm emerged victorious when the 2015 Laser Jarvis Kaplan Interprovincial Squash Championships were completed in Potchefstroom on Friday afternoon.

In a lengthy energy sapping clash of the captains, Kwazulu Natal’s Adrian Hansen, playing in his 25th and last Jarvis Cup, hung on in his usual inimitable fashion to edge through 11-9 in the decider against Western Province’s Zuko Kubukeli .

In the second match Clinton Leeuw (WP) raced through 11-5 11-9 11-4 against Gary Wheadon to level the matches. Third match on was between Steve Coppinger and Cameron Pilley of Australia, ranked 19 in the world.

The score line of 11-9 9-11 11-9 9-11 11-9 – 2 points difference - clearly illustrates the match which delighted the spectators at the North West venue, hosting an event of this magnitude for the first time. It was the lanky Kwazulu Natalian who clinched the match on his first match point to give Kwazulu Natal the edge.

Anjema and Western Province’s Shaun le Roux took to the court . Games seesawed but it was Anjema who dominated the play pocketing the fifth game for the loss of only 2 points to give Kwazulu Natal their first Jarvis crown since 2011.

Defending champions in the women’s Kaplan Cup, Central Gauteng lost the first match in the final when Western Province’s Karen Schultz defeated Adel Weir in straight games.

Ranked 5 in the country, University of Johannesburg student, Elani Landman provided the surprise when playing attacking but consistent squash she upset the 2015 National Champions Alexandra Fuller 11-6 13-15 11-9 2-10. Emma Beddoes was in rampant form as she garnered another win for Central Gauteng outplaying Line Hansen of Denmark in straight games. Western Province’s Siyoli Waters levelled the match score when she beat Cheyna Tucker in straight games.

With matches even, Lume Landman who together with her twin Elani had dominated play last week in the Universities tournament in Johannesburg, showed little outward sign of nervousness as she and the experienced Western Province number 4 Sacha West engaged in a protracted battle. Landman took the first game 12-10 but West won the second 16-14. Extremely fit and well conditioned, Landman started taking control winning the third game 11-3 and the fourth 11-6 to give Central Gauteng a well earned victory .

Honours in the other sections were spread evenly with Northerns A winning the men’s B section: Free State B the C section and SACD C the D section. Western Province B dominated the women’s B section finishing 18 points ahead of Midlands A.

09-Jul, Day FOUR:
Stage is set for final showdowns

The stage is set for the showdown between defending champions, Western Province and second seeded Kwazulu Natal at the Defence Courts in Potchefstroom on Friday when the final round of the Laser Jarvis Kaplan Interprovincial squash championships will be played.

In Thursday’s fourth round Kwazulu Natal , who last won the title in 2011, dropped only 1 game against Border picking up 20 points.

Although a tough battle in the 3, 4,and 5 slots Central Gauteng faded away to an 8-19 defeat against Western Province.

Based in the USA , Province’s Clinton Leeuw took 5 games to gain the edge over Michael Wood, the Central Gauteng number 3. Former National captain, Rodney Durbach, who had pulled out all the stops earlier in the week to beat SACD’s Jimmy Schlebusch and Free State’s Reinhold Hergeth, found himself involved in another 5 setter with Devon Hendrikse.

Hendrikse (CG) took a 2 games to 1 lead but was unable to clinch the advantage in the fourth as Durbach saved 4 match points clawing his way to 15-13 and level the match at two games all. Durbach then seemed to find a second wind and took the decider 9-5 . Ex Western Province player Rudi Willemse inflicted another defeat on Zuko Kubekeli scraping through 11-9 in the fifth game.

Thereafter it was one way traffic as Shaun le Roux accounted for Thoboki Mohohlo in four games and Cameron Pilley, ranked 19 in the world, raced through in straight games against Eddie Charlton to stamp their seal on the match.

Free State caused the surprise when they beat the more favoured SACD team 18-7. In the first match Paul Rodrigues, the Free State number 3, pushed Christo Potgieter , ranked 6 in the country to 5 games losing 10-12 in the decider. Reinholdt Hergeth (FS) was also involved in a five game tussle with Jimmy Schlebusch losing 7-11 in the fifth.

Jacques Swanepoel, unbeaten this week, notched another victory in straight games over Rudi van Niekerk to put Free State back into the match.

Ranked 19 in the country Lawrence Kuhn then outplayed JP Brits , ranked 5, to level the match score. It was left to Omar Meguid, ranked 29 in the world, to provide the biggest upset when he beat fellow Egyptian Karim Awad , ranked 14 in the world, in 4 games .

In the women’s final defending champions Central Gauteng will clash with Western Province. The two provinces have faced each other in the final for the past ten years with the scale balance 6-4 for the coastal side.

In Thursday’s matches Central Gauteng whitewashed Northerns 20-0 while Western Province dropped only 4 games in their encounter with Eastern Province, winning 18-4.

UJ student Kacey Leigh Dodd inflicted a 3-1 defeat on her Western Province counterpart, Karen Schultz. In the third tie SACD beat Kwazulu Natal 17-9.

