Remuera retain Mitchell Cup as Palmerston end long wait ...
Gary Denvir reports
The bragging rights have been decided for the next 12 months
following the annual battle for national squash club
supremacy in Hamilton at the weekend.
Remuera can claim to have the strongest women's team in the
country after taking out the Mitchell Cup while Palmerston
North has similar claims in the men's ranks after winning
the Cousins Shield.
Remuera's victory in the women's competition was reasonably
clear cut, beating Hamilton 3-1 in the final. However, the
host clubs chances were not helped by the absence of former
world number one Leilani Rorani, who was unavailable to play
on Sunday due to her religious beliefs.
Rebecca Borman gave Remuera the early advantage with a
straight games victory over Nadine Cull before former New
Zealand rep Lara Heta made it 2-0 to the Auckland club with
a 3-0 win against Wanita Jackson. That left newly crowned
Australian Open champion Joelle King needing to beat world
number 16 Jaclyn Hawkes 3-0 to keep Hamilton in the tie. The
world number 53 gave herself every chance, storming to a 2-0
lead, but couldn't close the gate and while King eventually
won 3-2, it was not enough to prevent Remuera taking the
title. Jackie Laurenson then capped off celebrations for the
Auckland side, winning the dead rubber 3-0 against Kay
Newman.

Meanwhile, the men's competition was a much tighter affair,
with Palmerston North edging Remuera 3-2 in the title
decider.
Once again Remuera was first on the board, with George
Crosby beating Mike McSherry 3-0. But the Palmerston North
team was not about to lie down and hand the Auckland club
both titles. 18-year-old Joseph Watts levelled the tie with
a 3-0 win over Scott Harrison before Josh Greenfield put
them 2-1 ahead with a 3-2 victory over Graeme Wilson,
fighting back from 8-3 down in the fifth.
That left Glenn Carson to wrap up the tie for the Central
club, but inevitably there was to be another twist, with
Carson beaten in a five game thriller by Izaac Williams.
Palmerston North would not be denied their first Cousins
Shield in 50 years though - Ant McLeod finally confirming
the victory with a 3-1 win over Mark Dunwoodie in the
decider.

Remuera on
course for double
Gary Denvir reports
Remuera is on target to do the double at the annual battle
for national squash club supremacy in Hamilton.
The Auckland club is through to the final of both the men's
Cousins Shield competition, and the women's Mitchell Cup.
The men proved to have too much depth for North Shore in the
semifinals, winning 4-1 with the only defeat coming at
number one, where Graeme Wilson went down in straight games
to world number 58 Martin Knight. Their opponents in the
final are Palmerston North, who also won 4-1 against Bay of
Plenty's Waikite Valley.
In the Mitchell Cup, Remuera edged to a 3-1 win over
Palmerston North in the semifinals, led by world number 16
Jaclyn Hawkes, who was a comfortable 3-0 winner against
Paula Darlington.
They'll meet Hamilton in the final, after the Waikato club
downed North Shore 3-1, with newly crowned Australian Open
champion Joelle King and former world number one Leilani
Rorani both winning in straight games.

Strong
showing for clubs' battle
Gary Denvir reports
An impressive turn out for the annual battle for national
squash club supremacy in Hamilton this weekend.
The Cousins Shield and Mitchell Cup have both
attracted far stronger fields than in 2008, with many of the
country's top professionals set to play for their clubs.
That has seen the number of teams competing for the women's
Mitchell Cup climb to eight this year, up from four in 2008,
while the men's Cousins Shield is up from 11 to 12.
Herne Bay is the defending champion in the Cousins
Shield, and is again a strong title contender with world
number 59 Campbell Grayson at number one and Chris Lloyd
playing at two.
However, Remuera A also has strong claims as a
favourite with Graeme Wilson and George Crosby in the side.
Last year's beaten finalists also have another incentive,
with Scott Harrison playing in the Cousins Shield for the
25th time in his career.
The other team to watch could well be North Shore,
who have world number 58 Martin Knight at number one and
world masters champion Gary Duberly at two.
The women's Mitchell Cup is no less intriguing.
Once again Remuera A must be considered one of the
title favourites, with world number 16 Jaclyn Hawkes at
number one. Hawkes is joined in the team by her sisters
Sally and Rebecca, as well as former New Zealand
representative Lara Heta who will play at number two.
Host club Hamilton could give them a run for their
money though, with newly crowned Australian Open champion
Joelle King at one and former world number one Leilani
Rorani at two. Rorani is back on court after rediscovering
her passion for the game while mentoring King in her
fledgling professional career.