Western Province B is the only unbeaten side in the Women’s B section and leads the section with 86 points , 8 points ahead of Midlands, who have only lost 1 match.

The Men’s B final is between Northerns A and Central Gauteng B while the C section sees Western Province C clash with Free State B.

The Men’s D section will provide lots of excitement as three teams have lost 1 match each and another 2 have lost 2 matches. Likely winners SACD C sit on 78 points with one match lost and they face Free State C bottom of the log on 29.

Northerns C
on 71 points also with one match lost meet Midlands B 56 points and 2 matches lost. Central Gauteng D also one match lost on 77 points play SACD D with 66 points and 2 matches lost.

08-Jul, Day THREE:
All to play for in Potchesfstroom

With two rounds remaining in the Laser Jarvis Kaplan Interprovincial Squash Championships, anything can still happen in the men’s A section depending on what transpires in the clash between defending champions Western Province and the third seeds Central Gauteng on Thursday afternoon.

Wednesday’s matches saw Western Province run out easy 20-3 winners against Border, which is lying bottom of the log. For Border Tristan Eysele, Jason Le Roux and Kelvin Edwards each managed to take a game off their more illustrious opponents, Shaun Le Roux, Clinton Leeuw and Rodney Durbach respectively.

Central Gauteng outplayed Free State by 16 point to 7 with the respective number 1 ‘s Eddie Charlton and Omar Meguid engaging in a titanic struggle which Meguid, the Free State number 1, managed to win in the fifth game.

Similarly to the first day, hosts SACD just missed causing an upset in their encounter with Kwazulu Natal. Christo Potgieter drew first blood when he edged through 13-11 in the fifth game against the Kwazulu Natalian number 3, Gary Wheadon.

But Andrew Martin levelled matters when he had a surprisingly easy straight game win over Jimmy Schlebusch. Former Eastern Province player, Rudi van Niekerk, then defeated the Kwazulu Natal captain Adrian Hansen in four games to give SACD the edge.

The newly acquired Kwazulu Natalian Laurens Jan Anjema from the Netherlands then beat JP Brits comfortably in straight games to again level the tie. Ranked 14 in the world, Karim Gawad took a two love lead against Steven Coppinger much to the delight of SACD .

But victory was not to be theirs as a cool and clinical National champion, Steve Coppinger gradually fought his way back into the match winning the next two games 11-7 11-3 and clinched the tie for the second seeds at 11-6 in the decider.

Western Province and Central Gauteng are completely dominating the women’s A section.

Top seeds Western Province spearheaded by Denmark’s Line Hansen and Siyoli Waters have collected 3 full houses and lie 3 points ahead of Central Gauteng, the defending champions and are on track for an exciting final on Friday.

Thursday’s matches will see the crossover play-offs in the Men’s B and C sections and a further round in the remaining men’s A and D sections and the women’s A and B sections.

07-Jul, Day TWO:
Top seeds escape again

For the second consecutive day one of the two top seeds in the Laser Jarvis Kaplan Cup Interprovincial Squash Championships escaped from a near losing position to turn the tables and win the encounter much to the disappointment of their opponents.

Monday saw defending champions Western Province snatch the match from SACD A. Tuesday it was the turn of second seeded Kwazulu Natal who survived against third seeded Central Gauteng.

Michael Wood notched the first points for third seeded Central Gauteng when he edged though 13-11 in the fourth game against Gary Wheadon, ranked 4 in the country.

The next match saw Gauteng’s Devon Hendrikse account for Andrew Martin also in 4 games.

Games seesawed in the vital third match between Rudi Willemse (CG ) and the wily Adrian Hansen , a former National player. Willemse trailing 1-2 in games, pocketed the fourth 11-8 and needed only 11 points to swing the match Central Gauteng’s way but Hansen took control in the fifth to give the second seeds the chance to survive.

In rampant form Lauren Jan Anjema needed only 3 games to subdue Thokoki Mohohlo and it was left to national champion, Steve Coppinger to extinguish the third seeds fire as he raced though 11-7 11-5 11-3 against Eddie Charlton.

Western Province was again involved in a tough struggle in their clash with Free State. Clinton Leeuw put the first points on the board defeating Paul Rodrigues in 4 games.

Perhaps feeling the effects of his titanic match with Jimmy Schlebush on the first day , Rodney Durbach found himself clawing his way to a five game win , this time over Reinhold Hergeth, presently based in the USA.

Captain Zuko Kubukeli experienced his second consecutive defeat as he bowed out to Jacques Swanepoel in four games. But again Shaun Le Roux waltzed to a straight game victory over Lawrence Kuhn to put Western Province in a winning position.

The final match of the tie proved to be a really tough tussle which Australian Cmeron Pilley ranked 19 in the world just managed to edge through at 13-11 in the fifth game against Egyptian Omar Meguid ranked 10 places lower.

SACD A notched an easy 19-4 win over Border with Tristan Eysele defeating his SACD number 2 counterpart J P Brits in 5 games.

In the Women’s Kaplan Cup Western Province the number 1 seeds wasted little time in disposing of Kwazulu Natal for the loss of only 1 point.

Central Gauteng, the defending champions outplayed Eastern Province 17-4 while Northerns upset the SACD side 16-8.

06-Jul, Day ONE:
Western Province tested
on opening day in Potchefstroom

Defending champions Western Province, spearheaded by Australian world #19 Cameron Pilley and world #42 Shaun le Roux, had to pull out all the stops in their encounter with fourth seeds SACD A the first round of the Laser Jarvis Kaplan Interprovincial squash championships at the Defence Courts in Potchefstroom.

For the coastal side, Clinton Leeuw notched a straight game victory over Christo Potgieter. In the gruelling encounter which followed Rodney Durbach (WP) scraped through 3-11 12-10 9-11 14-12 12-10 against nuggety Jimmy Schlebusch in what was the saving of last year’s winners.

New SACD cap, Rudi van Niekerk, outplayed experienced Zulo Kubukeli in 4 games and it was left to le Roux to clinch the tie with a straight game win over JP Brits. In the clash between the number ones Egyptian Karim Gawad, ranked 14 in the world notched a further three points for SACD when he needed five tough games to subdue Pilley.

In the remaining A section fixtures second seeds Kwazulu Natal, with 2015 National champion Steve Coppinger at the helm had an interesting 17-8 win against newly promoted Free State. Kwazulu Natal’s number 3 and 4 Gary Wheadon and Andrew Martin were forced to five games by Paul Rodrigues and Reinhold Hergeth respectively.

Playing in his 25th Jarvis Cup, Kwazulu Natal captain Adrian Hansen suffered a straight game defeat at the hands of Jacques Swanepoel which saw Coppinger and Laurens Jan Anjema then take the reins with victories over Lawrence Kuhn and Egyptian Omar Meguid.

Central Gautemg, the third seeds dropped only one game in a runaway 20-1 victory against Border A.

In the Kaplan Cup – the women’s A section – defending champions Central Gauteng had an easy 20-3 win against Kwazulu Natal A as did Western Province who defeated SACD A 20-4.

Eastern Province scored a surprisingly easy win against Northerns which saw only National player Milnay Louw register the inland team’s sole 3 points when she beat Julia Le Coq of France in five games.

Play continues on Tuesday in all four men’s and two women’s sections with the finals on Friday 10th July.

200 head for Potchefstroom

Spearheaded by three of the world’s top 20 men’s squash players – Egypt’s Karim Abdel Gawad (14), South African Steve Coppinger (17) and Australian Cameron Pilley (19)- more than 200 of South Africa’s top squash players will be seen in action in Potchefstroom from Monday 6th until Friday 10th July when the annual Laser Jarvis Kaplan Cup Interprovincial Squash Championships will be played.

Emma Beddoes of England, ranked in the World’s top 15 women’s players, together with Denmark’s Line Hansen (24) and South African Siyoli Waters (34) will ensure that the women’s Kaplan Cup will also provide some top notch squash.

In the Men’s Jarvis Cup Western Province will be looking for a fourth consecutive win and a sixth victory since 2005.

With the same line-up as in 2014 - Pilley, Shaun le Roux, ranked 42 in the world, Clinton Leeuw, Rodney Durbach, and Zuko Kubukeli - Western Province could well engrave their names on the trophy again.

Seeded second Kwazulu Natal, which last won the title in 2011, sees Coppinger supported by Laurens Jan Anjema of the Netherlands ranked 33 in the world, Gary Wheadon, Andrew Martin and the experienced Adrian Hansen.

Slipping in at the number 3 slot, Central Gauteng is capable of surprising the top 2 seeds. ngland’s Eddie Charlton will have the Young Turks Thoboki Mohohlo, Michael Wood, Devon Hendrickse and Rudi Willemse in his corner.

However it is the fourth seeds, SACD, appearing for only the second time in the A section, which could provide all the upsets. Ranked 14 in the world Karim Abdel Gawad , JP Brits, Christo Potgieter, Jimmy Schlebusch and former Eastern Province player Rudi van Niekerk, if on form, could all upset the higher seeded teams.

Two teams Western Province and Central Gauteng have dominated the women’s A section for the past decade. Western Province captured the title for three consecutive years from 2005 but since then the title has swopped provinces annually with Central Gauteng victorious in 2014.

On paper Western Province’s lineup of Hansen, Waters, 2015 National champion Alexandra Fuller, Sacha West and Karen Schultz should edge through. But Beddoes, Cheyna Tucker , twins Elani and Lume Landman and Adel Weir could rise to the occasion and defend their title.

The Men’s division sees four sections with two in the women’s. The Men’s A and D , the Women’s A and B play a round robin while the Men’s B and C sections sees the eight teams divided into two pools with crossover play-offs followed by positional play-offs.

Three venues: Defence, Potchefstroom Country Club and Potchefstroom University courts will be used . The Men’s A, Men’s B and Women’s A sections will be played at the Defence courts while the Men’s C , D and Women’s B sections will be seen in action at the Country Club and University courts.
